The aims of the research program was to study the fermentation kinetics of strains of the ethanol producing microorganism Zymomonas mobilis and to develop high productivity continuous fermentation systems. Kinetic studies on glucose, fructose and sucrose media revealed that Z. mobilis had high specific rates of sugar uptake and ethanol production resulting in rapid conversion of high concentrations of sugars to ethanol. Moreover, the high ethanol and low biomass yields with Z. mobilis culture indicated a high efficiency for ethanol production. The specific growth rate of strains of Z. mobilis appeared to be influenced significantly by environmental and nutritional conditions e.g. temperature, high concentrations of ethanol and sugars, while the specific ethanol production rates were not largely affected. The uncoupling between growth and ethanol production which occurred at higher temperatures and ethanol concentrations was considered and advantage for high productivity ethanol fermentation as it gave rise to higher ethanol yields and minimal biomass production. Quantitative evidence for the effect of ethanol on the overall $quot;maintenance energy requirements$quot; was clearly demonstrated and it was proposed that at higher ethanol levels, an appreciable proportion of glucose uptake was involved in uncoupled metabolism. From the kinetic studies and comparison with various yeast fermentation systems it was clear that Z. mobilis offered an attractive alternatives a suitable organism for high productivity ethanol fermentations.
한자어 접미사의 생산성에 대한 소고 - ‘-당(當), -별(別), -식(式), -용(用)’을 중심으로 -

한국어에는 통사론적 구성에 참여하는 접미사가 있는데 만약 이들이 접미사라면 형태론적 구성을 이루어야 함에도 불구하고 통사론적 구성을 이루게 되어 그 문법적 지위가 의심되는 경우가 있다. 이럴 경우 분포나 의미가 걸치는 영역을 통해서 그 범주를 판단할 수도 있겠으나 형태론적 구성의 생산성과 통사론적 구성의 생산성에 근본적인 차이에 기인하여 이들을 판별해 볼 수 있다. 이 논의에서는 한자어 접미사 ‘-당(當), -별(別), -식(式), -용(用)’의 생산성을 실측하여 이들의 형태론적 구성에 참여하는지 통사론적 구성에 참여하는지를 살펴보았는데, 대체로 이들이 통사론적 구성에 참여하는 요소라는 것을 밝혔다. 그 결과로 생산성의 실측이 접미사의 판별에 도움이 될 수 있으므로, 접미사 판별에 생산성이 이론이 아닌 실제적 수치로 실측되어야 한다는 것을 주장한다. There are suffixes in the Korean language that participate in the syntactic composition, if they are suffixes, and even though they have to form a morphological composition, there are cases in which the grammatical status is suspected. In this case, the distribution or meaningful areas may be used to determine the category, but they can be determined by fundamental differences in the productivity of the morphological composition and the productivity of the syntactic composition. The discussion examined the productivity of the Chinese character suffix ‘-당(dang), -별(byeol), -식(sik), -용(yong)' to see if they participated in morphological composition or syntactic composition, which in general revealed that they were involved in a syntactic composition. As a result, it is argued that productivity should be realised in the suffix's determination, not in theory, because the actual side of productivity may help determine the suffix.

The purpose of this study is to propose a new affix(preffix, suffix) selection methodology for derivative training. It is a preliminary discussion for selecting the affixes of derivative training for vocabulary expansion of Korean learners. In this discussion, 5 million corpus callsfor five resisters were used to analyze all 530 affixes. Then, the frequency of the affix was calculated, the number of derivative types produced by the affix, and the pattern of use by resister of use of the affix were presented. As a result, it was argued that the frequency of use of affixes, the number of derivative types, and that the affixes used in various resister should be selected as educational affixes. As a result, based on the analysis results of corpus, such as those established in this discussion, it is expected that each teacher or textbook writer will be able to select and use the important affixes for vocabulary education. 이 연구는 파생어 교육을 위한 새로운 접사 선정 방법론을 제안하는 것으로한국어 학습자의 어휘 확장을 위한 파생어 교육의 접사 선정을 위한 예비적 논의이다. 그간의 연구는 교재에서 제시된 파생어를 분석하거나 기구축 어휘 목록등을 이용한 파생 접사 선정을 통해서 이를 통한 한국어 단어 형성법 교육이필요하다는 주장들이 이어져 왔다. 하지만 한국어 단어 형성의 양상을 제대로포착하여 학습자들에게 실제 도움을 줄 수 있는 접사 선정은 접사의 사용 양상을 확인하기 위한 기초 자료 구축에서부터 고심할 필요가 있다. 이 논의에서는5개 영역의 500만 말뭉치를 이용하여 표준국어대사전에 접사로 등재된 530여개의 접사를 모두 분석하는 방식을 취하였다. 그런 다음 접사 빈도 산출, 해당접사로 생산된 파생어 유형 수, 접사의 사용역별 사용 양상 등을 제시하였다. 그 결과 접사의 사용 빈도가 높고, 파생어 유형 수도 많으며, 다양한 사용역에서 사용되는 접사를 교육용 접사로 선정할 것을 주장하였다. 최종적으로 이 논의에서 구축한 것과 같은 기초 자료의 분석 결과를 토대로, 교수자나 교재 집필자들마다 중요하다고 생각하는 접사를 선정하여 한국어 어휘 교육에 활용할 수있을 것이다.
FAD-independent and Herbicide-resistant Mutants of Tobacco Acetohydroxy Acid Synthase

Acetohydroxy acid synthase catalyzes the first common step in the biosynthesis of branched chain amino acids. AHAS plays two distinct metabolic roles, and is designated as anabolic AHAS and catabolic AHAS, depending on its function. Anabolic AHAS is FAD-dependent, while its catabolic counterpart is not. In this work, a conserved motif was identified in the -domain of anabolic AHASs, but not in catabolic AHAS (372RFDDR376). In order to determine the functions of this motif, we replaced the motif with the corresponding sequence in FAD-independent AHAS, SPVEY. None of these three mutants (SPV, SPVE, and SPVEY) was detected with bound FAD. However, two of these mutants (SPVE and SPVEY) were active at a low level of specific activity. Although they exhibited pyruvate- and ThDP- dependent characteristics, the activity of the two active mutants appears to be FAD-independent. The SPVEY mutant was completely insensitive to the three tested herbicides, even at extremely high concentrations and is also somewhat more thermolabile than the wild type enzyme. The data provided in this work suggest that the RFDDR motif is a possible determinant of the FAD-dependent and herbicide-resistant properties of tobacco AHAS. The SPVEY mutant appears to exhibit catabolic AHAS-like activity.
