Pyohun(表訓) is a notable eminent monk in the Buddhist history of mid Silla. However, it is not easy to identify his whole life systematically because data about him are fragmentary. Moreover, data relating to whole life of Pyohun appears scattered over nearly 100 years from 676, the 16 years of munmuwang(文武王) when Uisang(義相) had built Buseoksa(浮石寺) and started to concentrate on his missionary work, until the reign of Kyongdokwang(景德王). Even, the claim that pyohun is not immediate disciples of Uisang was emerged due to this problems. Is really not Pyohun an immediate disciple of Uisang? To answer this question, This paper tried to investigate his status in the Buddhist history of mid Silla, by not only inquiring into the relationship between pyohun and Uisang, but also thoroughly examining for the survival times and the important activities of pyohun. Pyohun is one of the ten disciples who were directly taught from Uisang. This fact is identified by the dialogues between pyohun and Uisang, written on 『Daegi(大期)』 and 『Gogi(古記)』. However, the time when the most remarkable activities of pyohun revealed was eight mid century(742~764, the reign of gyeongdeokwang. He had met Daejeong(大正) at Hwangboksa(皇福寺) in nearly 750, had met gyeongdeokwang around 757 and lectured Hwaeom(華嚴) at Hwangboksa in 760. Considering that Pyohun was taught from Uisang, his age in the reign of Kyongdokwang might be seventy or eighty years old. Assuming Pyohun was twenty years old in 702 when Uisang passed away, the time he lectured at Hwangboksa was the age of 78. Perhaps pyohun seemed to have a long life. Pyohun had actively consulted when Kim Dae seong(金大城) built Bulguksa(佛國寺). And he pointed out to gyeongdeokwang who was eager to have a son and hand over the throne to him that the country might fall into chaos. He got respected as the last saint of Silla. Pyohun included as one of the ten saint of the main building in heungryunsa(興輪寺) because of his high position in Buddhist history of mid Silla.
Vol.46 No.-
This study set out to investigate the dedicatory prayers text written in 1617 and the manuscript sutra written on white paper in 1388 among the “relics inside the Terracotta Bodhisattva Statue of Gapsa Temple” in Gongju. The manuscript sutra written on white paper is the first example of “Yukgyeonghapbu(six sutras)” format, and its dedicatory prayers text by Pyohun Daeduk holds important significance as the first discovery of writing by prominent monks during the Silla Dynasty. The investigator examined Uisang’s “Ilseoungbeopgye-do(Beopseonggye)” and Pyohun’s “Pyohun Daeduk’s dedicatory prayers text” in the manuscript sutra written on white paper and pointed out a few problems with the interpretation of the former and inferring Pyohun’s ideological origin in his dedicatory prayers text from the analysis and review of the latter. The findings show that Pyohun’s “Pyohun Daeduk’s dedicatory prayers text” was, in terms of formal structure, based on two axes that included ⑴ prayers, birth on lotus and ⑵ prayers, re-birth and going forward to Bodhisattva Path. In terms of content, the text contained Pyohun’s views and acceptance of Yogācāra ideology as a Yogācāra Ācārya; his acceptance pattern of Pure Land Ideology, which he must have acquired in his relationships with Euijeok, one of Uisang’s ten major pupils and his colleagues; his spirit of merit transference, which he seemed to have accepted as a member of Uisang’s Avatamska sect; and the great wish of “Lotus Sutra.”
Vol.0 No.70
In the middle of the eighth century, the Uisang school, which had been based at and around the remote Buseok-sa temple and concentrated on individual practices, moved to the capital and became one of the influential streams of Shilla Buddhism. The central figure of this was Pyohun, who lived at the Hwangbok-sa temple in the capital and tried to preach his master Uisang Huayan’s thought to people other than his original disciples. Pyohun suggested the one vehicle world theory consisted of the five ocean seal[s?garamudr?] Samadhis, five understandings (of the real world), and five Buddha lands. This was a systematic expatiation on Uisang’s Huayan thought, especially his theory of the practitioner’s realization of ocean seal Samadhi, and it must have helped the monks and common people to understand Uisang’s thought. Kim Dae-seong, who had learned Huayan thought from Pyohun, built Bulguk-sa temple and Seokkuram cave in Toham mountain and offered them to Pyohun and other disciples of Uisang as their bases in the capital. The unprecedented style of these temples reflects Pyohun’s one vehicle world theory. The five Samadhi, understanding, and Buddha lands of the theory are divided into Buddha’s sphere and Puxian[Samantabhadra] Bodhisattva. The Seokkuram cave and the Bulguk-sa temple are the materialization of the Buddha’s and Puxian Bodhisattva’s spheres respectively. The main Buddha of the Seokkuram cave is the materialization of the three innermost out of the five ocean seal samadhis, and the Bulguk-sa temple is the realization of the Lotus Treasury world, the outmost of the five Buddha lands. According to Pyohun’s theory, Kim Dae-seong seems to have wanted to realize the one vehicle world in Toham mountain. The political and social backgrounds of his project will be investigated in depth.

