Ongoing study of searching for antioxidant substances from natural resources, ethyl acetate (EA) soluble fraction of the Ajuga decumbens (Labiatae) methanol extract showed the potent DPPH radical scavenging activity. The EA fraction of A. decumbens (EAAD) was measured for the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and oxidative stress tolerance activities, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels using C. elegans model system. Moreover, SOD-3 expression was checked by using a transgenic strain, CF1553 to see the stress response gene is regulated by the increased stress tolerance of C. elegans treated by the EAAD. Consequently, EAAD enhanced the SOD and catalase activities, and decreased ROS levels in a dose-dependent manner. And, the EAAD-treated CF1553 worm revealed higher SOD-3::GFP intensity than the control C. elegans.
