Vol.3 No.0

Uzbekistan is one of the most favorable countries towards South Korea, and Korean is the second most commonly taught foreign language after English. The country also ranks third in terms of the number of international students enrolled in higher education in Korea, after China and Vietnam, indicating a high level of interest in Korea and the Korean language. However, the development of Korean studies in Uzbekistan has been much slower than in Russia because Korean studies were concentrated in Russia during the SSSR, and Korean language education at universities only began in the 1990s. In Uzbekistan, Korean studies began to produce researchers in the late 2000s, but most of them are Korean language majors, which is most likely due to the fact that most of the Korean studies-related departments at local universities are Korean philologies. In addition to this concentration of researchers, there are various challenges to the development of Korean studies, such as the division of researchers into Uzbek and Russian language researchers, difficulties in communicating research due to the difficulty in sharing Korean studies, and difficulties in conducting research due to economic conditions. On the other hand, in order to foster Korean studies experts in Uzbekistan, the University of Oriiental Studies has established majors in Korean history, Korean economy, and Korean politics in addition to Korean philology, and the number of Korean studies majors is gradually increasing in graduate school. However, due to the university's policy, students majoring in Korean studies are required to take more Korean language classes than majors, which is insufficient for them to acquire enough knowledge to become Korean studies experts. The expansion of Korean language education in Uzbekistan has been driven by the popularity of the language, but it has also been aided by material and financial support from Korean organizations and universities. However, it is now time to help Korean studies in Uzbekistan gradually become more self-sustaining, with less direct material and financial support and more support for retraining Korean studies instructors and improving the research environment.

Vol.2 No.0

This study examines the growth of Korean studies in Latin America and addresses the challenges to ensuring its sustainability in the future. Despite geographical and cultural differences, Latin America has analyzed Korea as a unique model of sui generis modernity from a comparative perspective, given their shared experiences as peripheral regions of the world. Since then, Korean studies have expanded from economic and political analyses to encompass linguistic, literary, and cultural studies, catalyzed by the global phenomenon of the Korean Wave. This evolution has created an academic prism that reflects the region’s diverse identities and interests. The study argues that Korean studies in Latin America, now gaining both popular and academic recognition, should be institutionalized, solidified, and made self-sustaining to foster a lasting connection between Asia and Latin America.

Vol.2 No.0

The globalization of Korean studies is closely related to the spread of the Korean Wave. The task of the globalization of Korean studies can be said to be the research goal of many researchers. Records produced during the Donghak Peasant Revolution were registered as a Memory of the World at the 216th UNESCO Executive Board meeting held in Paris, France on May 18. As a result, the Donghak Peasant Revolution was recognized around the world as a great revolution brought about by the grassroots to overthrow the oppressive monarchical system and create a world in Inaecheon where people are treated like human beings. We have become a country with 18 Memory of the World Heritage sites. The Memory of the World is a project in which UNESCO determines the importance of historical events that occurred around the world and selects and certifies the records produced at the time to share the value of the records with all mankind and to preserve them and pass them on to future generations. The Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Foundation has been promoting the listing of the Donghak Peasant Revolution as a UNESCO Memory of the World since 2015. Although there were many difficulties, registration was finally completed in 2023. As a result, the Donghak Peasant Revolution of 1894 was given legitimacy as an event in which the people rose up to resist the corrupt leadership, oppose foreign invasion, and build an equal and fair society. Meanwhile, the Donghak Peasant Revolution can be seen as acknowledging the modern universal values of human rights and equality, opposition to colonialism, and the pursuit of democracy, transcending time and place. The remaining task now is to re-verify the parts that were problematic in the registration process along with the records that will be added in the future. Research should be resumed on whether it was the Donghak Revolution or the Donghak Movement, how far the influence of Donghyeong Daejeon and Yongdam Yusa should be seen on the actions of the Donghak army in 1894, the controversy over the authenticity of Sabaltongmun, and the relationship between the Donghak Revolution and the March 1st Revolution.

Vol.1 No.0

This study examines the current status of Korean studies in Thailand, focusing on Korean language education and Korean studies as a regional discipline, as well as the activities of major Korean studies-related research institutes. It aims to explore the current situation of Korean studies in Thailand and anticipate future challenges. Korean studies in Thailand has passed through stages of growth due to the spread of Korean language education and now emphasizes the dissemination of content education based on language. Korean language education in Thailand has steadily progressed through the efforts of both the Thai and Korean governments, especially with recent noticeable growth in secondary education. However, the task is to cultivate people of talents with enhanced Korean language proficiency and more profound knowledge of Korean studies from the perspective of educational sustainability. Furthermore, three universities in Thailand offer specialized and advanced Korean studies programs, and various efforts are being made to advance Korean studies through seven institutes. However, further development is still needed due to the lack of specialist and infrastructure familiar with Korean studies.. Therefore, this research suggests future tasks for developing Korean studies in Thailand, including strengthening cooperation among relevant agencies, nurturing close experts, developing and supporting Korean studies curricula, and enhancing accessibility to Korean studies materials.

Vol.4 No.0

The National Library of Korea (hereinafter referred to as the NLK) has an album of Zhao Mengfu Modelbook Calligraphy in its collection featuring rubbings of engravings. Not found in Taiwan, China, or Japan, it is suspected to be a sole-surviving copy “second only to the original.” Previously, Seok Guseong had been the first to propose that the five rubbings in the Zhao Mengfu Modelbook Calligraphy album, including the “Copy of the Dingwu Version of the Lanting Preface,” were printed in Korea, a claim that remains to be confirmed. In pursuing this matter further, the present study first reviews the spread and influence of Zhao Mengfu’s (1254-1322) calligraphy on the Korean Peninsula and then examines the transmission, content, authenticity, and dating of Zhao Mengfu Modelbook Calligraphy. It finds that the original works behind the five rubbings in this album in the NLK collection have all been lost, with two of them appearing to have been genuine and the three others forgeries. The “Copy of the Dingwu Version of the Lanting Preface” and “Ode on Heavy Rain” are of fine quality and presumed to have been transmitted to the Korean Peninsula during the late Goryeo period (918-1392). The other three (“The Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment,” “The Great Plan,” and “Eighteen Colophons to the Lanting Preface”) are products from later in the Joseon dynasty (1392-1897), their contents also incomplete and the line position of the text altered, making them difficult to identify. Comparison with other extant versions helps to slightly clarify their original appearance. Overall, the five engraved rubbings are nonetheless excellent examples representing various aspects of Zhao Mengfu’s calligraphy, either being “second only to the original” or attributable to him. Unique in many ways, they are of great significance to the study of Zhao Mengfu’s life, his writings, religious beliefs, and calligraphy, as well as research on the history of Sino-Korean art and cultural exchange, thereby deserving further attention and examination.
