Spline finite strip method incorporating different plate theories for thick piezoelectric composite plates

        G. Akhras,W. C. Li 국제구조공학회 2009 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.5 No.5

In the present analysis, the spline finite strip with higher-order shear deformation is formulated for the static analysis of piezoelectric composite plates. The proposed method incorporates Reddy’s third-order shear deformation theory, Touratier’s “Sine” model, Afaq’s exponential model, Cho’s higher-order zigzag laminate theory, as well as the classic plate theory and the first-order plate theory. Thus, the analysis can be conducted based on any of the above-mentioned theories. The selection of a specific method is done by simply changing a few terms in a 2 by 2 square matrix and the results, obtained according to different plate theories, can be compared to each other. Numerical examples are presented for piezoelectric composite plates subjected to mechanical loading. The results based on different shear deformation theories are compared with the three-dimensional solutions. The behaviours of piezoelectric composite plates with different length-to-thickness ratios, fibre orientations, and boundary conditions are also investigated in these examples.

A two-variable first-order shear deformation theory considering in-plane rotation for bending, buckling and free vibration analyses of isotropic plates

Park, Minwo,Choi, Dong-Ho Elsevier 2018 Applied mathematical modelling Vol.61 No.-

Abstract

This paper presents a two-variable first-order shear deformation theory considering in-plane rotation for bending, buckling and free vibration analyses of isotropic plates. In recent studies, a simple first-order shear deformation theory (S-FSDT) was developed and extended. It has only two variables by separating the deflection into bending and shear parts while the conventional first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) has three variables. However, the S-FSDT provides incorrect predictions for the transverse shear forces on the insides and the twisting moments at the boundaries except simply supported plates since it does not consider in-plane rotation. The present theory also has two variables but considers in-plane rotation such that it is able to correctly predict the responses of plates with any boundary conditions. Analytical solutions are obtained for rectangular plates with two opposite edges that are simply supported, with the other edges having arbitrary boundary conditions. Numerical results of deflections, stress resultants, buckling loads and natural frequencies are presented with the FSDT, the S-FSDT and the present theory. Comparative studies demonstrate the effects of in-plane rotation and the accuracy of the present theory in predicting the bending, buckling and free vibration responses of isotropic plates.

Highlights

A two-variable first-order plate theory considering in-plane rotation is presented.

Analytical solutions for various boundary conditions are obtained in bending, buckling and free vibration analyses.

The in-plane rotation occurs close to the edges, so it should be considered to correctly predict the responses of plates.

Thermal stability of functionally graded sandwich plates using a simple shear deformation theory

Bachir Bouderba,Mohammed Sid Ahmed Houari,Abdelouahed Tounsi,S.R. Mahmoud 국제구조공학회 2016 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.58 No.3

In the present work, a simple first-order shear deformation theory is developed and validated for a variety of numerical examples of the thermal buckling response of functionally graded sandwich plates with various boundary conditions. Contrary to the conventional first-order shear deformation theory, the present first-order shear deformation theory involves only four unknowns and has strong similarities with the classical plate theory in many aspects such as governing equations of motion, and stress resultant expressions. Material properties and thermal expansion coefficient of the sandwich plate faces are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The core layer is still homogeneous and made of an isotropic material. The thermal loads are considered as uniform, linear and non-linear temperature rises within the thickness direction. The results reveal that the volume fraction index, loading type and functionally graded layers thickness have significant influence on the thermal buckling of functionally graded sandwich plates. Moreover, numerical results prove that the present simple first-order shear deformation theory can achieve the same accuracy of the existing conventional first-order shear deformation theory which has more number of unknowns.

A Four-Variable First-Order Shear Deformation Theory Considering the Variation of In-plane Rotation of Functionally Graded Plates

박민우,최동호 한국강구조학회 2018 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.18 No.4

This paper presents a four-variable fi rst-order shear deformation theory considering in-plane rotation of functionally graded plates. In recent studies, a simple fi rst-order shear deformation theory was developed and extended to functionally graded plates. It has only four variables, separating the defl ection into bending and shear parts, while the conventional fi rst-order shear deformation theory has fi ve variables. However, this simple fi rst-order shear deformation theory only provides good predictions for simply supported plates since it does not consider in-plane rotation varying through the thickness of the plates. The present theory also has four variables, but considers the variation of in-plane rotation such that it is able to correctly predict the responses of the plates with any boundary conditions. Analytical solutions are obtained for rectangular plates with various boundary conditions. Comparative studies demonstrate the eff ects of in-plane rotation and the accuracy of the present theory in predicting the responses of functionally graded plates.