This study examines the relationship between Buddhism and folk beliefs focusing on the tales of Samgukyusa. Through the stories of <Hwangryongsa Gucheungtap>, <Cheoyongrang Manghaesa>, <Dohwanyeo Bihyeongrang>, and <Gyeongdeokwang Chungdamsa Pyohoon Daedeok>, the author presents how this relationships changes. In <Hwangryongsa Gucheungtap>, a nine-storied pagoda is completed through the efforts of General Lee Jeok, by which the Three Kingdoms are unified. This suggests that the coexistence of Buddhism and folk beliefs is necessary for stability in reality. In <Cheoyongrang Manghaesa>, a dragon king wants to build a pagoda with a Buddhist figure, and as one of the figures in folk beliefs, Cheoyongrang meets the goddess of smallpox. Here, the two worlds of Buddhism and folk beliefs coexist equally as Manghaesa Temple was built and a picture of Cheoyong was present as a charm. In <Dohwanyeo Bihyeongrang>, the world of Buddhism cannot be found specifically, but figures like Biyeongrang or Gildal are obviously those from folk beliefs. This compels Gildal to be put into reality, but Gildal refuses, while Biyeongrang, who has already been incorporated into the real world, kills Gildal as a way to cut off the incorporation of folk beliefs into the real world. This disconnection is more clearly revealed in <Gyeongdeokwang Chungdamsa Pyohoon Daedeok>. In this work, the Buddhist figure Chungdamsa composes <Anminga> under the order of King Gyeongdeok, and this is shown as subordination into the real world that is centered on the state and the royal authority, not Buddhism. Pyohoon Daedeok eventually has a role to disconnect heaven from the human world even though he has the ability to handle both Buddhist and folk beliefs. He belongs to Buddhism, but he is completely subjected to the real world. This aspect of Buddhism and folk beliefs shows the pattern and the flow that the two worlds coexisted, but Buddhism became the center of the real world by gradually encompassing folk beliefs. As above, the four stories contained in Samgukyusa show the coexistence and separation of Buddhism and folk beliefs. From this, we can see that Buddhism has already been accepted in the real world and has become the center, while folk beliefs are distant from the real world. Therefore, it is the real world that has had the greatest influence on the encounter and separation of Buddhism and folk beliefs. The status of Buddhism, having become the mainstream and order of the real world, is different from that of folk beliefs that are relatively alienated from the mainstream. In summary, the separation is the result of the two worlds whose relationship with the real world has changed. Buddhism that came from the West becomes the leading ideology of the state while actively intervening in solving problems in reality and eventually forms the order of reality. Although folk beliefs have not become the mainstream, they encounter and are separated from Buddhism according to the needs in each moment. The process of establishing Buddhism firmly required the world of folk beliefs, and the two worlds cooperated to build either towers or temples. The figures that exist as the symbols of this cooperation are Cheoyong, Biyeongrang, and Gildal.
Vol.39 No.-
According to the Chapter Kiyi of Samkukyusa, King Gyeongdeok had a mutual exchange of opinions with lots of monks. Among them, monk Chungdam wrote Song Anmin for King Gyeongdeok and monk Pyohun helped King Gyeongdeok born a prince by praying to the god. Monk Il-yeon thought they had a personal relationship, so he named ‘King Gyeongdeok, monk Chungdam and Pyohun’ at the Chapter Kiyi of Samkukyusa. The Song Anmin has a lot of content analysis, but historical analysis is not enough. According to lyrics, people are required to perform their own duty. It’s a sign of the times. Daesung Kim introduced monk Pyohun to King Gyeongdeok. Pyohun met the Great Jade Emperor to ask him whether the king could have a prince. The Great Jade Emperor said no, but monk Pyohun helped the king to have a prince. Because he disobeyed an order, monk Pyohun couldn’t meet The Great Jade Emperor ever. This was an effort to overcome political problems linked to the royal male heir. King Gyeondeok, monk Chungdam and Pyohun are closely connected. Of course, we don’t know how monk Chungdam and Pyohun are related, however, we could guess they are a loyal subject. This is the reason why Monk Il-yeon titled this way at the Chapter Kiyi of Samkukyusa.

