유학의 仁사상의 사회생물학적 해석 = An Interpretation of the Idea of Ren in Confucianism from the Sociobiological Perspective

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현대는 생물학과 생명과학의 시대이다. 인간유전자 지도가 밝혀졌고 장기이식과 인간복제가 가능해졌다. 생물학의 이론을 사회학적으로 접목한 사회생물학의 약진에도 주목해야 한다. 이는 과학의 시대, 생명과학의 시대에 생명과학과 인문학의 통섭의 시도이며 유학사상의 시대적 재조명의 필요성과도 연결되어 있는 문제이다. 따라서 본 논문은 생명과학 시대의 유가사상의 새로운 이해를 위하여 유학의 仁사상을 사회생물학적으로 해석하였다. 공자의 仁은 孝로부터 시작하여 전 인류의 삶을 풍요롭게 하고자 하는 대동세계로 전진한다. 다시 말하면 仁은 혈연주의의 맹목적 이타성에서 시작하지만 곧바로 순수한 이타성으로 고양된다. 이 중간지점에 있는 것이 四端說을 중심으로 한 맹자의 仁사상이다. 인간의 유전자 속에는 四德이 각인되어 있고 이것은 호혜성 이타주의를 넘어서 순수한 이타주의로 향하는 지향성이고 가능성이다. 사회생물학은 맹목적 이타성과 호혜적 이타성 간의 갈등과 괴리를 해결하는 방안으로 순수한 이타성을 도입하는데, 유학의 仁은 맹목적 이타성 속에 호혜적 이타성이 포함되어 있다. 나의 가족에 대한 사랑의 자연스러운 확장은 인간성의 본연의 발로이며 동시에 순수한 인간감정의 표출이기 때문이다. 따라서 유학의 仁사상의 이타성은 호혜성과 순수성 사이의 논란이 없다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

We are living in the age of biology and life science in contemporary times when we have succeeded not only in the discovery of the map of human genome but also in organ transplant and human cloning. Now is the time for us to pay attention to the rapid development of sociobiology, which is an attempt toward realizing consilience between life science and humanities studies in the age of science and life science and which is also connected to the necessity of re-illuminating Confucianism in contemporary times. Accordingly, this paper is aimed at reinterpreting the philosophy of ren (仁) in Confucianism from the sociobiological perspective in order to reexamine the Confucian thought in the age of life science. The Confucian philosophy of ren starts from the idea of filial piety and advances toward realizing the society of grand harmony (大同) where all people live in peace. In other words, ren begins from unconditional altruism (hardcore altruism) based on blood ties but directly moves toward pure altruism. The philosophy of ren centering around the theory of Four Beginnings (四端) advocated by Mencius is at the center of the two opposite modes. The Four Virtues (四德) of human beings, which are engraved in human genes, are the directivity and the possibility that move from reciprocal altruism to pure altruism. Sociobiology adopts the concept of pure altruism as a way of resolving the conflict and the gap between hardcore altruism (unconditional altruism) and softcore altruism (reciprocal altruism), whereas reciprocal altruism is included in hardcore altruism in the idea of ren. The natural expansion of self-love into the love of one's own family is the manifestation of humanity and the expression of pure human emotions.
Therefore, altruism in the idea of ren does not presupposes a debate between reciprocal altruism and pure altruism.
