In order to investigate the effects of Kaejibokryungwhan, Sobokchugeotang and Dohongsamultang on mesangial cell proliferation and fibronectin synthesis, laboratory study was performed. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Mesangial cell proliferation was significantly decreased in the Kaejibokryungwhan group and the Dohongsamultang group compared with the Control group. In the Sobokchugeotang group, the mesangia1 cell proliferation activity was lesser than Control group, but it was statistically non-significant. In Kaejibokryungwhan group, the Sobokchugeotang group and Dohongsamultang group, mesangial cell proliferation was significantly decreased compared with the Hydrocortisone group 2. In the group, which contained fetal bovine serum, fibronectin synthesis was decreased in the Kaejibokryungwhan group, the Sobokchugeotang group and Dohongsamultang group compared with Control group, but the difference was statistically non-significant. In Kaejibokryungwhan group, Sobokchugeotang group and Dohongsamultang group, fibronectin was less decreased compared with that of Hydrocortisone group. 3. In the group, which contained fetal bovine serum, fibronectin synthesis was significantly decreased in Kaejibokryungwhan group and Sobokchugeotang group than those of Control group. In Dohongsamultang group, the fibronectin synthesis was decreased than Control group, but the difference was statistically non-significant. In Sobokchugeotang group, the fibronectin synthesis was decreased than Hydrocortisone group, but it was statistically non-significant. According to the above results, the mesangial cell proliferation and fibronectin systhesis could be reduced by Kaejibokryungwhan group significantly.
울금약침(鬱金藥針)이 백서(白鼠)의 간손상(肝損傷) 회복(恢復)에 미치는 영향(影響)

These studies were carried out to observe the effect of Aqua-acupuncture with Woolgum extract on the recovery from liver injury of rats. The liver injury of rats induced with 0.5ml/200g carbon tetrachloride. The Aqua-acupuncture with Woolgum extract solution inserted into corresponding locus of the Kansu(BL18.) in Rats. Experimental group was divided into 4 groups: Normal group, $CCI_4$-intoxicated group, Saline treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated and Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. Biochemical assays for each serum enzyme activity of GOT, GPT, LDH, total protein, triglyceride, albumin, WBC, neutrophils, lymphocyte were performed. The results were as follows : 1. GOT was decreased with statistical significance in the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. In GOT activity, the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated showed higher level significant compared with the saline aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. 2. GPT was decreased with statistical significance in the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. In GOT activity, the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated showed higher level significant compared with the saline aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. 3. LDH was decreased with statistical significance in the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. 4. Total protein increased with statistical significance in the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. 5. Albumin was increased with statistical significance in the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. The saline aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated was not recognized as compared with $CCI_4$-intoxicated group. 6. Triglyceride was increased with statistical significance in the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. 7. WBC was decreased with statistical significance in the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. In WBC count, the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture higher level significant compared with the saline aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. 8. Lymphocyte was decreased with statistical significance in the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. 9. Neutrophils was increased with statistical significance in the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated. The saline aqua-acupuncture treated group after $CCI_4$-intoxicated was not recognized as compared with $CCI_4$-intoxicated group. From above results, it is suggested that the Woolgum aqua-acupuncture had significant effects on the injury induced by $CCI_4$.
소아 수면무호흡증 환아와 정상 소아에서 수면구조와 뇌파 양상 차이

Introduction: In this study, we compared sleep structure, EEG characteristic of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and normal controls which were matched in sex and age. Methods: Fifteen children (male:female=4:11) who complained snoring and were suspected to have sleep apnea and their age and sex matched normal controls (male:female=5:10) have been done nocturnal polysomnography (NPSG). Sleep parameters, sleep apnea variables and relative spectral components of EEG from NPSG have been compared between both groups. Results: Pediatric OSA group were distinguished from normal controls in terms of apnea index, respiratory disturbance index and nadir of oxyhemoglobulin desaturation. Pediatric OSA group showed increased percent of sleep stage 1, decreased rapid eye movement sleep percent and increased delta power in O1 EEG channel. However other sleep parameters and spectral powers were not different between two groups. Conclusion: In pediatric OSA group, sleep structure parameter disruption may be not prominent as the previous studies for adult OSA group because of including mild OSA data in diagnostic criteria. In addition, EEG changes might not be distinct due to low arousal index compared to adult OSA patients. We can observe general characteristics and particularity of pediatric OSA through this study.
실시간 영상 감시를 위한 웹 카메라 시스템의 구현에 관한 연구

