Thepaper aims to analyze the views of college and college life, based on a comparativestudy of conceptual metaphors created by Korean students and French and Italianstudents through a questionnaire study. Korean students turn out to have far morenegative views than French and Italian students. Korean students mostly view college asa place of intense competition and heavy stress as reflected in such conceptualmetaphors as [COLLEGE IS DESERT] or [COLLEGE IS JUNGLE] as starklycontrasted with such metaphors as [COLLEGE IS HOME] or [COLLEGE ISJOURNEY] by the French and Italian students. Korean students’ negative view ofcollege is in the same vein with their critical view of professors, exams and college lifeas reflected in such conceptual metaphors as [PROFESSORS ARE CALL CENTER],[EXAM IS TIME BOMB] and [COLLEGE FRIENDS ARE DRY CLAY]. In contrast, the French and Italian students mostly show a reasonable and positive stance by creatingsuch metaphors as [PROFESSORS ARE COACHES], [EXAM IS ROLLERCOASTER] and [COLLEGE FRIENDS ARE SAILORS]. We interpret this researchresult as a direct reflection of different realities of colleges and college life in the two groups and discuss its implication to shed light on the direction of changes needed for college education in the Korean society
