Solving Problems Together: Findings from the Early Stages of a Networked Improvement Community
Kallio, Julie M ProQuest Dissertations & Theses The University of 2020 해외박사(DDOD)
This three-article dissertation is a case study of the initial stages of a Networked Improvement Community built around the practices in personalized learning schools. Networked Improvement Communities (NICs) are a type of research-practice partnership that tackle how to sustain and scale change across school communities. Research on how they are initiated is needed as this model is adapted across a range of contexts. Case studies in particular provide the depth of exploration to understand what aspects of the NIC model worked in a particular context, for whom, and under what conditions. This case study focuses on the Personalization in Practice–Networked Improvement Community (PiPNIC). Each article then takes up one of the three guiding questions of NICs: what problem(s) are we trying to solve?, whose expertise is needed to solve these problems?, and what are the social arrangements that will enable this work? The first article examines how the PiPNIC initiation team identified a problem of practice through radical listening to educators and educational leaders across the state. Drawing on qualitative data, the analysis traces how the activities of the initiation team narrowed the problem space and selected a problem of practice. The second article examines how the NIC activities supported participants in sharing their problem-based expertise. This qualitative study illustrates how the NIC created the conditions for ideas to be generated, selected, and integrated through the coupling of network and team activities and authentic design tasks. Finally, the third article explores how collaborative design fosters help-based interactions, and how these social arrangements provide the conditions for the relational trust necessary to solve hard problems. Each article addresses practical and theoretical considerations for initiating NICs, contributing specifically to the current NIC initiation framework. By organizing this inquiry as an instrumental case study, the goal is to produce insight in the spirit of continuous improvement, rather than an evaluation of whether NICs “work.” As such, this case contributes to the collective effort to leverage the wisdom of research, practice, and design knowledge to improve schools.

Cantonese, a Sino-Tibetan language with a long history, is primarily spoken in the Guangdong region of China, as well as in Hong Kong, Macau, and various overseas Chinese communities. It holds significant political, economic, and cultural value. However, due to various factors, the usage environment for Cantonese has become increasingly limited, leading to a substantial decline in the number of speakers in recent years, thus posing challenges for cultural transmission. Nonetheless, with the advent of the information age, Cantonese is encountering new opportunities for growth, with the internet emerging as a novel avenue for its dissemination. This study, therefore, takes the Cantonese online community as its starting point, aiming to investigate the current status of Cantonese culture on the internet and systematically discuss strategies to achieve the sustainable development of Cantonese and its associated culture. The research period extends from 2022 to early 2024, focusing on the Cantonese online community on the popular Chinese platform 'Bilibili.' The study commences with an examination of four representative influencers who promote Cantonese culture, analyzing their video content, interactive comments, and interviews with community subscribers. This study employs qualitative research methods to better understand the cultural context of the Cantonese-speaking community and to explore their needs and desires. Firstly, netnography was utilized to conduct long-term observations of Cantonese online communities, collecting relevant visual and textual materials. Subsequently, a combination of semi-structured interviews and online focus groups was used to gather multidimensional data, systematically analyzing the cultural phenomena and user needs within these communities. Finally, triangulation was employed to ensure the reliability of the research. Additionally, a conceptual diagram of the Cantonese online community ecosystem was derived, exploring the cultural themes, influencing factors, and developmental suggestions for the community. The findings indicated that policy, culture, public services, and education play crucial roles in the inheritance and development of the Cantonese language. The diversity of local culture and strong cultural identity significantly influence the cultural life and identity formation of community members. Ultimately, by integrating the concept of sustainable development, a design strategy framework for the sustainable development of the Cantonese language and culture was established, based on ecological, economic, and social dimensions. The framework consists of three main components: ecosystem construction strategy, revenue diversification strategy, and cultural group concentration strategy. The ecosystem construction strategy focuses on content creation for the Cantonese language and culture, cross-media promotion, and digital exhibitions to enhance cultural influence and tourism industry development. The revenue diversification strategy aims to increase the market value and economic impact of Cantonese culture through brand design, advertising placement, and partnerships. The cultural group concentration strategy involves segmenting the user market, encouraging user participation and cross-cultural exchange activities to boost cultural experience and learning interest, and promoting the spread of Cantonese culture. This design strategy framework can be applied to various individuals and organizations, including Cantonese people, online community platform operators, and Cantonese cultural industry practitioners, providing new perspectives and methods for protecting and inheriting the Cantonese language and culture. This study investigates the representation of Cantonese language and culture in online communities, identifying the thoughts and needs of subscribers. The findings aim to enhance the understanding of how Cantonese language and culture disseminate within online communities and their impact on user behavior. Additionally, the proposed sustainable development design strategy framework for Cantonese culture offers practical directions for future research. Beyond providing significant value to the Cantonese cultural community, this strategy can serve as a reference for the preservation of other regional languages and cultures. It highlights the potential of integrating anthropological methods in design studies, serving as a reference for interdisciplinary research aiming to address complex sustainable development issues. Furthermore, this study offers a foundation for relevant Chinese institutions to formulate policies for the protection of regional languages and cultures, thereby enhancing policy effectiveness. Future research should include a longer tracking period and a more extensive sample encompassing various types of Cantonese online communities. It should also investigate the impact of new technologies across platforms and social media on the sustainable development of Cantonese culture, encouraging multidisciplinary collaborative research. Collaboration with government departments or social organizations should be explored to provide a solid foundation for the preservation and development of Cantonese culture.
