The purpose of art education is to improve the aesthetic sensitivity of students in visually expressing their thoughts and to develop self-directed learning ability, in addition to visual communication ability. In addition, art education is an integrated activity that creatively advances inner thoughts and experiences of students through formative activities, and is a field of education that induces free expression of individual students. In the course of art practice, students learn and apply a wide array of aesthetic knowledge to derive new ideas. As such, fostering application ability to switch thinking of students freely is the core goal of art education.
The researcher reviewed points of enhancement from the unit on character expression of six current art textbooks by the publisher in the art education of the first grade of middle school. It could be identified that the six textbooks presented learning goals and practical instruction methods in a uniform way, and their illustrative artworks were limited to the results of established artworks. Accordingly, the researcher devised a new art assignment by focusing on the possibility that presenting a concrete practice teaching plan in art class and deriving diverse visual results can influence the creativity enhancement and learning effect of students.
The assignment of multi-view person image editing is an assignment of observing the face of a friend from various viewpoints then reconstructing the perceived image using free shapes. Students compare and analyze the image of their friends by using free shapes in the process of simplifying the face to make determinations. Moreover, students utilize diverse materials, additionally in the course of editing and combining the shapes. This assignment allows students to draw unexpected results beyond realistic reproduction by editing free shapes they did not intend. On the other hand, the effect of further enhancing creativity can be expected via free-thinking that is beyond the fixed model answer.
As existing studies on understanding a variety of effects of the multi-view approach, the multi-view characteristics found in the Cubism style by Pablo Picasso, various interpretations of the point of view in the Photo-Collage by David Hockney, and the photography-sculpture by Kwon Oh-Sang were examined. All three artists can be considered as examples of uniquely presenting original elements of objects through various visual approaches to objects. Photo-collage, which works by connecting a photography technique with a sculpture, is presented along with the example artwork. The characteristics of the artworks of these artists, which express the essential elements of objects via diversified observations from various viewpoints, become the background of utilizing the free shape editing assignment presented by the researcher.
In order to examine the fact that the multi-view person image editing assignment can help students improve their creativity, this study also discussed the research on creativity in the field of cognitive psychology and brain science. By summarizing the concepts of divergent-thinking and convergent-thinking, the process through which the harmony of the two types of thinking influences creativity was identified. The multi-view person image editing assignment presented by the researcher enabled students to conduct diverse visual analysis by using unintended free shapes and derive a variety of results. In the process of performing the assignment, participants continue an appropriate harmony between divergent-thinking and convergent-thinking, which can derive diverse results.
This assignment is expected to create an opportunity to transform creative visual ideas that are different from the convention of the viewpoints that have been considered ideologically. This assignment can be an art education method that encourages the expansion of new thinking about oneself and surroundings, in addition to providing diverse pleasures of expression through expressing the appearance and personality of friends, for middle school students who are unfamiliar with the realistic expression.
After the production of the artwork, students can listen to others’ opinions while discussing the results with friends and can internalize the expression methods and intentions of various results different from theirs. Presentation and discussion can enhance critical thinking skills and identify diverse thoughts of oneself and others. The multi-view person image editing assignment using free shapes is expected to stimulate active participation and curiosity of students while enhancing their creativity based on the background discussed.
