<AbsText> WAR, as everybody knows, is productive of many horrors which overtake the young and old, rich and poor, men, women, and children, but probably nowhere has greater fortitude and bravery to be shown than by those, who, wearing the Red Cross on their arm, follow the truck of troops. Very little of the excitement of war is the lot of doctors and nurses, for theirs it is to cope with the aftermath in all its naked ugliness. There is none of the brilliancy of actual warfare where the Red Cross waves, the grim silence is only broken perchance by the moan of some poor wretch in mortal agony, feeble humanity, tortured too often beyond human endurance, calls unceasingly for immediate and careful attention, operations of the most serious nature have to be undertaken almost hourly, amputations are matters of common occurrence, and in addition to the victims of iron and steel, the medical staff have continually to be prepared to cope with that still greater foe of the battlefield, sickness. </AbsText>
