Vol.13 No.-

Seokkuram(Seokkuram石窟庵), located on the eastern summit of Mt. Toham near Gyeongju, is a Buddhist shrine in the form of a stone grotto, absolutely unique in East Asian history. The author, viewing Seokkuram not as human-centered but rather a spiritual space, analyzes its uniqueness in light of the fundamental principles of who, what, where, why, when, and how. Methodologically, the paper reinterprets the oldest surviving document concerning Seokkuram found in the Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) from a fresh perspective, and thereby seeks to adduce a new paradigm for research on Seokkuram. Concerning the establishment of Seokkuram, the factual basis of some of the basic questions have already been adequately answered: “who”?Prime Minister Kim Daeseong; “when” the mid-8th century; “where”?in Gyeongju on the eastern summit of Mt. Toham. The first chapter surveys the results of past scholarship, supplementing them in places with the author`s personal views. Continuing with a discussion of the question of “why”, the author analyzes in depth the phrase: “... construct [this] stone Buddhist shrine for [my]departed parents of [a] former generation.” That is, the author notes that the conceptual basis underlying the establishment of Seokkuram incorporated a union of a concern for public good (功德思想) blended with that of filial piety (孝). While such a union had a precedent in Indian Buddhism, the author points out that it was further strengthened within Chinese Buddhism. Accordingly it may be understood as part of the Chinese adaptation of Buddhism. This work places greatest emphasis on Chapter 2, in which the issue of “what was this entity we know as Seokkuram?” is addressed. In fact, the name of Seokkuram (石窟庵) and its prior version, Seokpulsa (Seokpulsa石佛寺), are merely superficial appellations, but up to the present there has been almost no discussion of their true nature or character. The author accords strong significance to a reference to “heavenly palace” (天宮) found in adocument on Buddhist religious teachings, deriving from the first chief monk of Seokpulsa, and sets forth his view that Seokkuram was created by Kim Daeseong as a spiritual space, more specifically as a heavenly palace in which dwelled Indra, ruler of the Trayastrimsa, or Thirty-three Heavens. Last, Chapter 3 concerns itself with ‘how’. Using “heavenly palace” as a central conceptual paradigm, the paper examines the special features of Seokkuram: its location on a mountaintop over a sacred spring, its orientation, its use of stones, and the rotunda of the domed roof. Using these features?which prior scholarship either did not notice, misunderstood, or discussed only partially?a reinterpretation is provided and thereby, at last, it may be said that Seokkuram in its original form is recovered, as created by Kim Daeseong to be in full accord with the countenance of a heavenly palace.

Vol.82 No.2

The heavenly realm in the belief system of Daesoon Jinrihoe is an essential concept which even appears in the brief appellation, ‘Gucheon Sangje (Supreme God of the Ninth Heaven),’ as in Gucheon Eungwon Nwehseong Bohwa Cheonjon Kangseong Sangje (His Holiness the Supreme God Kang of the Ninth Heaven, Celestial Worthy of Universal Creation through His Thunderbolt, the Originator with Whom All Beings Resonate),’ the object of belief. Although the term is considerably important, the range of research is limited, and the number is only a few. ‘Gucheon (the Ninth Heaven)’ has been defined as plural heavens without clear evidence in the research until now. Furthermore, under this premise, it was explained in the theory of the heavenly realm of the East Asian tradition. As the commonality between the heavenly-realm theory in Daesoon belief, and the premise of Gucheon as the Ninth Heaven or the existing East Asian theory has not been specifically found, such an insistence has a limit. In addition, the Thirty-six Heavens, the official heavenly-realm perspective in Daesoon belief, have not been described, so the idea should be re-examined from the fundamental basis. There are only a few official documents that explain the heavenly realm theory of Mugeuk-do (Limitless Dao), which is the origin of Daesoon belief. Accordingly, this analytical study is rather carried out through a variety of other observational records including government-documents during the Japanese colonial period. Mugeuk-do was characterized by its unique shrine structure and rituals; for instance, the dualized shrines named Spirit Hall (靈殿) and the Holy Hall (聖殿), and the rituals for the enshrined gods according to their rank in each temple independently and hierarchically. In particular, the spirit tablet of the Jade Emperor at the Tushita Heaven Palace in the Heaven of Thirty-three Gods, namely the Tushita Heaven, is analyzed as an intrinsic reason for those characteristics. In this aspect, the heavenly realms of Buddhism and Daoism are assimilated with each other. Analyzing the shrine structure of Mugeuk-do through Bohwa Cheonjon (the Celestial Worthy of Universal Creation) of Daoism that has a doctrinal status, and the view on the heavenly realm in the Maitreya belief system of Buddhism, the heavenly realm is divided into the three realms in and out. Additionally, the heaven in the three realms, the Tushita Heaven, the so-called Heaven of Thirty-three Gods, is presided by the Jade Emperor. On the other hand, ‘Gucheon,’ beyond the heavens over the three realms, is governed by Gucheon Sangje. This view is the most compatible with the theory of the heavenly realm in Daoism, fundamentally the Thirty-six Heavens. The view of the Bohwa Cheonjon belief is also based on this perspective. Accordingly, the view on the heavenly realm in Mugeuk-do has its roots in Daoism, especially, the view of the Bohwa Cheonjon belief. In this regard, the Ninth Heaven wherein the Shrine of Gods symbolizes, does not signify nine heavens but the highest heaven, which is assumed to consist of the Thirty-six Heavens. Henceforth, the multi-layered heavenly realm of Mugeuk-do is unified by Jeongsan. Such a transformation of the heavenly realm corresponds to the Great Opening of the three realms in the Daesoon belief. This thought can be assured as the belief system in general has undergone changes.

