Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for improving the working environment of firefighters who combine work and childcare by studying job satisfaction and organizational immersion with the presence of infants and toddlers and the use of a family-friendly system.
Methods: The subjects of this study were firefighters working in Daejeon Fire Organization who distributed structured questionnaires using e-mail and collected 326 of them. The statistical program SPSS 26.0 was utilized to analyze the collected data, and independent T-test, frequency analysis, factor analysis and reliability verification were performed.
Results
1. The job satisfaction level(2.64 points) of the target group with infants and toddlers was lower than the job satisfaction level(2.85 points) of the target group without infants and toddlers(t=-2.734, p=.007).
2. The difference in job satisfaction due to the presence of infants and toddlers showed statistically significant differences in self-development(t=-2.634, p=0.009), workload(t=-3.274, p=0.001), remuneration(t=-3.334, p=0.001), family-friendly systems(t=-2.554, p=0.011), family-friendly facilities(t=-2.091, p=0.038).
3. The Organizational immersion level(3.27 points) of the target group with infants and toddlers was lower than the job satisfaction level(3.76 points) of the target group without infants and toddlers(t=-5.662, p=.000).
4. The difference in organizational immersion due to the presence of infants and toddlers showed statistically significant differences in senior officer's help(t=-4.544, p=0.000), senior officer's listening(t=-4.534, p=0.000), relationship with colleagues(t=-4.051, p=0.000), colleague's help(t=-4.679, p=0.000), job immersion(t=-4.332, p=0.000), intimacy(t=-3.947, p=0.000), pride(t=-5.189, p=0.000), and attachment(t=-4.143, p=0.000).
5. The job satisfaction level(2.65 points) of the target group with experience using the family-friendly system was lower than the job satisfaction level(2.88 points) of the target group with no experience using the family friendly system(t=-3.042, p=.003).
6. There were statistically significant differences in job satisfaction depending on family-friendly system in self development(t=-2.951, p=0.003), workload(t=-2.672, p=0.008), remuneration(t=-2.277, p=0.024), compensation(t=-2.063, p=0.040), family-friendly systems(t=-3.327, p=0.001), family-friendly facilities(t=-2.833, p=0.005), and family-friendly welfare comparative satisfaction(t=-2.475, p=0.014).
7. The Organizational immersion level(3.35 points) of the target group with experience using the family-friendly system was lower than the Organizational immersion level(3.78 points) of the target group with no experience using the family-friendly system(t=-5.215, p=.000).
8. There were statistically significant differences in Organizational immersion depending on family-friendly system in senior officer's help(t=-3.269, p=0.001), senior officer's listening(t=-3.634, p=0.000), relationship with colleagues(t=-3.557, p=0.000), colleague's help(t=-4.283, p=0.000), job immersion(t=-3.072, p=0.002), intimacy(t=-4.486, p=0.000), pride(t=-4.720, p=0.000), and attachment(t=-5.275, p=0.000)Conclusion: The findings suggest that firefighters, including shift workers, should be interested in improving family-friendly system and facility so that there is no difficulty in combining work and infants and toddlers care. It also suggests the need to create a family-friendly workplace culture and atmosphere in firefighting organizations.
