(Background and Purpose) Individuals frequently and actively seek“non-factual horror”experiences within established safety frameworks to attain unique psychological satisfaction. The fundamental value of such experiences resides in their capacity to be transformed into“interesting experiences,”which are characterized by a dominance of positive affectivity punctuated by moderate levels of negative emotions. Nevertheless, contemporary spatial design typically gravitates toward a singular, positive emotional orientation, offering limited exploration into the strategic transformation of negative emotions to facilitate deep and memorable experiences. Conversely, horror cinema, through over a century of development, has cultivated sophisticated mechanisms for horror construction and emotional regulation. This study aims to integrate psychological principles with spatial theories to develop a comprehensive cross-media transformation framework, exploring how cinematic emotional regulation mechanisms can be effectively translated into design strategies for recreational horror spaces to balance intensity with safety. (Method) This research adopts an interdisciplinary approach, integrating theories from emotional psychology, neuroscience, and spatial design. Initially, literature analysis defines the dimensions of fictionality, mediation, and safety characterizing non-factual horror. Subsequently, case analysis examines how horror films construct“safe fear.”Finally, a transformation framework spanning from psychological mechanisms through cinematic techniques to spatial strategies is established. (Results) The research identifies three core mechanisms essential for the positive transformation of non-factual horror. The Narrative Control Mechanism utilizes suspense, information contrast, and rhythmic pacing to shift fear from a visceral emotional reaction to intellectual cognitive engagement. The Perceptual Manipulation Mechanism employs audiovisual design and embodied immersion to trigger authentic fear responses while simultaneously fostering deep immersion. The Psychological Distance Regulation Mechanism uses fictional framing, safety assurances, and defensive guidance to ensure fear remains within a transformable and positive spectrum. Building upon these mechanisms, the study articulates specific spatial design strategies: translating cinematic narrative control into sequential spatial layouts, converting perceptual manipulation into multi-sensory environment construction, and adapting psychological distance regulation into the establishment of safety boundaries. These strategies collectively facilitate the creation of immersive, participatory, and profoundly interesting spatial experiences. (Conclusions) The appeal of non-factual horror experiences resides in their compound emotional architecture within safety boundaries. Although spatial design lacks cinema's explicit fictional framework, it possesses distinctive advantages including multi-sensory stimulation, physical participation, and controllable pacing. Through creative translation of horror cinema's three core mechanisms into spatial design strategies, this study provides theoretical reference for horror-themed spaces such as escape rooms and haunted houses, enabling the creation of interesting experiences that are both emotionally impactful and safely controllable.