Vol.- No.32

The purpose of this study is to examine how the Later Heaven Eight Trigrams (後天八卦) and the Luo Shu (洛書) were combined within the framework of the Nine Palaces (九宮), and to analyze the numerical principles by which the numbers from one to nine were assigned to each palace. The Later Heaven Eight Trigrams, articulated in the “Shuogua Zhuan (說卦傳)” of the Book of Changes, constitute a system of symbols (象) representing the operative order of all things, while the Luo Shu, recorded in the “Mingtang Pian (明堂篇)” of the Da Dai Liji (大戴禮記), is a magic square (數象) of nine numbers whose rows, columns, and diagonals all sum to fifteen. Although the two diagrams originated from distinct traditions, they were later integrated into a single nine-palace coordinate system. This study first traces how the Luo Shu was established as a magic square upon the Han dynasty foundations of the yin-yang and Five Phases synthesis, calendrical astronomy, and the Mingtang (明堂) cosmology. It then analyzes the threefold numerical balance of the Luo Shu—the constant sum of fifteen, the total sum of forty-five, and the yin-yang ratio of twenty to twenty—and demonstrates that the three-by-three grid is the minimal form in which the Laozi principle of “three begets all things (三生萬物)” achieves its planar completion, with the central palace functioning as the immovable Imperial Pivot (皇極) governing the eight directions. The study then examines the operative positioning of the Later Heaven Eight Trigrams through the eight functional duties—initiation (Zhen 震), uniform regulation (Xun 巽), manifestation (Li 離), consolidation of the harvest (Kun 坤), gathering and joy (Dui 兌), settlement (Qian 乾), storage and conception (Kan 坎), and termination-inception (Gen 艮)—and argues that the deliberate mismatch between the yin-yang of each trigram and that of its position reflects the principle that each trigram is placed where its function can be fulfilled. Finally, taking Zheng Xuan (鄭玄)’s annotation “qǔ qí shù yǐ xíng jiǔ gōng (取其數以行九宮)” on the Yiwei Qianzaodu (易緯乾鑿度) as the decisive node of integration, this study reconstructs the historical trajectory: the Han apocrypha (緯書) formalization, the seasonal application in the Lingshu (靈樞) “Nine Palaces and Eight Winds (九宮八風),” the ritual elevation through Su Jiaqing (蘇嘉慶)’s Nine Palaces Altar (九宮貴神壇) in the Tang, and the doctrinal completion in Zhu Xi (朱熹)’s Hetu Luoshu Tu (河圖洛書圖) in the Song. Building upon this trajectory, the numerical assignment of each palace—Kan-one, Kun-two, Zhen-three, Xun-four, Center-five, Qian-six, Dui-seven, Gen-eight, and Li-nine—is derived step by step through the logic of “matching the numbers of the Luo Shu (合洛書之數)” recorded in the Ming-period Qimen Dunjia Yuanlingjing (奇門遁甲元靈經). The findings confirm that the combined diagram of the Later Heaven Eight Trigrams and the Luo Shu constitutes a structure of the unity of image and number (象數合一), in which symbols acquire coordinates through numbers and numbers acquire meaning through symbols. The diagram occupies a third domain between the numerology of divination and that of practical mathematics, and operates as the cosmological coordinate that mediates the duality of round heaven and square earth The Nine Palaces, therefore, should not be reduced to a mere magic square or divinatory device, but recognized as a core structure of East Asian cosmology and image-number studies.

