This thesis is motivated by the fact that the voting system has failed to function properly since it was introduced in Korea in the late 1940's. And the thesis is led by the two questions: What are the causes of this failure? What can we do to secure the well-functioning of the voting system?
I base the analysis on the comparison of the Korean voting system with the British one. The comparison is in turn conducted in the light of four variables: What is the influence of the social structure on the voting behavior in the two countries? What is the correlation between the political culture and the voting behavior in the two countries? What influence does the degree of the institutionalization of political parties have on the voting behavior in the two countries? What is the correlation between the national image of political parties and the voting behavior in the two countries?
This comparative analysis will lead us to an intuitive perspective on the role of political parties in voting in Korea and Britain.
