Respecting the Indians west of the Rocky Mountains, he remarks: "Generally, I should say, they strongly resemble the original inhabitants on this side of the continent, more particularly those who inhabited the sea coast, when our ancestors first visited it. The native Indian, while uncontaminated by the vices of civilized man, is a proud, independent, high-minded being--possessing many virtues of the highest grade, but subject to strong passions, which are not under the control of reason or principle; extremely jealous of personal freedom, and ready to sacrifice any thing to preserve it.