Vol.41 No.-

This paper is for examining the Other Worlds that Chinese Taoists in middle age described. The World described in Taoist scriptures in middle roughly consists of three realms-Heavens of immortals, Earth of human being and the Underground of the dead. Especially, Taoists endeavored to demonstrate that Heavens of Taoism is superior to those of Buddhism. They suggested many systems of heavens on the basis of the world-view and heavenly systems of Buddhism. There are Three Superior Heavens, Nine Heavens, Thirty-two Heavens and Thirty-six Heavens in the Taoist heavenly system. Especially, in organized Taoism, the notion of thirty-six heavens is on central point to attempt to create a synthesis of different cosmological representations from various Taoist schools. It is influenced by cosmology and soteriology of Buddhism. Besides systems of Heavens, Taoists described fantastic depict of immortal world in this world such as Grotto Heaven. Taoists suggest that dead people of hell underground can be saved from the hell by the merits and prayer of their descendents. The notions of other worlds of Taoism demonstrates the eager for obtaining Tao and salvation which means the escapement from secular world filled with the sins and evil that brings death.

Vol.- No.16

Gyeongbokgung Palace's Geunjeongjeon is regarded as one of the most signicant structures among the palace buildings of the Joseon Dynasty, having been bestowed with various symbols during its reconstruction in the mid-1860s. Particularly noteworthy is the balustrade stone installed on the Woldae(moon terrace), which was rst attempted during this period. e carved representations of the Four Guardian Deities(사신), Twelve Zodiac Animals(十二支神), and the Twenty-Eight Constellations(二十八宿) atop it marks the rst instance not only in Korea but also in East Asia. The carving of these mythical creatures, known as Seosusang(瑞獸像), on the balustrades of Geunjeongjeon Hall is based on astronomy. e Four Guardian Deities, Twelve Zodiac Animals, and the Twenty-Eight Constellations all represent celestial beings mentioned in the Stone Constellation Chart, termed Cheonsangyeolcha bunyajido, an ancient Korean star map. The signicance behind sculpting these mythical creatures can broadly be categorized into two main principles: Wijeong Ideok(爲政以德) and Gyeongcheon Geunmin(敬天勤民). e former metaphorically represents the virtue of a ruler, likening the arrangement of stars, particularly around the North Star, to the governance of virtue. On the other hand, the latter conveys the idea that a ruler should diligently study astronomy for the benet of the people. Ultimately, Wijeong Ideok and Gyeongcheon Geunmin align with the intended meaning of Geunjeongjeon, encouraging a ruler to diligently engage in governance. The embodiment of these symbolic and pictorial representations of mythical creatures on the Woldae (moon terrace) was derived from the astronomical knowledge of the aristocracy at that time and studies of Qing Dynasty documents such as Jinshisu(金石索) depicting animal forms of the Twenty-Eight Constellations. Additionally, the design work of the special supervisors referred to as byeolganyeok, including Kang yoon, the stone quarrying, transportation, and installation eorts led by Kim Jin-seong and other foreman (paejang), and the exceptional craftsmanship of stone masons like Jang Seong-bok all contributed to the completion of the project. e construction of the Woldae (Moon Terrace) of Geunjeongjeon Hall, marking the final phase of the reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung Palace, served as a symbolic representation of the Wangdo Jeongchi(王道政治), or the King’s Way of Governance, through the depiction of mythical creatures. It demonstrated a meaningful understanding that rearmed the essence of Geunjeongjeon’s name.

