      This study aimed to analyze the city image of “Gyeongju” and present future directions and tasks. Gyeongju is the ancient city of Silla of a thousand years, which is a city of culture and tourism recognized by everyone. However, upon entering the 2000s, its image as a city of culture and tourism decreased and a different image came to the fore. This study analyzed the images of Gyeongju until now as a way to restore its image as the representative city of culture and tourism in South Korea and present future directions and tasks. Previous studies on the image of Gyeongju mainly proposed the directions in which Gyeongju should proceed as a city of culture and tourism based on the results of a survey. Many studies have been actively conducted, but in most of them, only the opinions of the people residing in Korea or Gyeongju have been reflected, which is a limitation. Thus, to overcome this limitation, this study analysed newspaper materials that reflect the opinions of foreign students and college students nationwide in the age of internationalization. Through this, the latest image of Gyeongju in younger generations was analyzed objectively. The discussions in this paper are as follows: Chapter 2 presents an analysis of the city image of Gyeongju through a newspaper article keyword analysis. The analysis found that the city image of Gyeongju had been recognized as a “city of culture and tourism” from the 1950s through the 1990s. However, it turned out that upon entering the 2000s, it has gained the image of a “nuclear energy city” in addition to the image of a city of culture and tourism. Chapter 3 shows a comparative analysis of the opinions of Korean students and foreign students on the image of Gyeongju based on a questionnaire. The study found that the students commonly think that Gyeongju is an ancient city with a history of a thousand years and a place that represents Silla. In addition, the image as a city of culture and tourism was high as a “good place for a trip” and a “place with a lot of cultural diversity”. The ancient city Gyeongju mostly had the image of a “city of history”. However, it had the image of a "“nuclear energy city” at the level of recognition above the average, which is an aspect of change in the recognition of the city image of Gyeongju. This is consistent with the results of the analysis in Chapter 2. There was no big difference in the recognition of the city image of Gyeongju between domestic students and foreign students. Based on the results of the analysis detailed in Chapters 2 and 3, Chapter 4 proposes directions and tasks to promote the image of Gyeongju. The results of the diachronic newspaper keyword analysis and analysis of the survey on the city image of Gyeongju with domestic students and foreign students will contribute to promoting the city image of Gyeongju.
