Sixty-five operated patients were observed, 50 intraabdominal cases, and 15 non-laparotomy ones.
Amylase determination was done by the method of Van Loon. The value of serum amylase was measured before and 6, 24, 48, and 72 hours after operation respectively.
The results obtained are summarized as follows;
1) Out of 12 patients who had subtotal gastrectomies. 6(50%) showed elevations in the serum amylase concentratiions.
2) Out of 9 patients after biliary tract operations, 3 patients (33%) showed elevations in the serum amylase, on the of which common ducts were explored.
3) In 14 patients after gynecological operations, 2(13%) showed elevations in the serum amylase levels. In 14 patients after other abdomiral procedures, 2(14%) showed elevations in serum amylase.
4) In 15 patients following extraabdominal operations, 14except thyroidectomy were not elevated in serum amylase level.
