Exploring the potential effect of electroacupuncture on cardiovascular function and lipid profiles in spontaneously hypertensive rats

        Kim, Hye-Yoom,Shin, Sarah,Yoon, Jung-Joo,Ahn, You-Mee,Song, Ji-Hye,Lee, Da-Som,Park Ji-Yeun,Lee, Ho-Sub,Jung, Jeeyoun 한국한의학연구원 2024 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.13 No.2

Background: Investigating the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) treatment on cardiovascular function and aortic lipid profiles in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) constitutes the foundational focus of this study. The overarching goal is to comprehensively elucidate the alterations brought about by EA treatment and to assess its potential as an alternative therapy for hypertension. Methods: Consecutive EA treatments were administered to SHR, and the effects on systolic blood pressure, cardiac function, and hypertension-related neuronal signals were assessed. Aortic lipid profiles in vehicle-treated SHR and EA-treated SHR groups were analyzed using mass spectrometry-based lipid profiling. Additionally, the expression of Cers2 and GNPAT, enzymes involved in the synthesis of specific aortic lipids, was examined. Results: The study demonstrated that consecutive EA treatments restored systolic blood pressure, improved cardiovascular function, and normalized hypertension-related neuronal signals in SHR. Analysis of the aortic lipid profiles revealed distinct differences between the vehicle-treated SHR group and the EA-treated SHR group. Specifically, EA treatment significantly altered the levels of aortic sphingomyelin and phospholipids, including very long-chain fatty acyl-ceramides and ether phosphatidylcholines. These changes in aortic lipid profiles correlated significantly with systolic blood pressure and cardiac function indicators. Furthermore, EA treatment significantly altered the expression of Cers2 and GNPAT. Conclusions: The findings suggest that EA may influence cardiovascular functions and aortic lipid profiles in SHR. Effects of phylloquinone supplementation on lipid profile in women with rheumatoid arthritis

Sousan Kolahi,Bahram Pourghassem Gargari,Mehran Mesgari Abbasi,Mohammad Asghari Jafarabadi,Neda Ghamarzad Shishavan 한국영양학회 2015 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.9 No.2

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with an excess mortality from cardiovascular disease which is likely attributed to an atherogenic lipid profile. Among nutritional factors vitamin K has been recently focused as a pivotal nutrient in improvement of lipid related markers. Thus, this study was designed to determine the effects of vitamin K on lipid profile in this disease. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Fifty eight patients with definitive RA were participated in the present double blind placebo controlled study. They were randomly allocated into two groups to receive vitamin K1 as phylloquinone [10 mg/day] (n = 30) or placebo pills (n = 28), for eight weeks. In order to control the effects of probable confounders dietary intakes, anthropometric measurements including weight and height, clinical status using disease activity score-28 (DAS-28), physical activity and anxiety status were evaluated at baseline. Moreover, serum levels of lipid related markers including total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglyceride (TG) were measured at baseline and at the end of intervention. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding any of the baseline characteristics. After adjusting for some relevant confounders, in comparison between two groups, we observed no significant changes in lipid related markers at the end of intervention. Also, there was no significant difference between before and after intervention values within groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Function of vitamin K1 in lipid profile modification remains still controversial. This study showed that vitamin K1 has no effect on lipid profile in women with rheumatoid arthritis. Further studies with a longer follow-up are required to determine the effects of vitamin K on atherogenic lipid profile.

Effects of Oxidized Tallow on the Rabbit Serum Lipids and Antioxidant Activity of the In-vitro Lipids

Zeb, Alam,Rahman, Waheed Ur Korean Society of ToxicologyKorea Environmental Mu 2012 Toxicological Research Vol.28 No.3

This paper describes the effects of thermally oxidized tallow on the serum lipids profile and radical scavenging activity (RSA) of the lipids extracted from the different tissues of the rabbits. Tallow was thermally oxidized at $130^{\circ}C$ for 9, 18, 27, 36 and 45 h respectively. Thermally oxidized tallow was fed to the local strain of Himalayan rabbits for one week. Results show that oxidation increases the formation of hydroperoxides and decrease the level of radical scavenging activity of the tallow. The rabbit serum lipids profile showed a dose dependent increase in triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol. However, no statistically significant increase was observed in the HDL-cholesterol with an increase of oxidation time. Serum glucose and rabbits body weight decrease significantly (p < 0.05) and was highly correlated with the serum lipids profile. The percent RSA of the lipids extracted from the liver, brain and muscles tissues showed a significant decrease with respect to 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g/body weight as well as oxidation time. Data suggests that thermal oxidation and use of thermally oxidized beef tallow is harmful and therefore an alternative way of cooking should be used.

