This study examines the effects of taking part in a life-long dance program on the mental health of the elderly. The dance program, originally developed for the purpose of this study, seeks to promote the mental health of the aged, taking into due consideration various characteristics of old age. The dance program is part of the effort to formulate policies for the welfare of senior citiTxns in preparation for the imminent silver society, in which rising numbers of senior citizens will make increasing demands on social programs. For the proposes of this study, a previously established 3-stage program and a 4-stage complex-program incorporating psychological skill training was applied to the life-long dance program. In order to determine the more effective program for the promotion of mental health, a pre-test was administered to the subjects, aged 65 or over, at various senior centers. The subjects were able to exert physical activities, but were not active in any other structured physical activity program at the time. The subjects were divided into the following three sub-groups according to the results of the pre-test : (1) 3-stage life-long dance program group (2) 4-stage life-long dance program group ; and, (3) non-participating control group. The life-long dance program was carried out 3 times a week for 8 weeks, after which period a post-test was administered. As the result of the findings of variations in mental health between the pre-test and the post-test, which took into consideration the changes in active and non-active partiapants and the type of prograrm, I have arrived at the following conclusions First, at the conclusion of the life-long dance program, 9 indicators of mental health generally declined among the participating group as compared to the non-participating group. The 9 indicators compose of somatic, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism Second, the above-mentioned 9 indicators of mental health showed more decline in the group taking part in the 4-stage complex-program incorporating psychological skill training than in that participating in the 3-stage life-long dance program
