This paper describes development of low cost precision machine that has a vacuum chuck. This study mainly aims to find out a cutting condition for maintaining optimum surface condition and to examine cutting characteristics of the precision machine that is equipped by diamond bites. The cutting materials is oxygen free copper. Several experiments were carried out to find out the main factors that affect the surface roughness such as principal axis RPM(rotation per minute), feeding speed, and cutting depth. As a result, we obtain The optimum cutting condition of the developed precision machine.

In recent years, a demand for micro-structure machining is increasing by the development of information and optics industries. Micro machining technology is in general well known in the field of lithograghy. However, the requirement of producing micro machine and/or micro mechanism with metal materials will be increased since a variety of workpiece configurations can be easily made. In this paper, ultra precision machine is developed to obtain micro groove and mirror surface using single crystal diamond tool. According to the cutting experiment, no burr was found at the edge of V-grooves, and the surface roughness of copper is about 1~3㎚ Ra. It is verified that ultra precision machine is effective to high precision machining.

In this paper, we discuss the merits of mechanical machining to generate micro features on large surfaces. An overseas technology trend related to the micro machining and dedicated machinery is also presented. We provide an overview of what characteristics the machinery is required to have to generate micro features on large surfaces and what kind of technical barriers need to be overcome to put the technology to practical use.

The needs for precision machining of micro to milli parts have been increased as the industry require high quality products, especially for the micro-machining of IT products. The ultra-precision machining system is essential for the micro machining of fine structures, which insures machining accuracy, low systematic and random error and repeatability. In this study, we developed micro machining system, which is equipped with air bearing stage for ultra precision machining and also we present the results of V-grooving experiments, conducted by the developed system, to verify the performance of system. The results show that the machined V-grooving had good accuracy with repeatable stability.

In recent years, research to machine large-surface micro-features has become important because of the light guide panel of a large-scale liquid crystal display and the bipolar plate of a high-capacity proton exchange membrane fuel cell. In this study, in order to realize the systematic design technology and performance improvements of an ultra-precision machine for machining the large-surface micro-features, a structural characteristic analysis was performed using its virtual prototype. The prototype consisted of gantrytype frame, hydrostatic feed mechanisms, linear motors, brushless DC servo motor, counterbalance mechanism, and so on. The loop stiffness was estimated from the relative displacement between the tool post and C-axis table, which was caused by a cutting force. Especially, the causes of structural stiffness deterioration were identified through the structural deformation analysis of sub-models.

Micro machining is more widely used especially in IT sector. Light guide plate(LGP) and prism sheet of back light unit(BLU) for LCD display are famous applications. As LCD size is more lager, molds of LGP and prism sheet become lager too. There are three type of machining system for micro machining on large surface, grooving machine, 3d micro machine and ultra precision roll lathe. In this paper stae-of-the-art of this three type machines are introduced.

Recently display industries have been dramatically growing with ubiquitous society; therefore, demands of optical components which have micro-pattern have been increased. Molds of optical components having micro-pattern generally are machined using ultra precision machine tool by diamond tool on nonferrous metal in order to get fine surface roughness. In particular, Al alloys of nonferrous metals have a lot of advantages such as light weight, affordable price, getting plates of large surface-area. Machining characteristics of Al 5052 and 7075 were compared according to one and multi pass in this study when machining V100° micro-prism pattern.
