The native Indian, while uncontaminated by the vices of civilized man, is a proud, independent, high-minded being--possessing many virtues of the highest grade, but subject to strong passions, which are not under the control of reason or principle; extremely jealous of personal freedom, and ready to sacrifice any thing to preserve it.