Vol.69 No.-

The first volume of Cheonmunryucho(天文類抄) contains the information of constellations which was organized into three enclosures and twenty-eight xiu(宿) of four palaces. The system issued from Butiange(步天歌: Song of Pacing Heaven). 3 enclosures & 28 xiu system of Butiange had been leading system in premodern astronomy in East Asia. However, the beginning of Cheonmunrycho introduces five palaces(五宮) system and the center palace is allocated not to the five North Polestars(北極五星) but to the constellation of Xuanyuan(軒轅). Five palaces system is contradictory to the 3 enclosure & 28 xiu system. What was the reason for it?The scholars of Unified Silla invented a story that Huangdi(黃帝) also called Xuanyuan(軒轅) was the common ancestor of Silla and Gaya, so that King Muyeol(武烈王) and Gim Yusin(金庾信) may become the members of a common household. Thereafter Xuanyuan had been the most important constellation in Korean astronomy, and it was transmitted to the book of the 15th century. It was supposed that Xuanyuan was a queen and mother, Samtae(三台) composed of six stars beside Xuanyuan was the placenta of Xuanyuan and the five North Pole stars was a King. Five jars in six hollows of the royal shrine of Unified Silla, and five legs under the six stone boards of Cheomseongdae(瞻星臺) in Gaeseong(開城) represented six stars of Samtae and five North Pole stars. Xuanyuan constellation was considered as the body of yellow dragon, so the Queen boring the father of Wang Geon(王建) who founded the Goryeo dynasty appeared as yellow dragon in the legend on the genealogy of the Goryeo dynasty.

As a work that has the literary historical significance of Japan’s first public Elegy at Mortuary, Manyoshu’s <The Elegy of the Prince Hinamisi> written by Kakinomoto Hitomaro, praises the imperial line based on a mythical worldview in the first half of the long poem, describes the situation caused by the death of the emperor’s son in the later half of the long poem, and mourns the death of the emperor’s son while achieving a poetic structure of recognition of reality over time and lyrical deepening in the short poem. The problem of the interpretation of the exposition throughout the long poem can be solved only if the myth that Hitomaro was aware of is revealed. As such, no matter how you read and interpret the poem, there is no problem understanding the work. However, in the work of Hitomaro, the influence of the traditional poetic style coming from former ages such as Kiki mythology or Norito(a written ritual prayer) can be acknowledged. In this respect, Hitomaro is a traditional poet and a creative poet. <Takaterasu Hinomiko Prince> is not an expression with only one person in mind, Emperor Tenmu or Prince Hinamisi. It is a poetic expression of Hitomaro who identifies those two people. Prince Hinaminsi, like his father Emperor Tenmu, is the prince of the emperor who would crowned as emperor at Asukakiyomihara Palace, would rule the world, and would inherit the Imperial line Genealogy begun by Advent of Heaven’s grandson. Hitomaro, who was fully aware of the minds and perceptions of these court people, adopted the traditional phrase, <Takaterasu Hinomiko Prince> as a poetic expression that was linked Heaven’s grandson, and could be associated with Tenmu and Hinamisi at the same time. Therefore, this double, triplet depiction linking <Hinomoko Prince> to Heaven’s grandson reflects the significance of the mythology of Advent of Heaven’s grandson that all emperors must be inherited ceaselessly as a precious holy beings connected with Heaven’s grandson Niniginomikoto descending from heaven to earth. Hitomaro expressed the hopes and feelings of the imperial court and court people in a concise yet compact way with his excellent poetic talent. The subtle difference between the myths described in Hitomaro’s work and Kiki mythology shows that myths were not organized until that time. The difference was occurred because the knowledge and image of Hitomaro’s myth was literally expressed based on his poetic talent and creativity. In addition, Hitomaro formed this work based on his knowledge of myths that he only knew or on knowledge of myths of other systems, and it seems that such difference occurred as a result. In the sense that Hitomaro’s position of literary history is a poet in the transitional period from oral literature to documentary literature, the myths that Hitomaro recognized were not the same as those of Kiki mythology. In this regard, Hitomaro’s <The Elegy of the Prince Hinamisi> shows not only the aspects of the Elegy at Mortuary, but also what myths were conveyed to court society at that time. It is a work that shows a part of the myth that was alive in the life and faith of the People of Manyoshu’s period.

