      Advanced membranes have been actively developed for separation and energy generation for the last decades. In this presentation, we report on two examples of this class; 1) new cactus-inspired self-humidifying membranes for energy generation and 2) microporous polymer membranes for separations in water and organic liquids. The regulation of water content in polymeric membranes is important in a number of applications, such as in reverse electrodialysis and in proton-exchange fuel-cell membranes. Here we report an alternative solution that does not rely on external regulation of water supply or high temperatures. Microporous polymers are a class of polymeric materials with high free volumes and large surface areas. Among the recently reported interesting rigid microporous polymers, polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM), thermally rearranged (TR) polymer membranes and Troger’s base (TB) polymers have been developed recently. In this presentation, we review the recent advances of these polymers and in particular, we will report on TR polymer membranes suitable for water treatment applications, organic solvent nano-filtration and energy harvesting application.