      • Association of Cytochrome-17 (MspA1) Gene Polymorphism with Risk of Gall Bladder Stones and Cancer in North India

Dwivedi, Shipra,Agrawal, Sarita,Singh, Shraddha,Madeshiya, Amit Kumar,Singh, Devendra,Mahdi, Abbas Ali,Chandra, Abhjeet Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.13

Background: Cholelithiasis is associated in 54%-98% of patients with carcinoma of the gallbladder, and a high incidence among females suggests a role of female hormones in the etiology of the disease. Cytochrome $P450C17{\alpha}$ (CYP-17) is a key enzyme involved in estrogen metabolism and polymorphisms in CYP-17 are associated with altered serum levels of estrogens. Thus, we investigated whether the CYP-17 MspA1 gene polymorphism might impact on risk of gall bladder cancers or gallstones, as well as to determine if this gene polymorphism might be linked with estrogen serum levels and lipid profile among the North Indian gall bladder cancer or gallstone patients. Materials and Methods: CYP-17 gene polymorphisms (MspA1) were genotyped with PCR-RFLP in cancer patients (n=96), stone patients (n=102), cancer + stone patients (n=52) and age/sex matched control subjects (n= 256). Lipid profile was estimated using a commercial kit and serum estrogen was measured using ELISA. Results: The majority of the patients in all groups were females. The lipid profile and estrogen level were significantly higher among the study as compared to control groups. The frequency of mutant allele A2 of CYP17 MspA1 gene polymorphism was higher among cancer (OR=5.13, 95% CI+3.10-8.51, p=0.0001), stone (OR=5.69, 95%CI=3.46-9.37, p=0.0001) and cancer + stone (OR=3.54, 95%CI=1.90-6.60, p=0.0001) when compared with the control group. However there was no significant association between genotypes of CYP17 MspA1 gene polymorphism and circulating serum level of estrogen and lipid profile. Conclusions: A higher frequency of mutant genotype A1A2 as well as mutant allele A2 of CYP-17 gene polymorphism is significantly associated with risk of gallbladder cancer and stones. Elevated levels of estrogen and an altered lipid profile can be used as predictors ofgall bladder stones and cancer in post menopausal females in India.

The Effects of Capsinoids and Fermented Red Pepper Paste Supplementation on Lipid Profile: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

( Mohammad Reza Amini ),( Nastaran Payandeh ),( Fatemeh Sheikhhossein ),( Mohsen Alvani ),( Alireza Talebyan ),( Fatemeh Mohtashaminia ),( Azita Hekmatdoost ) 한국임상영양학회 2022 Clinical Nutrition Research Vol.11 No.4

The present systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in order to investigate the effects of capsinoids and fermented red pepper paste (FRPP) supplementation on lipid profile. Relevant studies were identified by searches of five databases from inception to November 2021 using relevant keywords. All clinical trials investigating the effect of capsinoids and FRPP on total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were included. Out of 1,203 citations, eight trials that enrolled 393 participants were included. Capsinoids and FRPP resulted in a significant reduction in TC (weighted mean differences [WMD], -9.92 mg/dL; 95% confidence interval [CI], -17.92 to -1.92; p = 0.015) but no significant changes in TG (WMD, -19.38 mg/dL; 95% CI, -39.94 to 1.18; p = 0.065), HDL-C (WMD, 0.83 mg/dL; 95% CI, -0.76 to 2.42; p = 0.305) and LDL-C (WMD, -0.59 mg/dL; 95% CI, -4.96 to 3.79; p = 0.793). Greater effects on TC were detected in trials performed on duration lasting less than twelve weeks, mean age of > 40, both sexes, and sample size of > 50. TG was reduced by using FRPP in studies conducted on mean age of > 40. HDL-C increased by using FRPP in studies conducted on duration of < 12 weeks, mean age of > 40, and sample size of ≤ 50. Overall, these data provided evidence that capsinoids and FRPP supplementation has beneficial effects on TC but not TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C.

