Vol.61 No.5

The purposes of this study are to investigate the effects of a Physics Conceptual Model Completion Activity and a Physics Conceptual Model Modifying Activity on high-school students'achievement in physics conceptual learning and to analyze if there are any relationships among their achievements based on purposed activities, cognitive levels, and school physics achievements. For the study, one-hundred three high-school students were sampled for three groups: two experimental groups (Model Completion Activity group and Model Modifying Activity group) and one control group. Pre- and post-tests were taken to measure the students' achievement in physics concepts, and a logical thinking ability test was administered after implementation period. In addition, the students'school physics achievements were analyzed. The research findings are as follows: First, the Physics Conceptual Model Completion activity has a higher potential for higher achievement in high-school students' physics conceptual learning than the Physics Conceptual Model Modifying activity or the conventional activity. Second, higher school science achievement is related to higher achievement in physics concepts through the Conceptual Model Completion activity. Lastly, the Conceptual Model Modifying activity is not more effective in conceptual learning than the traditional activity.

Vol.30 No.2

This paper deals with the problem of scheduling jobs and rate-modifying activities on parallel machines. A rate-modifying activity is an activity that changes the production rate of equipment such as maintenance and readjustment. If a job is scheduled after the rate-modifying activity, then the processing time varies depending on the modifying rate of the activity. In this study, we extend the single machine problem to parallel machines problem and propose algorithms is to schedule the rate-modifying activities and jobs to minimize the makespan on parallel machines which is NP-hard. We propose a branch and bound algorithm with three lower bounds to solve medium size problems optimally. Also we develop three heuristics, Modified Longest Processing Time, Modified MULTIFIT and Modified COMBINE algorithms to solve large size problems. The test results show that branch and bound algorithm finds the optimal solution in a reasonable time for medium size problems (up to 15 jobs and 5 machines). For large size problem, Modified COMBINE and Modified MULTIFIT algorithms outperform Modified LPT algorithm in terms of solution quality.

This paper deals with the problem of scheduling jobs and rate-modifying activities on parallel machines, motivated by a problem commonly found in the surface-mount technology of electronic assembly lines. A rate-modifying activity involving repair, maintenance and readjust is an activity that changes the production rate of equipment under consideration. In this paper, the processing time of a job scheduled before the activity is equal in each parallel machines. On the other hand, if the job is scheduled after the rate-modifying activity than the process time depends on the modifying rate of the activity. Our purpose is to schedule the rate-modifying activities and jobs to minimize the makespan on parallel machines which is NP-hard. We propose a branch and bound algorithm to solve medium size problems optimally. Also we develop three heuristics, Modified Longest Processing Time (MLPT), MULTIFIT and COMBINE algorithms to solve large size problems.

      • Does physical activity moderate the association between depressive symptoms and disability in older adults?

Lee, Yunhwan,Park, Kyunghye John Wiley Sons, Ltd. 2008 International journal of geriatric psychiatry Vol.23 No.3

        Objective
Depressive symptoms and disability are closely associated and known to have reciprocal relationships. This study examines whether physical activity moderates the association between depressive symptoms and disability in community-dwelling older adults.
Methods
Baseline and 1-year follow-up data of 645 persons aged 65 years or older from the Suwon Longitudinal Aging Study were analyzed. A 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale, Physical Functioning scale, and physical performance tests were used to assess the individual's depressive symptoms and functional disability. Physical activity was defined as the recommended level of exercise based on its frequency and intensity. Multiple regression analysis with generalized estimating equations was conducted to examine the physical activity's role as an effect modifier in the association between depressive symptoms and disability.
Results
Physical activity was a significant effect modifier in the ‘depressive symptoms–disability’ association, controlling for sociodemographic characteristics and health-related covariates. Moderate-intensity activity was as effective as vigorous activity in moderating the relationship. The moderating effect was notable among those displaying severe depressive symptoms and functional disability. Over time the strength of the association between depressive symptoms and disability tended to diminish for those engaging in physical activity.
Conclusion
The association between depressive symptoms and disability is moderated by physical activity in older persons. The findings suggest that healthcare professionals need to promote moderate amount of physical activity as a potential intervention tool in attenuating the depression–disability connection in later life, especially among those with high levels of physical and mental impairments. Enhancement of the Antifungal Activity of Antimicrobial Drugs by Eugenia uniflora L.

        Karla K.A. Santos,Edinardo F.F. Matias,Saulo R. Tintino,Celestina E.S. Souza,Maria F.B.M. Braga,Glaucia M.M. Guedes,Jose´ G.M. Costa,Irwin R.A. 2013 Journal of medicinal food Vol.16 No.7

Candidiasis is the most frequent infection by opportunistic fungi such as Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, and Candida krusei. Ethanol extract from Eugenia uniflora was assayed, for its antifungal activity, either alone or combined with four selected chemotherapeutic antimicrobial agents, including anphotericin B, mebendazole, nistatin, and metronidazole against these strains. The obtained results indicated that the association of the extract of E. uniflora to metronidazole showed a potential antifungal activity against C. tropicalis. However, no synergistic activity against the other strains was observed, as observed when the extract was associated with the other, not enhancing their antifungal activity.