The Bulguksa Temple is one of the most famous temples in Korea. It is the le ading cultural heritage representing the history and tradition of Silla, and further more, the culture of the Korean people, keeping the essence of the brilliant Silla Buddhist culture. It should not be forgotten that this status of Bulguksa Temple i s the result of harmonizing internal performance and education along with the rec onstruction of an external pavilion. The history and culture of the temple are created by the efforts of the saṅgha’ s who constantly devotes himself through the foresight and practice of daily life. In this sense, this article focuses on Bulguksa Temple as a practice space. The p ractice of teaching takes place in Gangwon. In other words, Gangwon is a repres entative place for saṅgha education. This official name "Gangwon" has been confi rmed for the first time so far, with Bulguksa records at the end of the 9th centur y. The meaning of the beginning is very significant. This is because it means th at Bulguksa Temple has a long tradition of teaching. Gangwon education of modern Bulguksa Temple has been confirmed since 1913. In 1960, Gangwon education covering pedestrians and sāmaṇera was conducted, a nd many practitioners flocked. In 1975, it was reopened as Bulguksa Saṅgha Univ ersity in 1975 according to the origin of Zen master Wolsan, who emphasized the importance of fostering apprentices. After that, it was reorganized into Saṅgha Un iversity according to the educational system of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhi sm, starting with the first graduate in 1976, it produced hundreds of young saṅgh a’s 45 times until 2020. At the center of this tradition were Gangju and the instructor. The tradition of asking for learning in search of an outstanding saṅgha is no different from teaching, so many people visited Bulguksa Temple Gangwon in search of a good instru ctor. Master Pyohoon, Yuga of Unified Silla, Master Seolwoo in 1913, as the curr ent saṅgha graduate school president, Master Deokmin, the tradition of education Bulguksa Temple has been steadily inherited.

In the Silla kingdom, there were two types of images depicting Vairocana Buddha in Bodhaśrī-mudrā’ known as ‘tathāgata type’ and ‘crowned type’. In both types, Vairocana Buddha holds his hands in the Bodhaśrī-mudrā’ (fist of wisdom) pose. The distinction is a matter of majestic ornamentation. While tathāgata images are absent of decoration, the crowned Vairocana Buddha is always represented with a crown above the Buddha’s head. The Vairocana Buddha portrayed in the 755 illustrated manuscript, Silla Illustration of the Avatamsaka Sutra, is of the crowned type. The stone statue of seated Vairocana Buddha from Seongnamamsaji Temple site, created little more than a decade later in 766, is of the tathāgata type. Although both examples were made during the mid-eighth century and based on the 80-volume Avatamsaka Sutra, the two images present unmistakably different iconography. This paper seeks to explain why images of the same figure, created almost simultaneously and constructed from a single sutra, show contrasting iconographies. During the mid-eighth century, the Huayan School of Buddhism in the royal capital of Silla was largely divided into either the monk Yeongi (active mid-eighth century) lineage or the monk Pyohun (active mid-eighth century) lineage. The leader of the former group, the monk Yeongi based his activities in the Hwaeomsa and Hwangnyongsa Temples. The leader of the latter group, the monk Pyohun worked at the Hwangboksa and Bulguksa Temples. Through this paper, I purport that the Yeongi lineage created the crowned type image of Vairocana Buddha, while the Pyohun lineage was responsible for developing the tathāgata type. Yeongi, who was influenced by the Chinese monk Fazang (643-712), exactly reproduced the ‘Crowned Vairocana Buddha in Bodhaśrī-mudrā’ from the Middle Esoteric Buddhism iconograhpic interpretation of Mahāvairocana (Great Buddha Vairochana). The resulting image is preserved in the Silla Illustration of the Avatamsaka Sutra created in 755 by Yeongi for the Hwangnyongsa Temple. On the other hand, the head monk Uisang (625- 702) of the Pyohun lineage believed the Avatamsaka Sutra to be an absolute and complete teaching, and immersed himself in the sutra with an emphasis on applied practices. Among Uisang’s followers, Pyohun in particular made his way