Vol.36 No.4

This study was to investigate the hypolipidemic effect of powdered mulberry leaves (PML) and water extract of powdered mulberry leaves (WML) on high-fat fed mice. Male C57BL/6 mice were divided into four groups; a normal group (N), a high-fat (HF) group, a high-fat group supplemented with PML (HF-PML) and a high-fat group supplemented with WML (HF-WML). The PML or WML was added to a standard diet based on 1% dried mulberry loaves (1g PML/100g diet and 0.22g WML/100g diet) for 6 weeks. Body weight and organ weights were not different among thle groups in high-fat fed mice, whereas food intake and daily energy intake were significantly (p<0.05) lowered in the HF-PML group. In plasma and liver, the supplementation of PML and WML significantly (p<0.05) lowered cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations compared to the HF group. The HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the HF-PML and HF-WML groups than in the B:.w group. The fecal triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations were significantly (p<0.05) increased in the HF-PML and HF-WML groups compared to the HF group. Hepatic lipid regulating enzyme activities, fatty acid synthase, fatty acid ${\beta}-oxidation$ and carnitine palmitoyl transferase were significantly lower in the HF group than in the N group. However, the activities of these hepatic lipid regulating enzymes activities were significantly (p<0.05) elevated in the HF-PML and HF-WML groups compared to the HF group. Accordingly, these results suggest that PML and WML improve plasma and hepatic lipid levels partly by increasing fecal lipid excretion and enhancing hepatic lipid regulating enzymes activities.

Objectives : To assess the prevalence rate of dyslipidemia and the level of related factors in adolescents groups in Seoul and Yangpyong area. Methods : Design; School based survey during May-Jun 1996 in Seoul and Yangpyong county. Subject; 2,453 boys and girls, aged 13 to 19 years; 1,137 Seoul and 1,316 Yangpyong county. Main Outcome Measures; Prevalence rates of raised serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, decreased HDL-cholesterol, obesity, and levels of energy intake and expenditure Results : Energy intake and fat intake of boys were higher than those of girls and they were higher in Seoul. Energy expenditure per day of boys was bigger than that of gins too. Prevalence rate of obesity was higher in boys of Seoul(15.2%) and girls in Yangpyong county(14.0%). Serum lipid profiles(total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol) were higher among girls and all prevalence rates of dyslipidemia were higher in boys in Seoul and in girls in Yangpyong county. Especially, girls(29.1%) in Yangpyong had raised serum cholesterol level$(\geq170\;mg/dl)$. In contrast, boys in Seoul had higher level of decreased HDL-cholesterol(46.8%) compared to Yangpyong(23.6%). The relationships between serum lipid profiles and relative weights and sex are highly significant. And the relationship between triglycerides and energy intake is significant(p=0.038). But, the associations between serum lipid profiles and energy expenditure had borderline significances Conclusions : Hypercholesterolemia rates in girls were higher. Obesity prevalence rate was highest in boys of Seoul. Relative weight and sex are significantly related to lipid profiles. Therefore, Korea is in need of preventive strategies for different obesity and gender groups.

      • 폐경기 여성에서 1년간 호르몬 대치 요법이 혈청 지질에 미치는 영향

이해혁,남계현,김승형,이임순,이권해,최승도 순천향의학연구소 1997 Journal of Soonchunhyang Medical Science Vol.3 No.2

Cardiovascular disease is one of the most common cause of death in postmenopausal women. After the onset of menopause, the risk of cardiovascular disease is increased. Several risk factors of cardiovascular disease are well known to us. Among the risk factors, the changes of lipid profiles are roles for cardiovascular disease. Estrogen appears to protect the development of cardiovascular disease, by several mechanism. Especially the protective effect is believed to be mediated by the changes of lipid profiles. Decreased high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and increased low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol are important factors for development of cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of hormone replacement therapy on the lipid profiles to include total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein(HDL)-cholesterol, low density lipoprotein(LDL)-cholesterol, and triglycerides. We measured lipid profiles in 31 postmenopausal women and gave each conjugated equine estrogen (CEE, 0.625mg, day 1-30) plus medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA, 5mg, day 1-12) for 12months. The levels of serum TC, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides were decreased significantly (p<0.05) and HDL-cholesterol was increased significantly (p<0.05) after 12months of hormone replacement therapy. These data suggest that hormone replacement therapy appears to protect agianst the development of cardiovascular disease by the changes of lipid profiles.
