Vol.11 No.2

This study examines the relationship between mental health and postnatal depression of mothers at six months after childbirth and the effect of postnatal depression on mother-child relationships at 24 and 48 months after childbirth, which is based on the longitudinal study on mental development of infants and toddlers as part of the Childhood Asthma and Allergic Diseases Cohort Study (COCOA), a long-term follow-up study sponsored by the Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (KCDC). The subjects were 228 mother-child pairs: 145 typical mothers and their children and 83 mothers with postnatal depression and their children based on the cut-off point of the postnatal depression scale administered at six months after childbirth. Depression levels of mothers were measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies – Depression (CES-D), anxiety by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), satisfaction with life by the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), satisfaction with marriage by the Korean version of the Marital Satisfaction Inventory (K-MSI), parenting stress by the Korean version of Parenting Stress Index (K-PSI), and mother-child relationships by the Korean version of Parenting Relationship Questionnaire-Preschool (K-PRQ-P). The findings are as follows: (1) depression, anxiety, and parenting stress of mothers in the depression group were higher than those of typical mothers at 24 and 48 months after childbirth while their satisfaction with life and marriage was lower than that of their counterparts; (2) postnatal depression of mothers had a negative effect on mother-child relationships at 24 and 48 months after childbirth; and (3) age, monthly income, and postnatal depression of mothers had a negative effect on relational frustration that mothers felt in relationships with their children at 24 and 48 months after childbirth.

Vol.27 No.3

This study sought to examine the mediating effect of mothers' attachment on the relationship between the parenting stress of mothers and adolescents' depression, and to investigate the conditional direct and indirect effects of the parenting stress of fathers. Data from 1,142 participants in the 15th wave (2022) of the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC) were analyzed using the latent moderated structural equations (LMS) approach. The results indicated that mothers' attachment significantly mediated the effect of their parenting stress on adolescents' depression. For instance, higher levels of parenting stress were associated with lower mothers' attachment, which subsequently increased adolescents' depression. Second, the parenting stress of fathers showed a significant conditional indirect effect on the relationship between mothers' parenting stress and adolescents' depression through mothers' attachment. This suggests that higher levels of fathers' parenting stress amplify the effect of mothers' parenting stress on adolescents' depression through mothers' attachment. These findings highlight the importance of education and support to foster secure attachment and underscore the need to consider the fathers' parenting stress alongside the mothers' parenting stress when understanding adolescent depression.

Vol.20 No.4

This study aims to analyze the effects of mother’s temperament and depression on a child’s character development, which is mediated by parenting attitude. One hundred and twenty three elementary students (boys=60, girls=63) and their mothers in seven different regions in Korea filled out questionnaires including TCI-RS, JTCI 7-11, PARQ/Control (Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire/Control), and Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI). Mother's Harm Avoidance (HA) temperament had a significantly positive correlation with Depression, but Persistence (P) temperament had a significantly negative correlation with Depression. Among mother’s temperament traits except Reward Dependence (RD), Novelty Seeking (NS) temperament had a positive correlation with aggression/hostility, indifference/negligence, and undifferentiated rejection of negative parenting attitude. HA temperament had a negative correlation with warmth/affection. It also had a positive correlation with the other negative parenting attitude. Mothers’ temperament, NS and HA had a negative correlation with child’s character, and P had a positive correlation with it. In terms of parenting attitude except for control, mother's depression had a negative correlation with warmth/affection, and it had a positive correlation with the other negative parenting attitudes. Among mother’s temperament traits except for RD, NS and HA had a positive correlation with child’s Self-Directedness (SD) and Cooperativeness (C). In addition, P had a negative correlation with SD and C of a child’s character. Mother’s Parenting Attitude had a significant correlation with child's SD and C character. It also had a positive correlation with warmth/affection attitude and negative correlation with every negative parenting attitude (i.e., aggression/hostility, indifference/negligence and control). In short, Mother’s Temperament and Depression mediated by parenting attitude affects child’s character. In addition, Mother’s Parenting Attitude had a direct effect on child’s character significantly, and mother’s temperament had a significant effect on child’s character indirectly. The significance and limitation of this study were discussed.

Vol.12 No.1

The following study researched how preference for music affects postpartum depression and depression of nursing mothers, as well as the environmental factor that causes postpartum depression. To verify the claim, one-hundred and seven mothers in Seoul Gyeonggi-do, who have experienced six to twenty-four months of eurhythmics music education, were measured for their level of postpartum depression and depression. The measuring tools were postpartum depression self-measure(E.P.D.S.), and depression inventory(B.D.I.). With the collected results of the subjects, f-test, regression analysis, and differential analysis were performed. First, mothers with postpartum depression who have experienced music education program, comparatively scored significantly low in depression. Secondly, the source that affects postpartum depression of mothers that experienced music education, comes from the level of satisfaction from the family"s income and expenditure, availability to plan for childbirth, amount of satisfaction in living with their husband, time for communication with their husband in a week, satisfaction level of the communication with their partner, and the amount of personal time or hobby had significant effect on postpartum depression. Third, the source that affects the depression of mothers that experienced music education, comes from the satisfaction level in the hours of sleep, availability to plan for childbirth, amount of satisfaction in living with their husband, satisfaction level of the communication hours with their husband, and the hours the subject listens to music in a day had significant affect on their depression in the results. By revealing music education"s effect on postpartum depression and depression, the results of this research confirms how music education showed effect in controlling the depressive mood. Also, by comparing the initial scores of postpartum depression and depression, mothers with strong interest in music scored much lower in depression, and when the level of satisfaction of the relationship with their husband dropped, it showed negative effect on postpartum depression and depression as well. This suggests the significance in researching for various approaches to music education.
