일제강점기 한글운동과 문맹퇴치(문자보급) 운동 연구 = The Study of Hangeul Movement and the eradication movement of illiteracy during the Colonial Periods

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 일제강점기 한글운동과 문맹퇴치(문자보급)운동의 성격과 전개 과정 등을 규명함으로써, 한글운동의 본질과 식민시대 문자보급운동이 갖는 의의를 규명하는 데 목표를 두었다. `한글`이라는 용어는 1910년 전후 주시경에 의해 만들어진 용어이다. `한글운동`이라는 용어가 공식적으로 쓰인 것은 1920년대 중반 이후로 확인되는데, 이 용어가 일반적으로 쓰이기까지는 `조선문`, `언문`과 관련한 연구 및 보급 활동이 지속되었다. 이러한 연구 및 보급 활동은 시대별로 차이를 보이는데, 국권 상실기인 1910년대에는 우리글이 `국문`의 지위에서 `조선문`으로 격하되었으며, 정규 교육 차원에서 조선어 교과의 위상도 매우 낮았다.
1920년대 전반기에는 조선문 연구와 정리, 보급 활동이 출현하는데, 이 운동은 문화운동 차원에서 진행된 운동이다. 1925년 이후에는 조선농민사의 설립, 동아일보사의 한글운동, 조선어연구회의 동인지 『한글』 창간 등을 기점으로 본격적인 한글운동이 시작되었으며, 그 가운데 하나로 `문맹퇴치(문자보급)운동`이 본격화되기 시작했다. 이 시기 주목할 것은 `한글`이라는 용어가 사회 일반에 통용되기 시작했다는 점이며, `한글운동`이라는 용어도 널리 쓰이기 시작했다는 점이다. 일제강점기 한글보급운동은 식민 통치기 정규교육을 보완하는 차원으로 진행된 점, 그나마 총독부의 간섭과 방해가 심했다는 점 등에서 민중계몽에 필요한 지식을 전달하고 비판의식을 함양하는 데에는 본질적인 한계를 갖고 있는 운동이었다고 규정할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to survey the tendency of the Hangeul Movement and the movement for the eradication of illiteracy during the Japanese colonial Periods. The Hangeul movement is different from the eradication of illiteracy movement. The former meant the movement of arrangement or unification of Hangeul(the Korean alphabet), the latter meant the movement campaign to abolish illiteracy. Strictly speaking, the latter contained the former.
These movements appeared during the whole period of colonial times. The term of `Hangeul` used by JU SIGYEONG(주시경) in 1910`s. This term was commonly used in the middle 1920`s. The Korean alphabet were downgrade from national letter to JOSEON`s letter(조선문) during colonial times. The Hangeul movements aim was the unification of spelling, unity of speech and writing and abolish on of illiteracy. The Hangeul diffusion movement has become active by the Farmer Organization and the Press Company in the 1926. This movement were led by the JOSEON NONGMINSA(the publisher for Korean farmers), the DONGAILBOSA and the JOSEONILBOSA(newspaper publishing company). Though this movement achieved some measure of effectiveness, the colonial government suppressed this movement continually.
