        This paper analyzes the relevancy of goals and contents in the current Korean secondary school geography education and provides suggestions for improvement in the 8th national curriculum, based on the results of two surveys conducted from 2001 to 2002. The number of total respondents was 72, but when the actual analysis was made, 2 inappropriate responses were excluded. The summary of results is as follows. First of all, most of the respondents who are the specialists on geography education pointed out the goals and contents of current Korean geography education should be improved. Second, in regards to the future direction of geography education, 61.4 percent of the total respondents answered that geography education should be applicable and utilizable in real life circumstances. Also, 38.6 percent replied that geography education should play a significant role in establishing the view on the land of our nation and at the same time improving students understanding on the global geography. Third, in regards to the goal of middle school geography education, a majority of respondents replied that the knowledge goal should be the development of place-sensitivity and insight on Korea as well as other regions, and the skill goal should be the development of the inquiry skill and geographic communication skill. Fourth, in regards to the goal of high school geography education in the knowledge arena, a majority of respondents answered that the goal should be the understanding on the deeper concepts and principles of the physical and human geography. In addition, in regards to the skill goal of high school geography education, two categories of answers were most frequently selected: (1) evaluation and utilization of geographic tools and additional skills, (2) utilization of maps in real life. Finally, when asked on how to organize geography education contents, a lot of respondents replied that the organization should be a proper combination of regional geography and human-physical geography.(Korea Institute of Curriculum & Evaluation)