Vol.0 No.47

I focused on the notation of “Asuka River (飛鳥川)” of ancient capital Nara which is a major expression phrase of Hitomaro song, and tried to explore the cultural history meaning lurking in the notation of the river. Well, as a result of analyzing expression phrases of songs ascribed to “Asuka River ” by Hitomaro, it is known that it is depicted as a sacred spirit that the Emperor spirits are celebrating the Emperor, festivating the god. That is, along the “Asuka River ”, it is confirmed that this “Asuka river ” was depicted as a sacred place where the Taoist culture flowed in along with Baekje’s advanced Buddhism culture bloomed. Well, first attention was paid to the expression of Miyako which is qualified as “clean” in the song phrase surrounding the river. For example, in the Yoshino River song (36th) it is expressed as “Kiyoi Kawachi(Kawauchi)” (a clean river circles around) and therefore singing that it was a sacred place that Takimiya was suitable for building It is said that. Compared to the case where such a phenomenon is the palace of Zhou Mu King of “Liezi” as the city of the Emperor’s Palace, it is as if to say the idea to record the kingdom as a “clean city” It is thought that it is proved to be an idea. Next, there is a song (vol.2·224-5th) that pains himself at the time of his death in the expression of the river of Hitomaro. It is discovered that the song is singing something strange to the expression at the end of the term “lying down on a river with a stone as a pillow.” So, the author of the expression “lying down on a river with a stone pillow” is Cao’s Youxian poem(遊仙詩) “Qiū hú xíng” 「秋胡行」, “rinse with clean water, drink springs and thinking, I tried to rise to heavenly and And eventually it came from the idea that ascending into heaven and trying to become a god”. Especially in the Akahito song of a later era, in the evidence that the trace that imitated Hitomaro song’s phrase was proved clear, in the expression of his “Asuka river ” the notation “Frog(Toad)” Appear. So, paying attention to the Frog(Toad)& turtle living in the river expressed by this song, it is necessary to pay attention to the fact that animals living in river side of the Xi Du Fu “Weishui River (渭水)” are drawn . In other words, it seems that it was a testimony of trying to express that the kingdom is a factional boundary, which caused the Frog(Toad) to appear in the river flowing in Wei. Likewise, the Asuka river’s “frog (Toad)” is also found to be an Anthem by the influence of the poetry with the intention of seeing the Kingdom as a godsend temple. Such an event is diverted from the Taoism thought that “Longevity frog (Toad) grows horn at head and that lifespan becomes 1,000 or 40,000 years if drinking it” in “Bào pǔ zi” ‘xiānyào piān’”. It can be inferred that the Asuka river of Hitomaro song was also a technique of poetic thought that was used in Taisho’s Shinsen thought. In conclusion, it is confirmed that Tanabata’s view of the universe of “Amanokawara(The Royal palace of the Milky Way river(Elegy of Prince Hinamishi(vol.2·167th & vol.10·1997, 2003th)” is drawn in the notation of the song “Asuka River ” by Hitomaro. This is exactly like the Royal Imperial Palace built in the river side of Weishui (渭水)flowing in Xī dū which Ran-chi Palace(蘭池宮) is built on the river that flows in a belt-like shape, the Kingdom flourishes like “Eternal longevity” and “The world of eternal ideals” It is inferred that the view of the sacred place of the temple, which he wished to pray for, was projected as the lyrics of this “Asuka River ” song.

Vol.69 No.-

This thesis aims to examine the shape and narrative meaning of the ‘good horse’ in 51 Korean classical novels. The ‘good horse’ can be divided into three shapes according to its affiliation: First, he belongs to the heavenly world and is under the heavenly beings; second, he belongs to the world of water palace and is under the dragon; third, he is a being who entrusts himself to an ordinary person for a while belonging to nowhere. The good horse cannot transform into a human or express his opinions in human language, even though he has fast racing speed and and excellent combat power. He simply appear to be just a tool and a functional animal to help the protagonist achieve. Therefore, after completing his role, the good horse disappears without a trace in the narrative and receives no praise, recognition, or appropriate compensation for his achievement. In addition, the protagonist talks as if he treats the good horse as an equal to a human, but in fact, he has a dual thought that he perceives himself as superior. That is why the protagonist and the good horse cannot share true emotional communication. In this respect, the good horse can be said to be a good monster character created only to make humans stand out, based on strong human-centered thinking.
