Background and purpose of this thesis is to find out structural background and meaning of funeral rite procedures, to consider their functions and things on which symbolism inherent in the procedures based, to analyze appearance of EumYangOHaeng Theory through the whole period of mourning, to review influence of the EumYangOHaeng Theory on funeral rites and then, to investigate ancestors' view on life and death.
Funeral rite procedure prepares funeral from the whole period of mourning; disposes and lays the dead body; and, take a series of complicated process of rite to sublimate it to ancestral god later.
Funeral rite procedures are responsibility and duty of survived family members who shared their life with the late precious people and finalize final departure with them and therefore, the procedures are very important ones to be performed on the basis of courtesy and filial duty.
If death comes near, they do Cheongeojeongcham; if disease is serious, they clean inside and outside the house; they move the patient to a formal bed; and, they change clothes with official uniform or clean casual clothes with the patient head to the east under a window of northern wall. In the stage of Sokgwang and Gijeolnaegok, they wait for the patient last breath with stabling inside and outside the house, and they can see the final breath by movement of Sinmyeon. Next, as a ceremony of inviting the soul of the dead, they perform service of Decoration Day hoping restoration of the dead to god.
As the first stage of disposing the dead body, they conduct Susi and make a coffin. After Soryeonm and Daeryeom, they finalize the procedures with Balin, Geupmyo and Bangok and then, come back to their home.
In the past, they held ancestors in veneration and earnestly practiced filial duty with courtesy through funeral procedures but it is quite different now. It is required to reconsider exiting simple funeral rites which only pursue convenience and reasonableness and then, to wisely keep what is to be maintained.
Like the procedures to send parents or ancestors carefully, ritual service to the dead as the god of ancestor shows that filial duty has to continue even after their death. It is understood that filial duty is a virtue to be practiced not only during existence of parents but also after their death.
