We have intuitive everyday knowledge about the world around us, which is called ‘naive theory’ and used for understanding various facts and phenomena. According to this, elementary students already had ‘naive geography’ about certain geographical concept before getting geography teaching in school, and it affects students’ learning geographical concepts. So I try to know what fourth graders have naive geography about ‘terrain’. Students’ answers were very typical. They said that People living in mountainous areas are engaged in forestry, agriculture and livestock farming, and people living in rivers and coastal areas are engaged in fishing, and people living in plains are engaged in agriculture. According to the analysis, we can get three implications. First, when introducing certain terrains, we should provide opportunities to identify various aspects in addition to the typical image of each terrain. Second, to make sense of the interaction between humans and nature, we must consider the way of people live on each terrain. Third, we need to present combinations of different terrains because rural and urban communities are formed where different terrains meet. Offering separate pictures of mountains, rivers, plains, and coastal areas would present incomplete data.
