사회부과적 완벽주의와 자기구실 만들기: 수치심 및 부정적 인지대처의 매개효과 = Socially Prescribed Perfectionism and Self-Handicapping: Shame and Negative Cognitive Coping as Mediators

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사회부과적 완벽주의와 같은 부적응적 완벽주의 경향이 높은 이들은 자신에 대한 타인의 평가를 과도하게 염려하는 불안한 자아상을 보인다. 이렇게 완벽을 추구하는 과정에서 불안정하고 “완벽하지 못한 자아”가 타인에게 드러나는 것을 막기 위해 부적응적 완벽주의자들은 자기구실 만들기 행동을 보이는 경향이 있다. 본 연구는 부적응적 완벽주의와 자기구실 만들기의 관계에서 정서 그리고 인지적 매개기제를 밝히고자 실시하였다. 구체적으로, 부적응적 완벽주의 성향을 가진 개인은 타인이나 사회적으로 부과된 비현실적 목표 앞에 정서적으로 보다 높은 수준의 수치심을 경험하기 쉬운데 이런 불편한 정서를 자기비난, 반추 등의 부정적 인지방식으로 대처하게 되고, 이러한 상황에서 자신의 자존감을 지키고자 자기구실 만들기의 부적응적 행동을 더 보일 것으로 예상했다. 이를 검증하기 위해 서울 소재 대학교에 재학 중인 대학생 331명을 대상으로 설문을 실시하여 완벽주의와 자기구실 만들기의 관계에서 수치심과 부정적 인지대처의 이중 매개모형을 검증한 결과, 부적응적 완벽주의와 자기구실 만들기의 관계에서 수치심과 부정적 인지대처가 순차적으로 완전 매개 하는 것을 발견했다. 즉, 부적응적 완벽주의 성향이 클수록 수치심을 더 경험하게 되고, 이는 부정적인 인지 대처 방식으로 이어졌으며, 결국 부적응적인 자기구실 만들기 행동으로 나타날 수 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구 결과의 임상 및 학술적 의의를 논의에 포함했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Those who have high level of maladaptive perfectionism such as socially prescribed perfectionism, tend to have unstable self-image that is overly concerned about other’s evaluation of them. In the process of seeking perfection, maladaptive perfectionists are likely to resort to self-handicapping strategies in order to prevent revelation of the instable “imperfect self“ to others. This study aimed to examine affective and cognitive mediators of the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and self-handicapping strategies among 331 undergraduate students. We hypothesized that individuals who sought unrealistically high standards and goals that were given by significant others and society (i.e., socially prescribed perfectionism) would be more likely to experience shame when they failed to meet those standards, cope with their negative emotions with maladaptive cognitive coping such as catastrophizing and rumination. Finally these individuals would be more likely to show self-handicapping strategies in order to protect their damaged self-image. Findings supported our hypothesis. Shame and negative coping styles fully mediated the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and self-handicapping. Implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
