        Relationship of Sarcopenia with Microcirculation Measured by Skin Perfusion Pressure in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

        Background: Few studies have examined the relationship of sarcopenia with the microcirculation. The current study investigatedthe relationship of sarcopenia with microcirculatory function, as assessed by skin perfusion pressure (SPP), in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Methods: In total, 102 T2DM patients who underwent SPP measurements and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) were enrolledin this cross-sectional study. SPP was assessed using the laser Doppler technique. Sarcopenia was defined as low height-adjusted appendicular muscle mass (men, <7 kg/m2; women, <5.7 kg/m2) using BIA. We divided the participants into two groups based on SPP(≤50 and >50 mm Hg), and an SPP below 50 mm Hg was considered to reflect impaired microcirculation. Results: Fourteen patients (13.7%) were diagnosed with impaired microcirculatory function of the lower limb based on SPP. Theprevalence of sarcopenia in all subjects was 11.8%, but the percentage of patients with an SPP ≤50 mm Hg who had sarcopenia wasmore than triple that of patients with an SPP >50 mm Hg (28.6% vs. 9.1%, P=0.036). A significant positive correlation was foundbetween SPP and appendicular muscle mass adjusted for height (P=0.041 for right-sided SPP). Multiple logistic regression analysisshowed that patients with sarcopenia had an odds ratio of 4.1 (95% confidence interval, 1.01 to 24.9) for having an SPP ≤50 mm Hgeven after adjustment for confounding factors. Conclusion: These results suggest that sarcopenia may be significantly associated with impaired microcirculation in patients withT2DM. Nonetheless, the small number of patients and wide CI require cautious interpretation of the results.

        Evaluation of Skin Microcirculation by Laser Doppler Flowmeter in Healthy Beagle Dogs

        The cutaneous microcirculation plays a role in various physiological processes and pathological conditions. Two non-invasive methods were used in this study to obtain reference values for cutaneous microcirculation in intact male beagles. Twenty intact male beagles were used. The experimental environments were standardized. Laser Doppler flowmetry was used to measure cutaneous blood flow, and an infrared thermometer was used to measure cutaneous temperature. The blood flow and temperature were measured from the right side of the subjects at 20 cutaneous sites. Based on the laser Doppler flowmetry, the region with the highest blood flow was the periocular region that with the lowest was the forelimb foot pad. In addition, the standard deviation of the chest wall was the highest while that of the periocular region was the lowest. For skin temperature, the inguinal region had the highest mean skin temperature and the forelimb foot pad had the lowest. The correlation coefficient between the two methods was 0.72. Similar to a previous study, the values derived from repeated measurements at the 20 regions are reproducible and can ontribute to research. Compared to the results of a previous study, the temperatures of the two smallest skin regions were the same; however, no specific trend was observed. The correlation coefficient between the two methods was significantly comparable, and this good correlation can reduce their limitations and variables complementarily. In addition to possible use in human studies, accumulated resources on measurements of skin blood flow in the future will potentiate its use in the veterinary medicine field.

        아로마 목·어깨 마사지와 Red LED 조사가 목 피부 미세혈류에 미치는 영향

        이 연구는 아로마 목·어깨 마사지와 Red LED 조사가 목 부위 피부 미세혈류에 미치는 영향을조사했다. 본 연구에서는 20~60세 범위의 여성 30명을 대상으로 무작위로 분배하여 세 개의 실험그룹으로나누었다. A 그룹 (n=10)은 아로마 목·어깨 마사지 후 Red LED 조사를 받았고 B 그룹 (n=10)은 아로마목·어깨 마사지 후 15분 동안 휴식을 취했다. C 그룹 (n=10)은 Red LED 조사만을 받았다. 실험 결과, A 그룹과 B 그룹은 시간 요인에 대한 결과에서 목 부위 피부 미세혈류 시점 간의 주 효과가 유의함을 나타냈다 (F = 29.883, p < 0.001, η² = 0.624). 그룹 요인에 대한 통계 분석 결과 그룹 간의 주효과가 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났으며 (F = 0.202, p = 0.659, η² = 0.011), 또한 그룹과 시간의 상호 작용이 유의했다 (F = 8.452, p = 0.001, η² =0.320). C 그룹은 실험 후 목 부위 피부 미세혈류에 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 없었다 (p > 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.202). 결론적으로, Red LED 처리가 목 피부 미세혈류를 개선하는 데에는 제한적인 효과를 나타내며 A 그룹과 B 그룹의 결과와 대조되며, 특히 A 그룹에서의 아로마목·어깨 마사지와 Red LED 조합 처리의 효과는 유의하지 않았음을 보다 명확하게 보여준다. This study investigates the effects of aroma neck and shoulder massage and Red LED irradiation on cutaneous microcirculation in the neck area. In this study, 30 women aged 20 to 60 were randomly assigned to three experimental groups. Group A (n=10) received Red LED irradiation after aroma neck and shoulder massage, while Group B (n=10) rested for 15 minutes after aroma neck and shoulder massage. Group C (n=10) only received Red LED irradiation. The results showed significant main effects of time between the baseline and post-treatment measurements in Groups A and B (F = 29.883, p < 0.001, η² = 0.624), however, the main effects of the groups were not significant (F = 0.202, p = 0.659, η² = 0.011), but there was a significant interaction between group and time (F = 8.452, p = 0.001, η² = 0.320). There were no significant statistical differences in cutaneous microcirculation in the neck area after treatment in Group C (p > 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.202). In conclusion, Red LED treatment demonstrates limited effects on cutaneous microcirculation in the neck area, differentiating with the results of Groups A and B. Specifically, the combined effect of aroma neck and shoulder massage and Red LED treatment in Group A was not significant.
