미국 공교육의 전개와 기독교의 역할 = The Development of Public Education and the Role of Christianity in the U.S.A.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to reveal how Christianity has effect onthe development of American public education. The important elementfor exploring the relationship between American school education andChristianity is the change of the students’ cultural characteristics andthe social situation around schools. In other words, how the role ofChristianity in school education changes according to the change ofstudents’ cultural, ethnic, and religious characteristics is the researchquestion in this paper. I have divided into four sessions of Americanschool history and investigated how Christianity affects school educationat each session. The contributions that Christianity makes for thedevelopment of American public education are examined and at the sametime the limitations of Christianity’s effect on education are studied.
The main contents of early American school education were faith andmoral education based on the Bible. Christian faith made great contributionsto the development of American society on the basis on Christianvalues, through providing foundation for the purpose and content ofAmerican schools. At that time the schools which are influenced byChristianity tended to make people conform to the existing order, ratherthan raising questions on the layered social system. Especially theschools did not try to improve the social discrimination of Native Americansand black slaves, but resulted in adherence to the discrimination.
Today, the American schools are unduly influenced by economy andbusiness companies. The purpose of the schooling seems to fostercompetitiveness in the global market. This trend may weaken the moraland spiritual aspects of education, and trap human life into materialismand capitalism as well as grow the possibility of the destruction ofenvironment. It is a serious problem from a Christian point of view.
However, Christianity today is used to respond passively to the neo-liberaleducation focused on competitiveness and economy. So, active effortsare needed to find a Christian alternative beyond today neo-liberaltrends in education.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문의 목적은 미국공교육의 전개과정에서 기독교가 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는지를 밝히는데 있다. 미국 학교교육과 기독교의 관계를 탐구하면서 중요하게 고려해야 할 요소는학교를 구성하는 학생들의 문화적 특징과 학교를 둘러싼 사회적 상황의 변화이다. 즉, 학생들이 지닌 문화적, 인종적, 종교적 특징의 변화에 따라 학교교육에서 기독교의 역할이어떻게 변화되어 왔는지가 본고에서 탐구할 연구 질문이다. 미국의 학교 역사를 네시기로나누어 고찰하였고, 각 시기마다 학교역사의 전개에서 기독교가 학교교육에 어떤 영향을끼쳤는지를 살펴보았다. 기독교가 미국 공교육의 발전에 끼친 공헌 점을 밝히는 동시에한계점에 대해서도 살펴보았다.
초창기 미국의 학교들은 공립이든 사립이든 관계없이 교육의 주요내용이 성경을 토대로 한 신앙과 도덕 교육이었다. 기독교 신앙은 미국학교 교육의 목적과 내용에 기초를 제공하여 미국사회가 기독교적 가치를 기반으로 발전하는데 큰 기여를 하였다. 동시에 기독교적 영향을 강하게 받고 있던 학교들은 사람들로 하여금 계층화되어 있던 당시 사회체제에 대해 문제제기를 하기 보다는 기존 질서에 순응하게 만드는데 기여하였다. 특히 미국원주민과 흑인 노예에 대한 사회적 차별을 개선하려는 노력보다는 고착시키는데 기여한측면이 있음을 밝혔다.
오늘날 미국의 학교는 기업과 경제의 영향을 과도하게 받고 있다. 학교교육의 목적이세계시장에서의 경쟁력을 키우는 것으로 이해되는 경향이 강하다. 이러한 경향은 교육의도덕적, 영적 측면을 약화시키고 인간 삶을 물질주의와 경제지상주의에 포획되게 할뿐 아니라 환경에 대한 파괴의 가능성까지 키우게 한다. 이는 기독교적 관점에서 문제점으로지적될 수 있다. 그러나 오늘날 기독교는 경제와 경쟁 중심의 신자유주의 교육에 대한 적극적인 대응이 미진한 것이 사실이다. 과거 미국원주민에 대한 동화교육이 주류일 때도원주민들의 문화를 존중했던 소수 기독교인들의 정신과 인종차별이 보편화 되어있던 시절에도 이를 극복하고자 했던 기독교적 전통을 되살릴 필요가 있다. 마지막으로 미국의 교육사에 대한 연구로부터 얻을 수 있는 우리나라 학교와 기독교의 관계에 대한 시사점을제시하였다.
