서사적 전환기 시대의 소설과 대중성 －김호연의 『불편한 편의점』을 중심으로－ = The novel and popularity of Narrative Transition Period - With a focus on Kim Ho-yeon's The Inconvenient Convenience Store

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 2010년대를 ‘서사적 전환기’로 인식하면서 김호연의 장편소설 『불편한 편의점』에 나타난 작가의식과 대중성에 주목하였다. 여기서 서사적 전환기라 함은 2010년 후반에 급부상한 웹소설, 웹툰의 파급력으로 문학 장의 변모된 상황과 2019년 발생한 ‘코로나 19’로 인한 팬데믹 시대로서 문학에 끼친 영향을 염두에 둔 것이다.
이 글은 서사적 전환기의 한가운데에서 많은 독자들에게 관심을 받은 김호연의 『불편한 편의점』이 지니고 있는 대중성은 무엇인지 규명하는 데 소기의 목적이 있다. 서사적 전환기에 관심을 둔 것은 베스트셀러의 대중적 요소를 살펴보려 할 때 작품 내재적 요소뿐만 아니라 사회문화적 환경을 고려해야만 작품의 특성을 제대로 볼 수 있기 때문이다.

This study focused on Kim Ho-yeon's consciousness as a writer and his popular appeal in his novel The Inconvenient Convenience Store by perceiving the 2010s as a "narrative transition period." Here, the decade was called a narrative transition period based on the changed situation of the literature field under the influence of web novels and webtoons that rapidly emerged in the latter part of 2010 and the impacts of "COVID-19," which broke out in 2019, on literature during the pandemic era.
The rapid rise of web novels in the late 2010s has huge impacts on the writer's perception changes. When they have experienced the influence of such cultural content as web novels and webtoons, even writers of serious novels change their consideration for readers in their writing. The pandemic situation that began in 2019 reinforced further his attitude that changed toward readers. His goal of writing became novels of heartwarming content that would give readers comfort and consolation during the pandemic era.
The Inconvenient Convenience Store by Kim that has embraced this narrative transition period holds elements of popular appeal as a bestseller. There are a couple of important factors that contribute to its huge attraction among readers. It gives catharsis to readers by showing the problem-solving processes. Its content is based on heartwarming humanism around the family. Finally, the conversations and moods among the characters similar to lines in a play have very comical farce nature and accordingly give comfort to readers suffering from the accumulated sense of fatigue.