Off Into the Sunset: Designing for the Inevitable End of Projects
Pitt, Caroline R University of Washington ProQuest Dissertations & 2023 해외박사(DDOD)
Ending projects - in whatever form that takes - is a known area of difficulty for research that involves designing and implementing technologies with community partners. The ending process is particularly salient to underserved and marginalized communities and populations. This dissertation explores the project ecosystem and power dynamics in which researchers and participants exist when collaborating on technology design projects involving youth and their communities. From this exploration, I look to identify types of and strategies for ending, to build a framework for advancing design justice in the ending process. The first set of empirical studies in this dissertation address the power dynamics and roles within community-based technology design projects and multigenerational co-design teams. From this work we learn how we can encourage youth and their communities to take ownership of learning technologies through participatory design and involvement in the technology implementation process. Subsequent studies focus on the long-term impacts of such projects and how the community and researchers can begin to transition these technologies to community ownership, while understanding the resource constraints of both the researchers and communities, particularly the youth members. The final study - a cross case analysis of two long-term projects - extends this work on power dynamics and impacts, using the understanding of systems and infrastructure to frame our understanding of the equitable ending process and what different endings might look like. Together, these studies provide grounding for a framework to create a more just and equitable ending process, specifically creating guidelines for designing the end of the research cycle in an ethical and practical manner. This dissertation provides a number of empirical insights on the development and changes within relationships and power dynamics throughout the course of community-based educational technology design projects involving youth; the challenges, obstacles, and opportunities at the conclusion of the life cycle of the aforementioned projects; and the different ways ending a project occurs. The work also has theoretical implications, drawing on value sensitive design, research-practice partnerships, and other theories around community relationships to form an understanding of project ending as a space for design. Finally, this work contributes a theoretically-grounded methodological framework for designing projects involving long-term technology development with youth and their communities that plan for and incorporate the ending of the project, derived from the findings in the previous contributions. Through this work I explore the dimensions and considerations in ending a project that involves a long-term partnership with a community, developing ways to discuss, navigate, and plan for the closing process and facilitating less extractive and more mutually beneficial community research partnerships.
A STUDY ON MEDIA-BASED PARTICIPATORY COMMUNITY SPACE DESIGN FOR INTERGENERATIONAL
LIU KAINA
In contemporary society, rapid changes in social structure and the acceleration of digitalization have exacerbated the breakdown of intergenerational communication, creating significant barriers to the harmonious formation of communities. Media content plays a crucial role in facilitating intergenerational connection, contributing to communication across generations due to its broad appeal and strong dissemination power. However, the current design of community spaces fails to effectively promote intergenerational communication due to issues such as functional separation, lack of interaction, and low participation levels. This study analyzes participatory community space design centered on media content, presenting both theoretical and practical approaches to constructing a more integrated community environment. The study first organizes the basic theories of intergenerational communication and examines the role and characteristics of media content in intergenerational interactions. It also conducts a comprehensive analysis of the current state and issues in the design of intergenerationally integrated community spaces through case studies from both domestic and international contexts. Subsequently, six representative residential communities in Guangzhou are selected as research subjects for field investigations, behavioral observations, surveys, and interviews. The study deeply analyzes the behavioral demands and interaction preferences of various generations. Based on the collected data, a participatory community space design framework is proposed, with "co-creation, sharing, and empathy" as the core concepts. The study establishes design principles focusing on the creation, experience, and dissemination of media content. The study is organized into five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the background, necessity, and research methods of the study. Chapter 2 reviews theories and research trends related to intergenerational communication and media content, clarifying the perspectives and analytical framework of the study. Chapter 3 analyzes the behavioral characteristics, spatial needs, and key factors hindering intergenerational communication based on the research data. Chapter 4 derives the core elements of intergenerational communication community space design and presents specific design methodologies in three dimensions: space function integration, creation of interaction scenarios, and application of multimedia technologies. Chapter 5 verifies the proposed design principles through representative community renovation projects, studying the practical potential for intergenerational communication by introducing media content creation zones, multifunctional shared spaces, and intergenerational experiential activities. The results of the study are as follows: 1.By analyzing the behavioral patterns and media content preferences of different generations in community spaces, media scene types and behavior patterns that can promote intergenerational interaction are proposed. 2.A participatory community space design model mediated by media content is established, and design principles based on the integration of content creation, experience, and dissemination are suggested. 3.Through design works, specific space design proposals, such as digital co-creation spaces, intergenerational communication corridors, and shared interaction zones, are examined. Operational strategies like time-based sharing and activity organization are proposed to optimize space utilization efficiency. This study emphasizes that the design of intergenerational communication community spaces is not only effective in resolving intergenerational disconnection but also plays a significant role in fostering a harmonious community environment and enhancing residents' sense of well-being. Through the research findings and practical proposals, it is expected to provide new directions for future community design and contribute to the development of a socially integrated society.
