영상 아카이브 활용의 측면에서 본 편집 다큐멘터리의 가치 : <88/18>과 <모던코리아> 시리즈를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1980년대 이후의 한국 현대사를 돌아본다는 취지로 제작된 <88/18>과 <모던코리아> 시리즈는 KBS가 소장하고 있는 영상기록물을 창작 자원으로 삼아 제작한 편집 다큐멘터리(compilation documentary)이다. 편집 다큐멘터리는 제작 과정에서 촬영을 배제하고 기존에 존재하는 영상물의 편집을 통해 제작한 다큐멘터리를 지칭하는데, 다양한 아카이브를 비롯한 여러 출처로부터 발견한 영상물을 재구성함으로써 새로운 관점이나 의미를 부여한다는 특징을 지닌다. 이 연구는 <88/18>과 <모던코리아> 시리즈가 아카이브의 활용이라는 측면에서 지니는 기록학적 의의를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
<88/18>과 <모던코리아> 시리즈에서 주목할 점은 영상기록물을 생산되던 시점의 목적 그대로 활용하지 않는다는 것이다. 다큐멘터리 연출자는 30여 년이 지난 시점에서 기록을 다른 측면에서 해석하고 가공해 활용한다. <88/18>과 <모던코리아> 시리즈는 아카이브에서 기록을 발굴하고 재해석한 결과물이며, 기록에 부여된 단일하고 고정적인 의미 이상으로 새로운 의미와 통찰을 발현시킨다는 점에서 가치를 지닌다. 또한 여기서 활용된 영상기록물은 방송영상물로 대중의 집단기억 형성과 역사 인식에 주요하게 영향을 끼쳐 온 이미지이다. <88/18>과 <모던코리아> 시리즈는 이를 재료 삼아 과거를 재구성하고 그 이면을 드러내며 주목받지 못했던 부분을 다시 조명한다는 점에서 집단기억의 재생산과 역사적 다양화에 기여한다.
<88/18>과 <모던코리아> 시리즈가 아카이브를 매개로 과거에 접속할 수 있는 것은 기록의 증거적, 정보적 가치에서 기인한다. 동시에 다큐멘터리에서 활용된 이미지가 실제 과거의 대상과 연결되어 있다는 감각은 시청자에게 흥미와 감동을 유발하는 요인이 된다. 한편, 편집 다큐멘터리에서 기록은 일정부분 가공되고 변형된 형태로 활용되기 때문에 기록의 맥락에 대한 조사 및 연구가 선행되어야 사실의 오류를 방지하고 과거에 대한 입체적인 해석이 가능하다.
<88/18>과 <모던코리아> 시리즈는 아카이브를 창작 자원으로 활용한 하나의 사례로서 기록의 가치와 활용 가능성을 확장하고 아카이브를 활성화시킨다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

<88/18> and <Modern Korea> series, which were produced to look back on modern korean history since the 1980s, are compilation documentaries produced using archival footage collected by KBS as a creative resource. A compilation documentary refers to a documentary that is produced by editing the existing footage instead of conducting the filming. In addition, a typical feature of the compilation documentary is that it delivers a new point of view or new meanings under the process of reorganizing found footage from various resources including archives. The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of <88/18> and <Modern Korea> series through the aspect of using archives.
What is noteworthy in the <88/18> and <Modern Korea> series is that the archival footage is not used as it was for the purpose of production. The director applied it to reinterpret and process different aspects based on more than 30 years of historical gap. These series were the outcome of reusing and reinterpreting the archival records, and further, they had significant value to reveal new meanings and insights beyond the single and fixed meaning given to the records. In addition, study results showed that these archival footage was the significant image that supported the public formation of collective memory and historical cognition. By using previously mentioned resources, the <88/18> and <Modern Korea> series purposefully contributed to reproducing the past, revealing the hidden backgrounds, and appealing to the areas that were not recognized to support recreating the collective memory and to diversify the history.
A reason <88/18> and <Modern Korea> series were capable of accessing the past through archives as a medium is based on the evidential value and informational value of the records. At the same time, the sense that the images in the documentary are related to actual historical facts triggers the viewer’s interests and emotions. Since the compilation documentary uses partially edited and modified records, this study reminded the importance of investigation and close literature reviews based on the context to prevent factual errors and to encourage multilateral interpretation of past. The <88/18> and <Modern Korea> series were examples of using archives as a creative resource. This study found these compilation documentaries are significant that they activated the archives to enlarge the value and potential use of the archival records.