to the royal capital where he established his position as a preeminent monk after the mid-eighth century. Pyohun and other disciples of Uisang commissioned a stone statue of Vairocana Buddha, the central figure of the Avatamsaka Sutra. However, they did not follow the precedent for recreating the representation of the Mahāvairocana in the tradition of Middle Esoteric Buddhism. Instead, Pyohun and his fellow monks developed a new iconography that focused solely on the Bodhaśrī-mudrā, which they considered the defining aspect of Vairocana Buddha. Aligned with the core philosophy of the Pyohun lineage, Pyohun conceived the ‘Tathāgata type Vairocana Buddha in Bodhaśrī-mudrā’ as a physical symbol of the belief that the Avatamsaka Sutra is the culmination of teachings from all sutras. Thus, the stone statue of seated Vairocana Buddha from the Seongnamamsaji Temple site was the manifestation of a newly established iconography. In all likelihood, the ‘Tathāgata type Vairocana Buddha in Bodhaśrī-mudrā’ originates from Korea. This particular type of Vairocana Buddha image was already being created and enshrined in the royal capital before the stone statue of seated Vairocana Buddha from the Seongnamamsaji Temple site was made in 766. This paper asserts that the monk Pyohun who was a central figure in the royal capital at the time, was the individual responsible for developing a new iconography. His efforts are symbolized in the image of ‘Tathāgata type Vairocana Buddha in Bodhaśrī-mudrā’ that we see today.

Seokkuram(Seokkuram石窟庵), located on the eastern summit of Mt. Toham near Gyeongju, is a Buddhist shrine in the form of a stone grotto, absolutely unique in East Asian history. The author, viewing Seokkuram not as human-centered but rather a spiritual space, analyzes its uniqueness in light of the fundamental principles of who, what, where, why, when, and how. Methodologically, the paper reinterprets the oldest surviving document concerning Seokkuram found in the Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) from a fresh perspective, and thereby seeks to adduce a new paradigm for research on Seokkuram. Concerning the establishment of Seokkuram, the factual basis of some of the basic questions have already been adequately answered: “who”?Prime Minister Kim Daeseong; “when” the mid-8th century; “where”?in Gyeongju on the eastern summit of Mt. Toham. The first chapter surveys the results of past scholarship, supplementing them in places with the author`s personal views. Continuing with a discussion of the question of “why”, the author analyzes in depth the phrase: “... construct [this] stone Buddhist shrine for [my]departed parents of [a] former generation.” That is, the author notes that the conceptual basis underlying the establishment of Seokkuram incorporated a union of a concern for public good (功德思想) blended with that of filial piety (孝). While such a union had a precedent in Indian Buddhism, the author points out that it was further strengthened within Chinese Buddhism. Accordingly it may be understood as part of the Chinese adaptation of Buddhism. This work places greatest emphasis on Chapter 2, in which the issue of “what was this entity we know as Seokkuram?” is addressed. In fact, the name of Seokkuram (石窟庵) and its prior version, Seokpulsa (Seokpulsa石佛寺), are merely superficial appellations, but up to the present there has been almost no discussion of their true nature or character. The author accords strong significance to a reference to “heavenly palace” (天宮) found in adocument on Buddhist religious teachings, deriving from the first chief monk of Seokpulsa, and sets forth his view that Seokkuram was created by Kim Daeseong as a spiritual space, more specifically as a heavenly palace in which dwelled Indra, ruler of the Trayastrimsa, or Thirty-three Heavens. Last, Chapter 3 concerns itself with ‘how’. Using “heavenly palace” as a central conceptual paradigm, the paper examines the special features of Seokkuram: its location on a mountaintop over a sacred spring, its orientation, its use of stones, and the rotunda of the domed roof. Using these features?which prior scholarship either did not notice, misunderstood, or discussed only partially?a reinterpretation is provided and thereby, at last, it may be said that Seokkuram in its original form is recovered, as created by Kim Daeseong to be in full accord with the countenance of a heavenly palace.