Vol.30 No.1

We consider the single machine scheduling problem with a rate-modifying activity and time-dependent deterioration after the activity. The class of scheduling problems with rate-modifying activities and the class of scheduling problems with time-dependent processing times have been studied independently. However, the integration of these classes is motivated by human operators of tasks who has fatigue while carrying out the operation of a series of tasks. This situation is also applicable to machines that experience performance degradation over time due to mal-position or mal-alignment of jobs, abrasion of tools, and scraps of operations, etc. In this study, the integration of the two classes of scheduling problems is considered. We present a mathematical model to determine job-sequence and a position of a rate-modifying activity for the integration problem. Since the model is difficult to solve as the size of real problem being very large, we propose genetic algorithms. The performance of the algorithms are compared with optimal solutions with various problems.

Cytotoxic, Trypanocidal, and Antifungal Activities of Eugenia jambolana L.

        Karla K.A. dos Santos,Edinardo F.F. Matias,Saulo R. Tintino,Celestina E.S. Souza,Maria F.B.M. Braga,Gla´ucia M.M. Guedes,Miriam Rolo´n,Celeste Vega,Antonieta Rojas de Arias,Jose´ G.M. Costa,Irwin A. M 2012 Journal of medicinal food Vol.15 No.1

Chagas’ disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, is considered a public health problem. Nowadays, chemotherapy is the only available treatment for this disease, and the drugs currently used, nifurtimox and benzonidazole, present high toxicity levels. Alternatives for replacing these drugs are natural extracts from Eugenia jambolana, a plant used in traditional medicine because of its antimicrobial and biological activities. An ethanol extract from E. jambolana was prepared. To research in vitro anti-epimastigote activity, T. cruzi CL-B5 clone was used. Epimastigotes were inoculated at a concentration of 1 · 105/mL in 200 lL of tryptose-liver infusion. For the cytotoxicity assay J774 macrophages were used. To examine antifungal activity, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, and Candida krusei were used. This is the first record of trypanocide activity for E. jambolana. The effective concentration capable of killing 50% of the parasites was 56.42 lg/mL. The minimum inhibitory concentration was £ 1,024 lg/mL. Metronidazole showed a potentiation of its antifungal effect when combined with the ethanol extract of E. jambolana. Thus our results indicate that E. jambolana could be a source of plantderived natural products with anti-epimastigote and antifungal modifying activity with moderate toxicity.

Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Nociceptive Activities of Native and Modified Hen Egg White Lysozyme

        Wilman Carrillo,Humberto Spindola,Mercedes Ramos,Isidra Recio,Joao Ernesto Carvalho 한국식품영양과학회 2016 Journal of medicinal food Vol.19 No.10

Persistent inflammatory conditions can have severe pathological consequences. Although the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is effective, it has side effects, particularly at the gastrointestinal level. There is then a high interest to identify natural anti-inflammatory compounds with no side effects. The anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive activities of hen egg lysozyme (LZ), both in its native form and modified by heat treatment, chemically or by enzymatic digestion have been tested in this study. The carrageenan-induced model in mice using native LZ or modified LZ has been applied. It was observed that LZ denatured by heat treatment at pH 6.0 presented 39.47% of inhibition of paw edema when administered at 30 mg/kg. LZ denatured with DL-dithiothreitol (DTT) presented a significant result of 42.10% inhibition of paw edema when administered at 30 mg/kg of animal weight. Modified LZ showed anti-inflammatory capacity comparable with the activity of the positive control dexamethasone. A classical model of acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing tests in mice was used to assess anti-nociceptive activity of native LZ and denatured heat treatment LZ and denatured chemical agent LZ. Finally, hydrolyzed native LZ presented 48% of inhibition of abdominal writhing in mice. Modified LZ with heat, chemical, and hydrolysis presented anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive activities independently of their natural enzymatic activity. These novel data point out the potential use of denatured and digested LZ as therapeutic agents and offer alternatives to the use of NSAIDs. LZ can be a natural source of anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive agents.

      • Heuristic to Minimize Makespan for Parallel Machines with Rate-Modifying Activities

In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling jobs and rate-modifying activities on parallel machines in order to minimize the makespan. A rate-modifying activity is an activity that changes the production rate of quipment such as maintenance and readjustment. We develop a heuristic for assign groups of jobs considering influence of the rate-modifying activities. Also an improvement step is incorporated into the heuristic to enhance the quality of its solution. A small example is presented to illustrate the proposed heuristic and the proposed heuristic is compared with the existing heuristic.
