Student service learning was introduced to a school curriculum in order for adolescents to develop positive personal and social characteristics. Recently, however, there have been controversies on the fairness and effectiveness of student service learning. To find clues regarding these controversies, this study examined the influence of socioeconomic background (family income and parental educational attainment) on volunteering motivations (no volunteering, a volunteering for university admission, and a volunteering for other reasons) among adolescents and the effect of adolescents’ volunteering experience on their positive community perception, sense of community, and altruistic attitude, drawing on data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2010. Multiple logistic regressions revealed that family income was positively associated with a volunteering for university admission. Parental educational attainment was positively related to adolescents’ volunteering for other reasons. Latent growth curve modeling found no significant differences in a positive community perception and an altruistic attitude between the “no volunteering” group and the “volunteering for university admission” group. However, the “volunteering for university admission” group showed a higher level of a sense of community than the “no volunteering” group. When the “volunteering for university admission” group was compared to the “volunteering for other reasons” group, the “volunteering for other reasons” group showed a higher level of a positive community perception, a sense of community, and an altruistic attitude than the “volunteering for university admission” group.

The purpose of this study is to secure basic information necessary for establishing an indicator system of the marine awareness index and lay a foundation for index development by analyzing major domestic and foreign awareness surveys and related index development cases, and by examining the data which can be utilized for the development of current marine awareness index. By analyzing quantifiable (statistics) data such as the major domestic and international awareness surveys, indicator and index cases, and big data analysis results accumulated through many years of research, etc., and also by periodically understanding the perceptions and attitudes of the Korean people towards marine and fisheries, preliminary results were derived by establishing a preliminary indicator system and preparing a calculation method for drafting the marine awareness index. Through the development of such a continuous marine awareness index, it can be used as an auxiliary data to understand the level of marine and fisheries development and policy effects in Korea.

The purpose of this study is to identify possible gender differences regarding the effects of daily experiences in micro contexts on adolescent socialization. To this end, the study examined the differential effects of family and school factors on the development of participatory qualities (internal political efficacy and expected informal civic participation) between female and male adolescents in a society where gender inequality considerably impacts their everyday life. Korean data from the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study, which was collected from 8th graders in 2009, was analyzed (N = 5,055). Multiple group path analysis revealed that fathers’ educational attainment and interest in social issues had a positive effect on male adolescents’ participatory qualities while they had no effect on female adolescents’ participatory qualities. Mothers’ educational attainment and interest in social issues did not affect participatory qualities in either group. Talking with parents about political or social issues, civic participation at school, openness in classroom discussions, student-teacher relations were positively associated with both dependent variables for males; but, for females, they were a significant predictor of either one. Student influence on decisions about school was the only predictor that had a positive relationship with both outcome variables regardless of adolescents’ gender.
