조선시대 문헌 속의 좡족(壯族) 영웅 눙즈가오(儂智高)에 대한 기록 고찰 = A Study on the Records of Nong Zhigao, the Zhuang People’s Hero, as Shown in the Texts of the Joseon Period

국문 초록 (Abstract)

눙즈가오는 중국의 소수민족 좡족의 선조이자 위대한 영웅이다. 송대 인종(仁宗) 시기에 중국과 베트남의 경계지역에서 대남국(大南國)을 건립하고 칭제하였다가, 송의 명장(名將) 적청(狄靑)에게 패하여 대리국(大理國)으로 피신한 이후에 생을 마감한 인물이다.
그의 생애와 송과의 전쟁에 대한 기록은 중국 문헌에 가장 많이 남아 있으며 좡족의 자료로는 구전으로 전해지는 설화들을 참고할 수 있다. 눙즈가오에 대한 양측의 평가는 매우 상반된다. 중국의 문헌에 묘사된 눙즈가오는 반란을 일으킨 도적이자 잔인무도한 인간으로서 인식되고 있음에 반하여, 좡족 설화에서 그는 영웅이자 신(神)적인 존재이다.
눙즈가오는 조선시기 문헌에도 출현하는데, 임진왜란 이후부터 영, 정조 시기의 문헌에 많이 등장하였다. 조선시기 문헌에서 눙즈가오는 주로 외적(왜구)이나 임꺽정과 같은 도적의 무리를 비유하는데 언급되었고, 급기야 19세기 말에는 동학농민군의 수령을 부정적으로 지칭하는데 사용되기도 했다. 이를 통해 조선시기 문헌에 기재되고 있는 눙즈가오의 이미지는 송대 문인에 의해 타자화(他者化) 된 이미지가 그대로 전승된 것이며, 조선조의 지식인들이 성리학적 역사관에 입각해 중국과 동일한 관점에서 눙즈가오를 비롯한 이민족을 바라보았다는 것을 알 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Nong Zhigao is the forefather and great hero for the Zhuang people, a minority ethnic group in China. He founded Danan Guo at the border between China ad Vietnam during the reign of Emperor Renzong (仁宗) of Song. When quelled by Di Qing (狄靑), a great general of Song, he fled but was eventually killed.
His life and wars with Song are described the most in the Chinese records, and as documents affiliated with the Zhuang people, the orally transmitted tales may be helpful, as well. The two sides offer quite opposite views on Nong Zhigao. The Chinese records view Nong Zhigao as a bandit who raised a rebellion and brutal man, whereas the Zhuang people’s ethnic tales depict him as a hero and demigod.
Nong Zhigao also appears in the texts of the Joseon period, frequently showing in the records during the reign of King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo. The texts of the Joseon period mention Nong Zhigao mainly to compare the Japanese pirates or bandits like Im Kkeokjeong to him, and eventually his name was used to negatively refer to the chief of the Donghak peasant army in the late 19th century. Thus, we can see that the image of Nong Zhigao described in the texts of the Joseon period was what was transmitted as otherized by the men of letter of the Song dynasty, and that the intellectuals of the Joseon period viewed the foreign people including Nong Zhigao from the same perspective as China did, by taking the New-Confucian view of history.
