Three synthetic chemicals, benzoyl chloride, 2-propyn-l-ol, and 2-phenoxy ethanol were selected for genotoxicity testing, based on production quantity and available genotoxic data. In our previous report, benzoyl chloride induced chromosomal aberrations in Chinese hamster lung (CHL) fibroblast in vitro with and without metabolic activation, while 2-propyn-l-ol and 2-phenoxy ethanol induced only with metabolic activation. To compare the genotoxicity of chromosome aberration assay, the single cell gel electrophoresis (comet) assay subjected using CHL cells. As a result, statistically significant differences of tail moment values of benzoyl chloride, 2-propyn-1-ol, and 2-phenoxy ethanol were observed compared with control values on almost all concentrations with S9 or without S9 metabolic activation system. This results suggest that genotoxic results of the comet assay and the chromosome aberration assay show correlationship of genotoxicity in the CHL fibroblast. In summary, the positive result of chromosome aberration of benzoyl chloride, 2-propyn-l-ol, and 2-phenoxy ethanol was also induced DNA damages in comet assay with same cell line. Consequently, comet assay will be useful and more accurate tool to detect and to confirm the genotoxicity especially DNA damages in CHL fibroblast.

A rapid and sensitive high performance liquid chromatographic method with UV detection for the analysis of polyamines(putrescine, spermidine, spermine) has been developed. The benzoyl chloride derivatives of putrescine, spermidine and spermine are separated on a mc-Bondapak C18 reverse-phase column with 50% methanol as the mobile phase. This method was applied to the analysis of polyamines in the serum of normal human and uterine cancer patients. The results show that the mean level of polyamines in cancer patients serum is much higher than that in normal human serum.

Phenol compounds in water were simultaneously analyzed by extractive derivatization. Aqueous solution was controlled to pH 13 with sodium hydroxide, and then 500 μL of benzoyl chloride was added to the solution. The solution was shaken for 15 minutes and extracted with diethyl ether and then analyzed using GC/MS-SIM. The calibration curves of phenolic compounds in the range of 0.05 to 5.0 μg/mL showed a good linearity having the correlation coefficient of r2 = 0.9915 and standard deviation of ≤8.5%, respectively. The recoveries by this method ware 58.4-114.0%.
Synthesis of 5-benzoylacenaphthene in the presence of Lewis acidic ionic liquids

Acylation of acenaphthene with benzoyl chloride to 5-benzoylacenaphthene catalyzed by various Lewis acidic ionic liquids (ILs) was investigated. Ionic liquids of different alkyl chain length and metal chloride were synthesized and tested for the reaction to discuss the effects of Lewis acidity of the ionic liquid on the synthesis of 5-benzoylacenaphthene. Pure 5-benzoylacenaphthene was obtained and its structure was identified by GC/MS, FT-IR and 1H NMR spectra. [Emim]Cl/AlCl3 ionic liquid was found to be the most active catalyst in the acylation. The yield of 5-benzoylacenaphthene was up to 87% and the regioselectivity towards 5-benzoylacenaphthene was up to 90%. The experimental resulted show that [Emim]Cl/AlCl3 can be used as both catalyst and solvent, and it is reusable and environmentally friendly for the preparation of 5-benzoylacenaphthene.

An efficient synthesis of 5-chloro-3-[4-(3-diethylaminopropoxy)benzoyl]-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzofuran (8), a potent $\beta$-amyloid aggregation inhibitor, is described. 5-Chloro-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzofuran (3) was obtained by the one-pot synthesis of 4-chlorophenol with $\omega$(methylsulfinyl)-p-methoxyacetophenone (1) under Pummerer reaction conditions, and it was followed by the desulfurization of the resultant 5-chloro-3-methylthio-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzofuran (2e). Acylation of benzofuran 3 with 4-(3-bromopropoxy)benzoyl chloride (6) gave the ketone 7, which was converted into compound 8 by the treatment of diethylamine.

The analysis method of 3-Monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) compound in water was developedusing liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. Aqueous solution was controled in strong basiccondition with sodium hydroxide, and then 25 L of benzoyl chloride was added to the solution for thederivatization of 3-MCPD. The derivative was extracted using pentane and analyzed by the selected ionrange of 1.0 to 100 g/mL with a good linearity (correlation coefficient of r2 = 0.992) and limit of detectionwas below 0.01 g/mL. The recoveries of this analysis method by LC-MS were 92.3-98.0 %.
