Dongmoo(東武) Lee Je-Ma(李濟馬, 1837-1900) was a Confucian scholar and physician who founded Sasang Constitutional medicine(SCM, 四象體質醫學) as a new medical theory based on the Sasang(四象) Philosophy.
SCM is a unique form of Constitutional Medicine developed by applying and adapting the theory of the four quadrants Phases(四象說) to the Kosmos, humanity, and the human body.
As it is also called ‘Ethical Medicine’ or ‘Nature and Emotion Medicine(性情 의학)’, it derives from a new perspective where the Confucian theory of nature and emotion(性情論), along with ethical and moral principles, are directly linked to medical healing.
The fundamental pathogenesis and pathology of SCM holds that all diseases originate from the boiling of the heart fire(心火), thus stating, “If one does not excessively burn the heart fire, there is no reason one cannot live long(不過用心火 則無不得壽).” Therefore, SCM emphasizes the moral aspect of mind-body healing –regulating one’s Nature and Emotion and governing the mind(責心, 責氣)- more than purely medical treatment.
However, it does not stop at mere guidance like ‘cultivate your mind and live a moral life.’ 『DongEui SooSe BoWon(東醫壽世保元, Longevity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine)』 explains that due to innate differences in the one’s Nature and Emotion of individuals, the inherent size(function) of their internal organs vary. It specifically discusses the nature, talents(才幹), Constant heart(恒心), and strengths and weaknesses of each individual.
Furthermore, it systematically connects these to physiology and pathology, developing discussions across diverse categories: cultivation of character for healing (Preserving the mind and nourishing the nature(存心養性), Cultivating oneself and establishing one‘s destiny(修身立命), the The knowledge and action of each individual(Understand others and cultivate oneself(知人正己), broad learning(博通) and independent action(獨行), and cultivation according to social life(age, region, alcohol・carnal pleasures・wealth・authority(酒・色・財・權)).
Therefore, this paper aims to promote a systematic understanding of the healing mechanism -specifically, the healing process- from the perspective of the Sasang(四象) philosophy rather than SCM.
It divides this process into the individual dimension [Heaven-Human Knowledge-Action天人知行] and the social dimension [Knowing Others and Cultivating Oneself知人正己].
Therefore, this paper aims to promote a systematic understanding of the healing mechanism -specifically, the healing process- from the perspective of the Sasang(四象) philosophy rather than SCM.
