This study is aimed at making the estimation model of Relative Quantity of the Pedestrians^1 and it’s application in the design process of underground mall.
The syntactic aspects, the physical aspects, and environmental cognition related factors are considered in producing the estimation model. And, the interrelations among the spaces are considered more crucial factors in determining the relative quantity of pedestrians than other possible factors. Regarded 8 factors are Integration, Integration3, Connectivity, Control, PointDepth, Width, Height, and Environmental Cognition Related Factors. Among them, Height and Environmental Cognition Factors are excluded in the actual survey. For the case of Height, there are not many differences according to the pathways. And, Environmental Cognition Related Factors are removed because they are on the way of pedestrians inducing facilities like multiplex movie theater and aquarium.
The models are proposed in the preliminary survey, it shows there could be possible relations between the numbers of pedestrians and the factors, Integration, Integration3, and Width.
To verify these models, the survey for the total pathways was gone through. By this the model suggested, this model also can be defined in the combinations of Integration, and Width. RQOP(Relative Quantity of Pedestrians) = A + B^*Integration + C^* Width.
This model is achieved with the Linear Regression Analysis by analyzing 42 cases. And, R-Square of this model is 0.528. Also, having Significant 0.00. Even though it is needed to have further survey confirm exact coefficients, the result can be applied in design process.
In the design criteria, the result can be applied as following.
Aspects of Space Structure
1) Circulation
To increase overall Integration value, the circulation among the spaces should be increased. If the overall integration value is increased, it becomes easy to provide various Integrations.
2) MeanDepth
The distance to the other convex spaces is MeanDepth. This distance is not the physical one. It means just the number of turning. If MeanDepth decreases, the Integration in the space will be increased.
3) Width
To make more populated places, the paths should be wider than those having same Integration value. But, it seems to be impossible to control pedestrian population by only width. From the survey result, the Width seems to put influence to pedestrian population with Integration.
Aspects of Facility Location
1) The Location of Pedestrian Enforcing Facilities
The roads leading to Pedestrian Enforcing Facilities tend to be populated with people. So, the facilities should be considered in pedestrian control.
2) The Location of Main Entrance
The location of main entrance is crucial in pedestrian number control because it tend to be populated without any relationship with space structure.
3) The Location of the Service Facilities and Main Commercial Areas
The service facilities should be located in the area having low Integration value. On the other hand, Commercial areas should be located in the highly integrated areas.
