키치가 주는 안락함과 소외감을 통한 미적 경험 - 아브라함 몰르의 “키치의 심리학”을 중심으로 - = Aesthetic Experience through Comfort and Alienation of Kitsch - focused on “Psychology of Kitsch” by Abraham Moles -

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to revisit the concept of kitsch presented in Clement Greenberg's "Avant-Garde and Kitsch" and contemporary aesthetic experience discourse of kitsch. In the mid 20th century, Greenberg criticized kitsch to emphasize the purity, experimentation, and transcendence of avant-garde art and regarded kitsch as a vulgar imitation that leads the public to fall into sentimentality. However, in the contemporary art scene, we encounter various kinds of kitsch that are so much more complex and fluid than ever and that cannot be contained in Greenberg’s kitsch. Therefore, in an effort to examine the concept of Greenberg’s kitsch, this study focuses on the kitsch theory of Abraham Moles, a social psychologist. In a method to carry it out, Greenberg's kitsch is first analyzed to examine its theoretical validity in the aesthetic experience discourse. Then this study turns to look into Abraham Moles's kitsch that is defined as a relationship between human beings and things. Particularly, this study tries to derive key features of kitsch aesthetics by examining the kitsch feelings of comfort and alienation.
Finally, the result of these theoretical approaches is applied to the analysis of Andy Warhol's early artworks and exhibitions, through which this study explores how ‘kitsch’ derives its unique aesthetic experience on the layers of things and space. In conclusion, this study opines that Moles’ comfort is contained in Warhol’s artworks. Reapproaching kitsch from a new and broader perspective, we hope this study will help enrich the discourse of aesthetic experience of kitsch in contemporary art.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 시각예술 분야에서 주로 통용되는 클레멘트 그린버그의 “아방가르드와 키치” 글에제시된 키치 개념과 동시대의 키치의 미적 경험 담론을 검토하는 것에 있다. 20세기 중반 그린버그는아방가르드 예술의 순수성, 실험정신, 초월성 등을 강조하기 위하여 그 대척점에 키치를 두고 이를 통속적이고 대중에게 싸구려 감성을 자극하는 모방품으로 강도 높게 비판하였다. 그러나 20세기 현대미술사를 들여다보면 그가 이분법적 태도로 정의한 키치 개념만으로는 규정되지 않는 다양한 형태의키치가 보다 복합적이고 유동적인 상태로 존재한다는 것을 발견할 수 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 그린버그의 키치 개념을 보완하고자 사회심리학자 아브라함 몰르의 키치 이론을 중점적으로 살펴본다. 연구 방법으로 먼저 그린버그의 키치 개념을 분석하여 미적 경험 담론에서의 이론적 유효성을 검토하고, 이어서 인간과 사물의 관계방식으로서 키치를 정의했던 몰르의 논의를 살펴본다. 특히 세부적으로 키치의 안락함과 소외감의 감정 상태를 분석하여 키치 미학의 주요 특징들을 도출하려 한다. 마지막으로이를 앤디 워홀의 초기 전시와 작품 분석에 적용하며, 이들을 통해 사물과 공간의 층위에서 키치가 어떠한 미적 경험에 이르도록 하는지 탐색해 보고자 한다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 워홀의 작품들에 몰르가 논한 안락함의 감정이 담겨있다고 보며, 키치를 새롭고 확장된 시각에서 재접근하고자 한다. 본 연구가 현대미술에서의 키치의 미적 경험 연구와 담론이 풍성해지는 데에 기여할 수 있길 기대한다.
