The main purpose of this article is to examine how the Mozi’s Economical(節用) theory inherent in his writings about「Frugal Funerals(節葬)」,「Useless of Music(非樂)」provides theoretical implications for solving the poverty problem in the world today. Since World War Ⅱ, mankind has enjoyed material affluence thanks to the development of science and technology, but with this, inequality between countries has become a serious problem threatening global order and peace. poverty is a relative and diverse meaning according to time and space. however, the ongoing social scientific analysis and definition of this is based on the perception that it is a problem that must be solved.
This article examined the significance of the Mozi’s Economical(節用) theory by dividing it into two main aspects. The first is the ethical aspect of making a society in which humanity is embodied. Mozi presented th importance of practical and ethical consumption to the wealthy at the time and insisted on the interest and consideration for the lives of the people suffering from absolute poverty. Based on this, it was intended to eliminate the sense of incompatibility caused by social inequality and to maintain social order and stability. The second is the material aspect of building a rich society. In the eyes of Mozi, humans are beings who lead their lives by relying on their own power. Therefore, the wealthy emphasized to ensure labor for the people to maintain their survival and to share the benefits among members of the community by allowing them to solve their own poverty problems on their own.
Mozi’s Economical(節用) theory emphasizes the moral practice of poverty and consumption desirable for mankind today, who is different to the poverty of other countries due to luxury, waste, and pleasure, and also provides good implications for the sense of responsibility and aid that rich countries should have for poor countries. Mozi pursued a society where humanity was embodied and materially rich, and a community where everyone shared each other’s benefits. This is no different from the ideal of the global village that our humanity should pursue today.
