상왕조의 인간희생제의에 관한 연구: 전쟁, 도시, 위계를 중심으로 = A Study of the Human Sacrifice in Shang Dynasty : Focusing on War, City and Hierarchy

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 상왕조에서 거행된 인간희생제의의 목적과 의도를 파악하기 위하여마련되었다. 상왕조의 인간희생제의에 관한 연구는 1930년대부터 진행되었으며지금까지 상당한 성과가 축적되었다. 하지만 이 의례의 목적과 의의에 관한 연구는 여전히 불충분하다. 상왕조의 유지에서 발굴된 고고학적 자료와 갑골문은 당시 인간희생제의에 관하여 수많은 정보를 제공한다. 상왕조에서 인간은 동물과 함께 희생물로 사용되기도 하였고, 단독으로 동원되는 경우도 많았다. 갑골문에는인간희생제의에 매우 다양한 호칭의 인간들이 동원된 사례가 확인된다. 하지만 이들의 신분이 무엇인지에 관해서는 아직 완벽하게 밝혀진 상황은 아니다. 그럼에도불구하고 인간희생 가운데 전쟁 포로들이 상당한 비중을 차지하고 있었다는 점은분명하다. 갑골문은 인간이 신들의 세계와 소통하기 위하여 기울인 수많은 노력들을 기록하고 있다. 인간희생제의는 이러한 소통 방법 가운데 하나였다. 그러나 단순히 인간희생제의를 신과 인간 사이의 조화로운 질서를 구축하기 위한 방법으로만 이해한다면 여전히 풀리지 않는 문제들이 남는다. 예를 들어 이와 같은 입장은상왕조의 인간희생제의에 동원된 사람들 중에는 왜 전쟁 포로와 같이 특정 신분의사람들이 많이 동원되었는지, 또는 후기로 갈수록 인간희생의 빈도와 규모가 급격하게 줄어든 이유는 무엇이었는지에 대해서 만족할만한 해명을 제공하지 못한다.
본고는 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위하여 인간희생제의에 동원되는 사람들 가운데포로가 상당한 비중을 차지한다는 점에 초점을 맞추었다. 본고가 도달한 결론은다음과 같다. 상왕조는 전쟁에서 획득된 포로를 인간희생제의에 동원함으로써 중심과 주변, 내부와 외부 사이에 엄격한 위계질서를 구축하고자 의도하였다. 이러한 의례는 상왕조의 중심인 주요 도시들에서 거행되었다. 상왕조의 도시들은 의례복합 공간으로서 각종 의례가 기획되고 연출되는 공간이었다. 전쟁 포로들은 이러한 도시들의 의례 센터에서 공공연하게 희생되었다. 상왕조는 이러한 인간희생제의를 통하여 중심과 주변의 위계 관계를 새롭게 구축할 수 있었다. 또한 인간희생제의는 이렇게 구축된 위계질서를 주변 세계로 전달하고 확산시킬 수 있었던 통로이기도 하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the paper I pursued the purpose and the intention of the human sacrifice in Shang dynasty. The subjects of the human sacrifice have been made considerable achievements so far since the 1930s. However, the questions about the purpose of this ritual and its significance are not sufficiently answered yet. The archaeological data and the oracle bone inscriptions during Shang dynasty revealed the multiple informations about the human sacrifice at the time. In Shang dynasty, the human beings/bodies were victimized as the sacrifices along with the animals, and in many cases the human bodies only had been the objects of this sacrifices. It is confirmed that the various titles of the sacrificed human beings and their status were shown in the oracle bone inscriptions. However, their status are not fully deciphered and known yet. Nevertheless, it is clear that the war prisoners occupied a considerable proportion among the human sacrifices. This inscriptions tell the human desire to communicate with the world of the gods.
The human sacrifice is considered to be a channelling, and a kind of communication method to the super/supra natural. As far as the human sacrifice is interpreted as a way of a harmonious order between gods and men, there still remains the problem unsolved. For example, this interpretation does not satisfy the questions why the people of certain status, such as the war prisoners, had taken great portion of the sacrificial offerings during Sang Dynasty, and why the frequency and the size of the human sacrifices had been sharply decreased toward the late Shang Dynasty. I focused on the war prisoners’ significant status, who were abundant and easily manipulated and mobilized as the sacrificial objects to solve the problems I raised. The conclusions are as follows. The Shang dynasty intended to establish a strict hierarchy between the center and the periphery, the inside and the outside by way of mobilizing the captive prisoners in the war into the human sacrifices. These rituals were held and performed in the major cities, the center of Shang dynasty. The cities of Shang dynasty were the ceremonial complexes where the various rites were planned and practiced. The prisoners of war were publicly sacrificed at the ritual centers of these cities. Shang dynasty was able to build up a hierarchical relationship between the center and the periphery through these human sacrifices. In addition, the human sacrifice was also a pathway that was able to transmit and spread the hierarchy thus constructed to the surrounding world.
