국문 초록 (Abstract)

번역은 원천언어(ST)나 원천텍스트(ST)을 가능한 한 정확하게 목표언어(TL)나 목표텍스트(TT)로 바꾸는 것을 가장 기본적이며 보편적인 임무로 삼는다. 여기에서 간과하기 쉬운 것은 언어가 문화의 중요한 요소임을 무시한 채 문화적인 요소를 배제하기 쉽다는 사실이다. 많은 번역가들이 번역을 할 때 원본에 충실할 것인지, 아니면 목표언어의 유창성을 더 중요하게 여겨야 하는지 고민하다. 왜냐하면 그 두 가지 문제를 적당하게 균형 잡는 일은 몹시 어려운 일이기 때문이다. 또 다른 번역 방법론에는 문화적 요소를 함께 고려해서 번역하는 방법이 있다. 그러나 완벽한 번역은 불가능하다. 번역에 있어서 이러한 어려움 가운데 피치 못하게 상실되는 문화적 요소의 사례들을 본 소고에서는 임철우의 소설 『이별하는 골짜기』에서 고찰한다. 『이별하는 골짜기』의 영어 번역본 (Farewell Valley)은 2015년 가을 미국에서 발행예정이다. 이 영어번역본에서는 한국어를 영어로 번역하는 과정에서 한국어의 문화적 요소들이 일부 상실되어 있다. 예를 들어 다방, 아우라지 강, 산수유에서 특히 그러한 현상이 두드러진다. 이 논문에서는 그 상실된 문화적 감수성과 함축적 의미의 중요성을 살피고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

One of the dominant approaches to translation has been that of rendering as accurately as possible a source language (SL) or source text (ST) into a target language (TL) or target text (TT). However, this approach excludes cultural aspects, disregarding the notion that language is an important part of culture. Most translators must contemplate to what extent they should remain faithful to the original text or to what extent they should aim for fluency in the target language. Straddling between accuracy and fluency seems to be a universal problem when it comes to translation. Another approach to translation values language as an important part of culture; therefore, cultural aspects cannot be excluded when translating texts. Nevertheless, there is no perfect translation. In the process, however, it is inevitable that some things get lost. This paper highlights cultural implications that are inevitably lost in the English translation of the novel Farewell Valley by Im Ch`oru, closely examining examples such as “tabang” or tearoom, the Auraji River, and “sansuyu” or cornelian dogwoods.
