Vol.48 No.3

As the importance of animal welfare livestock grows in Korea, various kinds of government support programs for revitalizing ecological livestock industry are in effect. In particular, the promotion of livestock industry using mountainous pasture has been one of them. However, the biggest question is whether mountainous livestock is profitable, which is an important research topic that needs to be analyzed empirically. In this regard, we attempt to measure the value of livestock products produced at mountainous pasture, by estimating willingness to pay (WTP) for attributes of the beef sirloin using choice experiment (CE) method. The analysis result shows that consumers have greater WTP for the product when the grade of beef is higher, produced using mountainous pasture, and when it is from Hanwoo. What’s worth noticing is that WTP for the produced-using-mountainous-pasture attribute is estimated to be even larger than WTP for the grade and Hanwoo attribute. Such results serves as one of the evidences that producing beef at mountainous pasture might be a profitable business model if continuous efforts by both the private sector and the government to secure the economic viability of mountainous livestock are pursued.

Changes in Goat productivity and Economical Efficiency at Feeding Systems by Castrated Growing Korean Native Goat(Capra hircus coreanae)

        Yun, Yeong-Sik,Seong, Hye-Jin,Zhang, Qi-Man,Chung, Sang-Uk,Lee, Ga-Eul,Jang, Se-Young,Lee, Jin-wook,Lee, Sang-Hoon,Moon, Sang-Ho The Korean Society of Grassland and Forage Science 2018 한국초지조사료학회지 Vol.38 No.3

This study was conducted to determine grazing intensity of growing Korean native goats(Capra hircus coreanae) on mountainous pasture. It was carried out to obtain basic information for improvement of mountainous pasture management and establishing feeding system of Korean native goat. A total of 20 goats were grouped by feeding systems [A mountainous pasture grazing group (Concentrated feed of 1.5% body weight, treatment 1, T1, n=10) and a barn feeding group (TMR, treatment 2, T2), n=10] to conduct study from April to September. The average forage productivity of the mountain pasture was $500.9{\pm}61.41kg/ha$. The average dry matter intake in T1 was 0.64 and the calculated grazing intensity was 21 head/ha. In productivity, when the two treatments(T1, T2) were compared, the dry matter intake was about two to three times the difference. The average daily gain per day during the experiment was 63.3 in the mountain pasture and 120 g in barn feeding. When grazing, considering mountainous pasture productivity it is necessary to increase the productivity through proper feeding. The feed costs of black goats raised by grazing on the grassland in the same period showed an average 75% reduction compared to barn feeding. As a result of this study, it can be expected that a considerable reduction of feed costs can be expected in the breeding of Korean native black goat using the mountain pasture.

2018 Journal of Dairy Science and Biotechnology (JMSB) Vol.36 No.4

This study was carried out to investigate the rheological properties and composition of unsaturated fatty acid of farm butter made from the milk of cows grazing at high mountain pasture in Pyronogchang SKY ranch (above sea level, 935 m). From two groups containing 7 cows each, a group was fed in-door with TMR (total mixed ration) feed and whereas the other group was grazed pastures for 12 h. The daily intake of feed on basis of dry matter (DMI), milk yields, concentration of milk constituents, and fatty acid profile of pasture milk were compared with control TMR milk. In addition, the physiochemical properties and composition of unsaturated fatty acids of the butter were also compared with those of the butter made from control TMR milk. Upon comparison, the health-promoting index (HPI) of fatty acids; the ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids (n-6 to n-3 UFA), the atherogenicity index (AI), and the ratio of linoleic acid to α-linolenic acid (LA to ALA) was apparently improved in farm butter than those of control butter. Thus, it could make the dairy farm visitors to consume the farm butter containing the health-promoting fatty acids from the milk of cows grazing on mountain pasture.

Vol.29 No.3

This study measured the economic values of landscape and species diversity in mountainous pasture using a choice experiment. The attributes considered were landscape (forest, pasture, or pasture in forest), species diversity (180, 200, 225, or 250), and levy (five levels from 4,000 to 12,000 won/household). An online survey was administered to residents in 17 metropolitan cities and provinces in Korea. The results of the multinomial logit model showed that pasture in forest, all variables for species diversity, and levy were statistically significant. Age was statistically significant, implying that older people tend to prefer forest areas. The results also indicated that the willingness to pay for changing 1 ha of forest into pasture decreased by 74.3 won/household, while that for changing forest to pasture in forest increased by 1,338.1 won/household. The marginal willingness to pay for changing from species 250 to 225, 200, and 180 was estimated as -782.7, -2,647.1, and -4,492.6 won/household, respectively. The results of this study can provide useful insights for the development of mountainous pasture in Korea.

2017 Journal of Dairy Science and Biotechnology (JMSB) Vol.35 No.3

This study was carried out to investigate the micro-agribusiness realities of dairy farms by surveying both farmers' opinions and consumers' recognition of dairy farm products for in a value-chain analysis. In most cases, dairy farms produced fermented milk for sales and to prepare cheese both for sales and for providing the necessary material for farm visitors. Value-chain analysis did not seem to be a viable strategy for dairy farmers, except when assessing the quality of farmstead milk products in comparisons of dairy farm milks and commercial milk products. Consumers had a wide range of experience with milk products and had no willingness to buy products from dairy farms because of the high cost and the lack of product diversity. Our findings established three strategies for improving the economic feasibility of dairy farms. First, the price should be reduced by adopting a production balance to establish a farm-gate price, i.e., not as quota milk but as surplus milk. Second, consumers should be educated on the prescription of cheese at home. Third, a value-chain based on cooperative partnerships should be established among dairy farms. In addition, to improve the consumers' satisfaction on the diversity and quality of farm dairy products, developments of new value-added milk products made from the milk of cows allowed to graze on mountain pastures are needed.

Vol.23 No.3

This is a study of historic-cultural based analysis for useful application on the sorts of stock-farming resources in the altitude above more than 200m sea level pastures around Mt.Halla mountain area. Recently, ranching in Jeju-island grows weakened and faces a serious crisis, then I dare to propose a new live-cultural process on whole ranching of Jeju-do Island. Ranching is impacted on the light slope and pasture, then the unique historical-pasture culture is built with the various environments on slopes, meadows, small(200~600m) and high hills(more over1400m) around Mt. Halla. And all of them was influenced by the long lasting historical circumstances as Tamra-Ranch[during Monglo[yuan Empire] and Gukmajang-the national ranch of Joseon- Dynasty. Warm weather in the winter and large expansive with slowing grade meadows help the progress of Jeju Island`s cattle raising. This facts above leads the possibility for making various contents on the important culturalhistorical basis, material varieties. These need to develop the new field like stock-farming formality, food applications, making wide-diversities and programs with broadcasting systems, building farm-raising cattle museum and so forth. Above all, the whole contents developing has to go with cowboys and stock-farmers. Surely it leads the poor and decline ranching conditions around Jeju Island to strong and wealthy one. I suggest that conventional knowledge and know-hows should be arranged and kept carefully.
