This study conducted an in-depth analysis of the rise of Generation Z as political actors and agents of social change, focusing on the large-scale protests against tax increases that occurred in Kenya in 2024.
It delves into the values and motivations driving Kenyan Gen Z's participation in these protests, examining the impact of their actions on Kenyan society and the church. Additionally, the study explores potential missionary strategies for the Kenyan church to effectively communicate with Gen Z and collaborate with them to address societal issues within a changing social environment.
Findings revealed that Kenyan Gen Z actively engaged in political participation through social media networking, demonstrating a critical awareness of societal issues and a strong desire for change based on values distinct from previous generations. Notably, they led protests demanding solutions not only for excessive tax increases but also for corruption, environmental issues, and social inequality. This differs from the previous youth-led protests known as Maandamano, characterized by a more organized approach and a broader range of social issues.
This study suggests that the participation of Kenyan Gen Z in these protests signifies the emergence of a new force driving social change, beyond mere political opposition. This presents both challenges and opportunities for the Kenyan church. Kenyan churches must understand the values of Gen Z, strengthen communication with them, and collaborate to address societal issues. Furthermore, the need for innovative missionary approaches tailored to the characteristics of Gen Z is highlighted.
