It is a very extreme case in Joseon to hold religious service to foreign sages such as Zhu Xi at memorial halls. This study set out to empirically examine the process and innate purpose of selecting Zhu Xi to hold religious service to at some memorial halls in middle Joseon through specific cases and infer its meanings associated with the social history of the country. The ideology and academic achievements of Zhu Xi had overall impacts on Joseon throughout its existence, and those impacts are particularly apparent in the construction and operation of a memorial hall. It is highly noteworthy that the percentage of founding was high in the early days of memorial halls and that their constructions were concentrated in certain areas such as Hwanghae Province. The Sarim power, which emerged in the 16th century, tried to implement the policies of Dohak, which was their ideal, in local governance. Construction of memorial halls was the most important policy for them to promote the Hyangpung and the concentration of the Sajok and to fulftll the ideology of Dohak politics. In that period, Zhu Xi was the subject of respect and worship that no one could deny and the ideal figure armed with all the optimal conditions to deserve religious service at memorial halls. The figure for a memorial hall to hold religious service to was a determinant that defined the purpose and characteristics of its construction, which makes comparing the memorial halls that held religious service to the same figure in terms of foundation for construction, history, and the nature and goal of the leading force a means of organically explaining the universality and peculiarity of each memorial hall and the characteristics of their areas in social history. The previous studies on memorial halls related to Zhu Xi either heavily focused on certain aspects or delved into figures whose partisan nature was apparent, thus presenting limitations to . the examination of the specific nature of the memorial halls that held religious service to Zhu Xi. Fortunately, there is a recent trend of segmenting researches on memorial halls and revisiting the studies on the individual memorial halls and figures from a microscopic perspective. The study defined the period until the former half of the 17th century, when the partisan tendency was in full bloom, as the early days of the memorial halls holding memorial service to Zhu Xi and empirically investigated the nature of the memorial halls those days.
