Biocontrol with Myxococcus sp. KYC 1126 Against Anthracnose in Hot Pepper

Antifungal activity of three Myxococcus spp., KYC 1126, 1136, and 2001, was tested in vitro against three phytopathogenic fungi (Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum acutatum, and Pyricularia grisea). Spore germination and mycelial growth of the three pathogenic fungi were completely inhibited by bioactive substances from a myxobacterium KYC 1126. In addition, the activity of KYC 1126 was fungicidal, but liquid culture filtrate of KYC 1126 did not affect protoplast reversion in C. acutatum. A bioassay of KYC 1126 filtrate against anthracnose in hot pepper was conducted in the greenhouse and field at 2009 and 2010. The incidence of anthracnose in control seedlings was 74%, but was reduced to 29% after KYC 1126 treatment. The control value with KYC 1126 was 60% while that with the fungicide dithianon was 42%. In the greenhouse, disease incidence with KYC 1126 was consistentely 10−35%lower than with fungicide as a positive control. The control value with KYC 1126 was 13.4% and 41.0%,whereas that with the fungicide was 52.3% and 63% in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Although anti-anthracnose activity of KYC 1126 was not maintained for long time in the field, the bacteriolytic myxobacterium KYC 1126could be a prospective biocontrol agent.

During 2002−2008 in Korea, 455 extracts from myxobacteria consisting of 318 cellulolytic and 137 bacteriolytic myxobacteria were isolated, which were then screened for antifungal activity against the phytopathogens Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum acutatum, Penicillium sp., Pyricularia grisea, and Phytophthora capsici. 204isolates had antifungal activity, causing both a clear zone due to blocked spore germination and inhibition of mycelial growth; most (199) were from cellulolytic (Sorangium cellulosum) and only five were from bacteriolytic myxobacteria. B. cinerea, the best controlled among the five tested pathogens, had a unique group of antifungal isolates of myxobacterial extracts compared to the other pathogens’ groups. Among seventy-nine bioactive myxobacteria, four isolates, KYC 3130, KYC 3247, KYC 3248 and KYC 3270, were selected and all were cellulolytic. Liquid culture filtrates of these four myxobacteria were applied to tomato, cherry tomato,strawberry, and kiwi fruits 5 h before inoculation with gray mold conidia; then the treated fruits were placed in an airtight container and the experiment was repeated six to eight times. Incidence (%) of gray mold on fruit of the infected control treatment was 84−98%,whereas it was only 5−21% after the KYC 3270 treatment. After KYC 3270 treatment of the four fruits,mold control was 79−95%, which was highest among the filtrates and statistically the same as treatment with fludioxonil, a registered chemical against gray mold of stored fruits.

The suture material has always played important rolls in surgical operation ever since its inception. The use of nonabsorbable suture has given way to the absorbable suture and again the use of nonabsorbable material is becoming popular. Suture material is mainly used in approximating tissues and keep them in the desired position or in ligating vessels without introduction of infection of irritation in the tissues. Recently we have given another role to the suture material that is cutting kidney parenchyma when the intrarenal mass ligation is performed. This study was undertaken to compare the tissue reaction induced by biologic properties from different kind of suture materials in the dog kidneys, when partial nephrectomy was performed through the technique mentioned above. 12 adult mongrel dogs were divided into 4 groups, each consisting of 3 dogs. 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks after partial resection with intrarenal mass ligations using catgut (0), silk (No.3) and nylon monofilament (No.3), tissue reactions in renal parenchyma were compared histologically and are summarized as follows: 1. Tissue reaction induced from catgut revealed to be those of rather marked foreign body granuloma which is noted in 2 weeks and persisted up to 6 weeks. This foreign body type granuloma delayed early surgical wound healing and seems to be related with its absorption. 2. Tissue reaction induced by silk revealed to be those of mild to moderate foreign body granuloma which is noted in 2 weeks and 4 weeks group. 3. Nylon monofilament suture induced no foreign body granuloma in dog renal parenchyma and showed early minimal soar formation with minimal mononuclear cell infiltration. 4. Among the catgut, silk and nylon as a suture material in partial nephrectomy, nylon caused early fibrosis and the least tissue reaction in dog renal parenchyma.
Rowe cell 시험을 이용한 재성형 점토의 비선형 압밀 특성에 관한 실험적 연구

Terzaghi's consolidation theory has been applied in many ways, and until now is the stock in trade of geotechnical engineering practice. But this is based upon infinitesimal strain and linearity assumptions. Real soils experience change of compressibility and permeability during consolidation. As noted foregoing, the conventional theory of consolidation is lacking in credibility in that does not express nonlinearity of stress-strain and void ratio-permeability. This is especially so where soft soils are involved. In this paper, experimental studies about characteristics of nonlinear consolidation are carried out by Rowe cell consolidation & permeability tests. There are two significant parts of this study. First, comparisons with resulst of oedometer tests show that soil-nonlinearity is main features during consolidation proess. Second, in highly compressible soil the finite strain consolidation theory, which the limitation of small strain has been removed and the changes in soil compressibility and permeability have been taken into account, must be applied. And evaluations of finite strain consolidation parameters g (e) and λ(e) is carried out for void ratio and effective stress.
