본 논문은 주성분분석(Principal Component Analysis)을 이용하여 컨테이너항만들의 경쟁력을 측정하는 방법을 제시하였다. 특히, 주성분분석에 의해서 측정된 경쟁력 순위와 기존에 사용되어 왔던 DEA(Date Envelopment Analysis: 자료포괄분석)모형에 의한 경쟁력순위사이의 상관관계를 측정함으로써 주성분분석이 갖고 있는, 컨테이너항만들의 경쟁력 측정방법으로서의 유효성을 검증하였다. 주성분분석과 DEA분석의 순위에 대한 상관관계분석 결과는, 두 개의 주성분요인인 d1(항만에서 처리한 연간 컨테이너 총 물동량/항만의 갠트리 수)과, d2(항만에서 처리한 연간 컨테이너 총 물동량/선석 수)가 PCA의 DEA기법에 의한 순위상관에 있어서 1%수준(양측검정)에서 유의한 것으로 나타났다. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of PCA(Principal Component Analysis)model for measuring the rankings of world container ports by using the raw data used from the previous research by Moon and Lee(1999). The PCA(multivariate statistical method) is a data reduction technique used for identifying a small set of variables that account for a large portion of the total variance in the original variables. And also, PCA is one of the prominent ranking method in multidimensional analysis. The empirical main result from the measurement of competition power by using PCA rankings and DEA rankings is as follow. Container handling throughput per gantry(total container handling throuhgput/number of gantry), container cargo throughput per berth(total container throughput/number of berth) has shown the significant correlations at the 1% level (two-taled test) between the rankings of PCA and the rankings of DEA. In order to enhance the international competition power, the port authorities should consider the introduction of PCA as one of the measurement ways to identify the rankings among the ports as the alternative way of the DEA method.
