Nicolai Kapustin, Despite having educated in Moscow Conservatory to become a piano virtuoso-composer, he was also committed to fuse Classic with jazz after encountering jazz for the first time at the age of 16. After graduation, he toured around Russia for 11 years as the first jazz band composer-pianist in Russia, gaining musical experience that would later serve as a foundation for pursuit of his ambition. These musical assets from two completely different genres resulted in finely tuned Classical structures and composition techniques with melody of virtuoso jazz, which became one of a kind. Taking one step further, Kapustin experimented with various forms of music including sonata form mixing with forms of jazz and blues to traditional Prelude(1988). Although smaller in scale, researches show that Etudes(1984), published 4 years before, is another result of his experiments. This paper analyzes Three Etudes(1992), published 8 years after Etudes, to follow changes to Kapustin’s musical experiments after working with short piano music in simple forms.
