In this study, an experiment was conducted to measure the tick repellent efficacy through the synergy effect according to the type and ratio of blending essential oil. The subjects were adults and nymphs of the Haemaphysalis longicornis, and the repellent efficacy was measured using the filter paper bioassay method. Based on the past research, citronella oil, geranium oil, vetiver oil, and neem oil were selected as a single treatment experiment since their repellent efficacy was confirmed. The first experiment revealed that the repellent efficacy of citronella oil and geranium oil were high. Afterwards, in order to investigate the synergy effect on tick repellent efficacy, experimental group was consisted of neem seed oil (carrier oil) that was blended with citronella and geranium oil, at a ratio of 1:1, 2:1, and 17:3 (15%). Also, negative control group was composed of ethanol that was blended with citronella and geranium oil at the same ratio of experimental group. As a result, the blending of citronella and neem seeds showed higher repellent efficacy in all blending ratios than the blending of geranium and neem seeds. In adult ticks, blending ratio of citronella and neem seeds was 1:1 and 17:3, showed the most significant difference of repellent efficacy. In nymph ticks, when the blending ratio of citronella and neem seed was 1:1 and 17:3, the repellent efficacy was the same as that of the positive control commercial repellent. In conclusion, it was confirmed that both nymph and adults ticks showed higher repellent efficacy when blended than single treatment. In this study, the synergy effect of the blending of citronella and neem seeds on the tick repellent effect has a high potential to replace synthetic repellents.

The exposure to house dust mites is closely connected with allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis and asthma. Control of house dust mite populations has been principally achieved by using chemical insecticides. But the risk to human health would be a potential problem. Moreover, house dust mite remain as allergens even after death. Therefore, repelling the house dust mites is more effective method than killing them. The use of plant-derived repellents has been considered as a promising alternative to chemical repellents. Eucalyptus oils are regarded as safe compounds, there have been attempts to commercialize and market the insecticides/repellent products containing Eucalyptus oil as such or based upon them. For that reason, we experimented repellent activity against these mites using laundry detergent with Eucalyptus oil in this experiment. House dust mites (Dermatophagoides farinae and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) were exposed at different concentrations (4, 8, 16, 32 L/mL) in fabric treated laundry detergent with Eucalyptus oil for 24 hours. The repellent effects (%) of laundry detergent with Eucalyptus oil exposed at 4, 8, 16, and 32 L/mL were 48.16%, 74.62%, 52.67%, and 44.47%, respectively. These results suggest that laundry detergent with Eucalyptus oil have potential effect to repel the house dust mites.

Repellent Effect of Camomile and Lavender Essential Oils against House Dust Mite in Bed Fabric

Myun-Goo Kang,지차호 충북대학교 동물의학연구소 2012 Journal of Biomedical and Translational Research Vol.13 No.1

House dust mite (HDM) allergens has been associated with allergic disease such as asthma, allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis. In order to control of house dust mites, various acaricidal agents have been suggested but their remains act as allergens even after death. Therefore, expelling the mite is more effective policy than killing them because of avoidance of allergen. In this experiment, we compared the repellent effect of two essensial oils (Matricaria chamomilla, Lavandula vera) against house dust mites, Dermatophagoids farinae and D. pteronyssinus in bed fabric. The essential oils were applied by direct contact method at various doses (0.1, 0.05, 0.025, 0.0125, 0.00625 μl/cm2) and at a various exposure times (30, 60, 120, 180, 240 min). The result of this experiment suggests two oils have a significant repellent activity. Camomile essential oil in 0.0125 μl/cm2 at 240 minutes caused 93.7% repellent effect and lavender essential oil in 0.05 μl/cm2 at 180 minutes caused 88.9% of repellent effect. The result show that camomile essential oil has more potent repellent activity than lavender essential oil in particular concentration.

Wettability of solid surfaces with liquids is governed by the chemical properties and the microstructure of the surfaces. We report on the preparation of liquid-repellent surfaces using surface-attached monolayers of perfluorinated polymer molecules on porous silica substrates. A covalent attachment of the polymer molecules to the substrate is achieved by generation of the polymer chains through starting a surface-initiated radical-chain polymerization of a fluorinated monomer. To this, self-assembled monolayers of azo initiators are attached to silica substrates, which are used to kick off the polymerization reaction in situ. The growth of the fluorinated polymer films and the characterization of the obtained surfaces by surface plasmon spectroscopy, XPS, and contact angle measurements is described. It is shown that perfluorinated polymer films can be grown with controlled thicknesses on flat and even on porous silica surfaces, essentially without changing the surface roughness. The combination of the low surface energy coating and the surface porosity allows generation of materials which are both water and oil repellent.