Bending of FGM rectangular plates resting on non-uniform elastic foundations in thermal environment using an accurate theory

Bachir Bouderba 국제구조공학회 2018 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.27 No.3

This article presents the bending analysis of FGM rectangular plates resting on non-uniform elastic foundations in thermal environment. Theoretical formulations are based on a recently developed refined shear deformation theory. The displacement field of the present theory is chosen based on nonlinear variations in the in-plane displacements through the thickness of the plate. The present theory satisfies the free transverse shear stress conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factor. Unlike the conventional trigonometric shear deformation theory, the present refined shear deformation theory contains only four unknowns as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The material properties of the functionally graded plates are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness, according to a simple power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. The elastic foundation is modeled as non-uniform foundation. The results of the shear deformation theories are compared together. Numerical examples cover the effects of the gradient index, plate aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio and elastic foundation parameters on the thermo-mechanical behavior of functionally graded plates. Numerical results show that the present theory can archive accuracy comparable to the existing higher order shear deformation theories that contain more number of unknowns.

Thermal stresses and deflections of functionally graded sandwich plates using a new refined hyperbolic shear deformation theory

Ali Bouchafa,Abdelouahed Tounsi,Mohamed Bachir Bouiadjra,Mohammed Sid Ahmed Houari 국제구조공학회 2015 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.18 No.6

A new refined hyperbolic shear deformation theory (RHSDT), which involves only four unknown functions as against five in case of other shear deformation theories, is presented for the thermoelastic bending analysis of functionally graded sandwich plates. Unlike any other theory, the number of unknown functions involved is only four, as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The theory presented is variationally consistent, does not require shear correction factor, and gives rise to transverse shear stress variation such that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically across the thickness satisfying shear stress free surface conditions. The sandwich plate faces are assumed to have isotropic, two-constituent material distribution through the thickness, and the modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio of the faces, and thermal expansion coefficients are assumed to vary according to a power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The core layer is still homogeneous and made of an isotropic ceramic material. Several kinds of sandwich plates are used taking into account the symmetry of the plate and the thickness of each layer. The influences played by the transverse shear deformation, thermal load, plate aspect ratio and volume fraction distribution are studied. Numerical results for deflections and stresses of functionally graded metal-ceramic plates are investigated. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the thermoelastic bending behavior of functionally graded plates.

A trigonometric four variable plate theory for free vibration of rectangular composite plates with patch mass

Kada Draiche,Abdelouahed Tounsi,Y. Khalfi 국제구조공학회 2014 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.17 No.1

The novelty of this paper is the use of trigonometric four variable plate theory for free vibration analysis of laminated rectangular plate supporting a localized patch mass. By dividing the transverse displacement into bending and shear parts, the number of unknowns and governing equations of the present theory is reduced, and hence, makes it simple to use. The Hamilton's Principle, using trigonometric shear deformation theory, is applied to simply support rectangular plates. Numerical examples are presented to show the effects of geometrical parameters such as aspect ratio of the plate, size and location of the patch mass on natural frequencies of laminated composite plates. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the free vibration behavior of laminated rectangular plate supporting a localized patch mass.

      • Vibration of a Circular plate on Pasternak foundation with variable modulus due to moving mass

Mohsen Rezvani Alile,Mohammad Ali Foyouzat,Massood Mofid 국제구조공학회 2022 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.83 No.6

In this paper, the vibration of a moderately thick plate to a moving mass is investigated. Pasternak foundation with a variable subgrade modulus is considered to tackle the shortcomings of Winkler model, and an analytical-numerical solution is proposed based on the eigenfunction expansion method. Parametric studies by using both CPT (Classical Plate Theory) and FSDT (First-Order Shear Deformation Plate Theory) are carried out, and, the differences between them are also highlighted. The obtained results reveal that utilizing FSDT without considering the rotary inertia leads to a smaller deflection in comparison with CPT pertaining to a thin plate, while it demonstrates a greater response for plates of higher thicknesses. Moreover, it is shown that CPT is unable to properly capture the variation of the plate thickness, thereby diminishing the accuracy as the thickness increases. The outcomes also indicate that the presence of a foundation contributes more to the dynamic response of thin plates in comparison to moderately thick plates. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the performance of the moving force approach for a moderately thick plate, in contrast to a thin plate, appears to be acceptable and it even provides a much better estimation in the presence of a foundation.

      • Bending response of functionally graded piezoelectric plates using a two-variable shear deformation theory

Zenkour, Ashraf M.,Hafed, Zahra S. Techno-Press 2020 Advances in aircraft and spacecraft science Vol.7 No.2

This paper proposes a bending analysis for a functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) plate through utilizing a two-variable shear deformation plate theory under simply-supported edge conditions. The number of unknown functions used in this theory is only four. The electric potential distribution is assumed to be a combination of a cosine function along the cartesian coordinate. Applying the analytical solutions of FGP plate by using Navier's approach and the principle of virtual work, the equilibrium equations are derived. The paper also discusses thoroughly the impact of applied electric voltage, plate's aspect ratio, thickness ratio and inhomogeneity parameter. Results are compared with the analytical solution obtained by classical plate theory, first-order-shear deformation theory, higher-order shear deformation plate theories and quasi-three-dimensional sinusoidal shear deformation plate theory.