In this study, the architecture of the Web Camera System for realtime monitoring on Internet is proposed and implemented in two different structures. In the one architecture, a Web-server and a Camera-server are implemented on the same system, and the system transfers motion pictures compressed to JPEG file to users on the WWW(World Wide Web). In the other architecture, the Web-server and the Camera-server are implemented on different systems, and the motion pictures are transferred from the Camera-server to the Web-server, and finally to users. For JPEG image transferring in the Web Camera system, the Java Applet and the Java Script are used to maximize flexibility of the system from the Operating system and the Web browsers. In order to compare system performance between two architectures, data traffic is measured and simulated in the unit of byte per second.

Objectives : The aim of this study was to verify anti-cancer and anti-oxidant efficacies of Korean wild ginseng and cultivated wild ginseng of Korea and China. Methods : For the measurement of anti-oxidation, SOD-like activity was evaluated using xanthine oxidase reduction method under in vitro environment. Subcutaneous and abdominal cancer were induced using CT-26 human colon cancer cells for the measurement of growth inhibition of cancer cells and differences in survival rate. Results : 1. Measurement of anti-oxidant activity of ginseng, Chinese and Korean cultivated wild ginseng, and natural wild ginseng samples showed concentration dependent anti-oxidant activity in HX/XOD system. Anti-oxidant activity showed drastic increase at 1mg/ml in all samples. 2. For the evaluation of growth inhibition of cancer cells after hypodermic implantation of CT-26 cancer cells in the peritoneal cavity of mice, Chinese and Korean cultivated wild ginseng and natural wild ginseng groups showed significant inhibition of tumor growth from the 12th day compared to the control group. Similar inhibitory effects were also shown on the 15th and 18th days. But there was no significant difference between the experiment groups. 3. For the observation of increase in survival rate of the natural wild ginseng group, CT-26 cancer cells were implanted in the peritoneal cavity of mice.

This paper aimed to investigate the perceptions on the qualities of English teachers and the differences in their perceptions. A close investigation of teachers`` perceptions on the qualities entails clear implications for improvement of the field. For this study, 84 native and nonnative English teachers currently teaching at international/foreign schools and the after-school programs at public schools in Korea participated. The data collection was a questionnaire. The questionnaire with 41 items consists of questions regarding personality and attitude, professional ability, teaching skills and background knowledge, the understanding of culture, and the quality of native and non native English teachers. The findings showed that they share the common perception of the qualities regardless of the differences in the school system and the teacher status. However, the results also indicated that there are certain qualities that are more stressed on a certain group of teachers. Implications from the study results will shed light on the qualities of English teachers across Korea regardless of school types. (Bukyong National University)

Codonopsis lanceolata (Deoduk) was grown in East Asia, including Korea, China, Japan, and Russia, and the roots of C. lanceolata have been used as functional foods and traditional medicine to treat symptoms of cough, bronchitis, asthma, tuberculosis, and dyspepsia. The phytochemicals of C. lanceolata have been reported such as phenylpropanoids, polyacetylenes, saponins, and flavonoids that are involved in pharmacological effects such as anti-obesity, anti-inflammation, anti-tumor, antioxidant, and anti-microbial activities. Selecting marker substances of the main producing area by MS-based metabolomics analysis is important to ensure the beneficial effect of C. lanceolata without side-effects because differences in cultivated areas of plants were related not only to the safety of medicinal plants but also to changes in chemical composition and biological efficacy. In our present study, ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with multivariate statistical analysis was applied to recognize the main producing area of C. lanceolata in South Korea. As a result of Principal Component Analysis and loading plot analysis of three groups, Inje (Kangwon-do), Hoengseong (Kangwon-do), and Muju (Jeonlabuk-do), several secondary metabolites of C. lanceolata including tangshenoside I, lancemaside A, and lancemaside G, were suggested as potential marker substances to distinguish the place of main producing area of C. lanceolata.