      • Elongation and Applicaiton of Repellent Effects of Plant Essential Oils with Vanillin to Aedes aegypti

        June-Sun Yoon,Soon-Il Kim,Jewon Jung,Ki-Bae Hong,Hyung Wook Kwon 한국응용곤충학회 2011 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2011 No.05

Six plant essential oils, vanillin, and their mixtures were tested for repellent activities and olfactory responses in a dengue virus vector mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Among the plant essential oils, cassia oil showed complete protection time (CPT) of 75 minutes. CPTs of lemongrass, lemoneucalyptus, xanthoxylum oils, and vanillin were within 30 minutes at 5% (0.21 mg/cm2) tested level, although their CPTs were not comparable to same concentration of DEET that showed 127.5 minutes of CPT. However, their repellency effects were significantly improved in two conditions; improving concentration up to 15% level (0.63 mg/cm2) and addition of vanillin. In bioassays using binary or tertiary mixtures with one or two essential oils with or without vanillin, the composition of 1:3:1 (v/v/w) consisted of lemongrass oil, xanthoxylum oil and vanillin provided 270 min-CPT. As a practical application, the mixture of 1:1:1 formulation containing lemongrass oil, xanthoxylum oil, and vanillin (v/v/w) was enclosed into the Viscopearl, porous cellulose beads that provide gradual release of volatile compounds. Efficiently, more than 90% of repellency for 2 hours was observed in cage and semi-field chamber tests using the formulation. In addition to behavioral assays, we subsequently examined how mosquitoes sense the blends of oils with vanillin by using electroantennogram (EAG) recording. Binary mixture with one oil and vanillin, which extended CPTs, showed no significant patterns of EAG alternation, while tertiary mixtures of oils and vanillin decreased patterns of EAG responses as an increase of vanillin contents in the mixture, implying further potential roles of vanillin as a synergist in mosquito repellency. Based on behavioral and electrophysiological data, cassia, rosemary, lemongrass, xanthoxylum, and lemoneucalyptus oils could provide the high possibility for development of commercial products for useful management strategies to control mosquitoes.

The damage caused by Hemiptera species is known as one of the important factors affecting the quality and quantity of soybean. In this study, we conducted laboratory and field experiments to investigate the repellent effects of cresol soap at different dilution concentrations, on Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg) and Halyomorpha halys (Stál) adults. In laboratory conditions, the attractive and repellent effects of R. clavatus and H. halys adults were evaluated with crushed soybean leaves and three dilution concentrations (0.2%, 0.4%, and 2%) of cresol soap according to exposure times. The results showed that both Hemiptera species had the highest preference for crushed soybean leaves. Excluding the 2.0% concentration, cresol soap treatment exhibited significant (p < 0.05) repellent effects on R. clavatus and H. halys adults at 0.2% and 0.4% cresol soap concentrations. In field experiments, three aromatics with 0.2% cresol solutions were installed per 330 m² and investigated the damage caused by Hemiptera species during the harvest in this field. The use of 0.2% cresol solutions decreased 15.3% damages in bean pods by hemipteran species from 16.1% (control) to 0.8% (treatment). This study showed that the cresol soaps had the repellent effects on two hemipteran species and could decrease its damages in field conditions. Therefore, it is valuable to do more delicate experiments and field validation with the cresol soap.

      • Repellent Effect of Entomopathogenic Fungi Paecilomyces fumosoroseus on Spodoptera exigua

        Hye ju Jeong,Ji Hee Han,Yoon Ji Kim,Jeong Jun Kim,Sang Yeob Lee 한국응용곤충학회 2016 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2016 No.04

Microbe have been considered as potential control agents for pest, as alternative to chemical control methods. Among entomopathogens, fungi cause the mortality by penetrating the cuticle of pest and/or by metabolites such as toxin. Not only this direct control effect of fungi, but repellency of fungi also may be used to prevent the pest. Repellence effect of fungi is considered as inhibitory factor to control termite. A study was reported in Japan that termite was able to detect and remove the conidia of fungi on their surface. The termite can escape from fungal infection and protect their colony. There is few study that insect pest such as moth can detect and avoid the virulence fungi. Therefore, we has been conducting the detection and avoidance of beet armyworm to high pathogenic fungi, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus. Adult of the beet armyworm avoided oviposition at Chinese cabbage treated with P. fumosoroseus compare to control. This result may be used to prevent the infestation of moth in crop production.

      • Repellent Effect of Entomopathogenic Fungi Isaria fumosoroseus on Different Stages of Spodoptera exigua

        Ji Hee Han,Hye ju Jeong,Jae Yoon Kim,Jeong Jun Kim,Sang Yeob Lee 한국응용곤충학회 2017 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2017 No.10

Entomopathogenic fungi have been used to control pest as alternative to chemical pesticide. To kill the pest entomopathogenicfungi penetrate cuticle of pest, reach the hemocoel and utilize nutrient of host pest. Finally fungi kill the host by consumingthe host nutrient and physically damaging the tissues. But these process of fungi to control pest is needed so much timeand this point is a disadvantage for fungi. Therefore we studied other application method of fungi to control pest. Weconducted behavior test of beet armyworm to Isaria fumosoroseus which is high virulent against beet armyworm. Adultof the beet armyworm avoided oviposition at Chinese cabbage treated with I. fumosoroseus compare to control and otherhigh pathogenic isolate, Metarhizium anisopliae and this repellency of I. fumosoroseus lasted for 5days in greenhouse.Behavior of larvae to I. fumosoroseus also investigated with choice and non-choice test. Third to fifth instar larvae detectedand avoided fungi. Repellent behavior of larvae to fungi was more noticeable in younger larvae. This result may be usedto prevent the infestation of moth in crop production.
