마를렌 뒤마(Marlene Dumas)는 1976년부터 네덜란드로 자진 망명하여 작품활동을 해오고 있는 작가이다. 남아프리카공화국에서 백인으로 태어났고 대학시절까지 그곳에서 보냈다. 20여년 동안 뒤마는 당시 남아프리카공화국인 인종차별 정책이었던 아파르트헤이트를 직접 보고 겪게 되었다. 이 사회로부터 벗어나고자 했던 뒤마는 네덜란드로 공부하러 갈 수 있는 기회를 잡게 된다. 이때부터 네덜란드로 이주하여 현재까지 계속해서 소신있는 작업을 해오고 있다. 이주민으로서 거주국에서 바라본 다른 이주민들의 현실을 고국에서 받았던 트라우마를 예술적 근원으로 삼아 작품에 적용시켰다. 본 연구는 뒤마의 작품 속에 드러나는 디아스포라적 이미지와 특성이 무엇이며, 그의 예술이 지닌 의미와 가치에 대해 문제를 제기시켜 본다. 이러한 연구를 위해 오늘날 디아스포라 미술의 의미와 디아스포라의 개념을 알아보고 뒤마의 연계성을 살펴본 후 뒤마 예술을 이러한 디아스포라 관점에서 분석하고자 한다. 연구 범주는 뒤마가 네덜란드로 이주한 1976년 이후부터로 한다. 네덜란드에서 살았던 뒤마가 다른 주제보다 네덜란드 사회 속에서 마주하고 있는 갈등을 작품으로 표현해 낸 것은 보통의 디아스포라 작가와는 다른 점이라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 이방인으로서 바라본 이방인의 현실이기에 더욱더 객관적인 신문과 같은 이미지로 해석되어진다. 네덜란드 사회가 겪고 있는 현실을 적나라하게 보여주며 현대 사회의 충격적인 사건들과 연류된 방식인 정치적인 것이었다. 이러한 점에서 뒤마의 예술은 디아스포라라는 예술의 영역 속에서 큰 의미를 찾을 수 있고, 앞으로 뒤마라는 작가에 대해 다각적인 연구 분석이 활발히 진행될 것이다. Marlene Dumas is an artistic figure who voluntarily exiled herself to Holland and had been working there since 1976. She was born white in the Republic of South Africa(South Africa) and stayed there until her graduation in the university. For about twenty years she could see and experience what apartheid have done to the people in this nation, which was the policy of South Africa. Dumas, wanting to escape from this tragic society, could seize the chance to keep on studying her major in Holland. Since then till now, she has been working on artistic activities with her own principles. She applied every aspect of her traumatic happenings and used it as an artistic resource. This study is trying to see the characteristics of artistic images in the perspective of Diaspora and suggest what they stand for in the society. There are few ways to narrow down how the study is about to be proceeded. The procedure goes as follows: 1. The meaning of Diaspora itself and that of artistic characteristic of Diaspora. 2. The connection between Diaspora and Marlene Dumas, and analysis of artistic characteristic based on the view of Diaspora. The range of the survey is after her immigration to Holland in 1976. The biggest difference from the other Diaspora artists that can be seen from the work of Dumas is that her expression is mainly based on the social problems that could be found in the society of Holland. The reality of a foreigner in the foreigner’s view gives more clearly objective interpretations like newspapers. Showing the bald fact from which the society of Holland was assaulted is mere political method of expression. It shows the significant meanings of artistic works of Dumas in Diaspora, and there will sure be active analysis on Marlene Dumas in the near future.
